DC's Martian Manhunter is more than just a green Superman, and AJ
Lieberman plans on making this fact clear to readers in a brand new
miniseries.

I knew I should've read the thread more thoroughly. For some reason, I thought of Senator Joe Lieberman. The nutty liberal who wants to do something or other to "overly violent" video games.

But that is a GREAT article about J'onzz

Yeah, that's what I thought at first too. Though, as a note, Joe Lieberman is not a liberal. At least not according to his public comments and voting record.

While both are aliens, J’onn has never achieved the same kind of acceptance Superman has. Although Superman experienced some isolation growing up due to his powers, he effectively passed as human. J’onn never had that opportunity.

This is horsepoop. J'onn's a shapeshifter and has many different secret identities all around the globe. His whole secret identity deal is "passing for human". The differences between Supes and J'onn are two-fold. First, Kryptonians look "human" in their natural state while Martians don't. Perhaps that rubs J'onn the wrong way. And secondly, Superman was raised as any other human until his powers began to develop. J'onn came to earth as an adult. It's a lot easier to imprint ideologies on someone at a very young age than it is to "teach an old dog new tricks". Those are the differences.

That said, I'm looking forward to it, and I hope it doesn't much up things too much. And I'm in the minority about the new look as I think it's pretty wicked.

In the Ostrander series, J'onzz decided to phase out all but the John Jones persona.

I like the idea of J'onn being critical of humanity rather than seeing the goodness in them (as Superman does). After all, he wasn't raised by humans like Kal was. Also, I don't think J'onn could fit in mentally just be shape-shifting; it can't be pleasant having to pretend to be something else just to be accepted.

I'm looking forward to this series.

Where can I see the new look, or are we just going by what's there in that interview?

As for him finding out about his origins, I will simply say that it’s more about the Martian Manhunter discovering something from his past he never thought could exist, as well as what he’ll do to protect it and what happens when everything he assumed about this discovery starts to unravel.

Anyone get the feeling from this that they're gonna reveal his wife or daughter came along to Earth with him and that she/they have been hidden away somewhere?

It sounds to me, given the "everything he assumed about this discovery starts to unravel", like the whole thing will be a set-up.

Hmm, Dr Ferdinand, Dr Rooney, Giggs and Figo!
Methinks Mr Lieberman may just be a football fan, perhaps a Man U supporter with a love of Portugal!
Or maybe he was just watching Man U v Inter Milan Or Real Madrid match whilst he was writing and thought hed borrow a few names.
Or perhaps its just coincedence!
Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

There was a sort of bare bones shot in the big 2 page spread at the end of Infinite Crisis #7 and there's a head and shoulder shot out circulating with the press hype.

I don't want to incur the wrath of the mods by driving traffic away from the site, but here's a link to a newsarama article on Lieberman's Martian Manhunter:

Thanks, Ogre.

Oh man. I really hope they aren't going to have him in his natural form for the whole series. A change in costume is one thing, since it is a little silly (I love it), but when he's in his natural form he always looks either ridiculous or like a generic villain.

I'm excited enough to give it a go

I love Manhunter, but don't like the Conehead look. Will give this a go, but am worried already. He adopted the human race as his own and promised to do all he could to protect them. Sure his motives could change over time, it just seems like a drastic departure to me. Hope he just doesn't turn from solid good (green) egg to hater of the human race.

I disagree. I think the conehead look CAN look cool with the right artist drawing it and I'd love to see them give it a shot.

Actually, J'onn's a shapeshifter. I'd love to see him constantly changing shape depending on his mood, as long as he kept some core visual traits.

Giving him a more critical outlook on humanity is certainly acceptable as long as you support it with actual reasons within the story.

I hope this book is good. I don't know that it will be.

Oh man, I totally forgot his first name.

For a minute there, I was thinking Joe Lieberman was writing a Martian Manhunter comic.

"WTF" indeed. :p

That'd be kind of funny. The Martian Manhunter takes on violent video games! :)

And DC cancels it quicker than they did SONIC DISRUPTORS! ;) :p

Did nobody read Lieberman's past work? I'm avoiding this series like the plague, as the Brave New World preview bored me to tears.

You know-

This character has delved into his past enough. It seems that whenever he's made the protagonist in a story, that's the angle, it's all about his past. Which makes some sense, it's a complex backstory. But enough already. Can't he move forward yet?

I haven't read any of Lieberman's stuff as far as I know. And while the preview in BNW was rather dull, I'll still buy the mini. I wasn't expecting much out of the preview at all and honestly I'll buy any solo MM book in the hopes of some day getting another on-going.

His Gotham Knights work was atrocious. Seriously bad, try to google some reviews of his issues, or just ask the Batman board.
