I just bought it last night and got through half of it. It rocks. If you want to see a well crafted story based on a popular Russian novel with great effects and great acting, this is the movie for you.
"This first installment of the trilogy based on the best-selling science fiction novels by Russian writer Sergei Lukyanenko plays upon the tension between light and dark, pitting the superhuman Night Watch patrollers (known as the "Others") against the shadowed forces of the night. But the biggest fear of all stems from the lines of an ancient prophecy, which warns of a renegade Other whose betrayal could bring chaos to the land."

I found mine at a Big Box store, but if you want to rent it, NetFlix has it. Well worth the wait.

It's amazing how this movie differs from the stuff we get from the east side of the world. It's esteticue is incredibly dirty and the script... Wierd and strange as nothing I ever seen. And the Night Watch is just the begginig Day Watch is when thing start to get REALLY out of normal and you cath yourself be'n only capable of thinking "huh?". Overall a experience that should not be missed.

We just watched this last night. Some effects I didn't like, but overall one of the more interesting films I've seen in a while. We watched the subtitled version; the dubbed one was getting on our nerves. The subitles change with the action of the scene, which I think helps lend a comic-book feel, as well.

Not a fan of Night Watch. Maybe Day Watch will play better for me.

Not a fan of Night Watch.

Why? Is it a chick flick? :)

I like it especially because it's not easily mapped out and could even be confusing. I like movies that can knit your eyebrows together in thought, wondering what's going on without it being intentionally convoluted just to be confusing.
There's a good website to help figure out the characters and storyline here (http://www.intothegloom.com).

Many thanks Shonokin, pre-ordered the first two books from Amazon...let's see if they are as thought provoking as the first movie.

I watched it last weekend. The imagry was pretty sweet, story worked out.. and I enjoy more complex movies over straight forward, blow things up (although that can be fun, too).

For me the pacing wasnt all that great. It seemed to be slow in a few places, which made it feel like a much longer movie. Another friend of mine online happened to be watching it that night as well..when I got home he asked me if he was near the end yet..so it seems I'm not the only one who felt it was a tad slow.

I can't say its a favorite, but it was well worth watching.

Just finished watching it. I agree, a tad slow in a few places, but it's also from a completely different culture, written by someone from that culture. I really want to read the books now. Even the director said in the special features that the second movie is easier to understand and he's looking forward to shooting outside of Russia. One of the better non-hollywood movies out there. Pan's Labrynth is at the end of the year, might be interesting to compare the two and also to see how Daywatch turns out.
