The first page is Superman's response to the church's stand on his and Batman's alternate lifestyle. The latter, well things just didn't work out between them.

An honest answer , this looks like the period after batman quit the JLA and formed Batman and the outsiders , he and the league members had a bad falling out. In the World's Finest comic at that time , bats and superman didn't talk , they had their own separate adventures in the comic for close to a year , superman tried to reach out to bats but was shunted.
They only finally patched up their differences in World's finest 300 when the JLA & outsiders teamup.

After the teamup of Outsiders & JLA in World's finest 300 , it was followed by another quiet "tender" moment between superman and batman in a mercenary bar. :D
