View Full Version : Cosmic cube question

I'm a bit puzzled by the use of the csomic cube in recent Captain America storylines...

During the Winter Soldier affair, general Lukin lures the heads of a few big companies with the prospect of auctioning off a cosmic cube.

Now who in his right mind would sell a cosmic cube? Why state that bidding starts at 100 billion dollars, as if that was an impressive amount? Can't the cube create (as Dr. Evil would say) one hundred billion billion billion dollars out of thin air? Even if Lukin was just using the sale as a lure, his guests should have realized that the auction itself made no sense.

I also have a problem with the end of the story, as a distraught Bucky remembers who he is, realizes that he's killed hundreds of innocents, and out of anger crushes the cosmic cube. Anger management issues notwithstanding, couldn't he have first resurrected all his victims? Less dramatic, sure, but more sensical.

Or are there particular limits to the cube's reality-altering powers, such as "no resurrections allowed"?

Cheers,

- Ben

I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that it wasn't a "complete" cosmic cube when Lukin sold it. It needed to be repaired (or charged, I forget which) before it could be used.

No, the cube had been uncharged when the Skull had it (and when Lukin purloined it) but it got recharged a bit later when Philadelphia was bombed. After that, Lukin started using it to influence events and mess with Cap's head.

But yeah, maybe it was still a weak cube that couldn't do much. That should have been made clearer, though, if that's the case.

Well on thing I dont get is that since the Red Skull and Lunkin both used the cube, they are together becuase the cosmic cube is cursed. but Cap and Bucky used and they arnt together like Lunkin and the Red Skull. I only read Winter Soldier and the current Twenty First Blitz.

Just using the cube doesn't combine you with another.

This particular cube has a reputation for being cursed, cause it never quite gives the wisher exactly what he wished for. Hense, it is flawed, as was originally described.

When the skull was shot, he wished to exchange places with Lunkin... but instead, only got part of his wish... he's with Lunkin.

When Cap wished for Bucky to remember who he is, he MEANT, to restore Bucky, but instead, got a remorseful, anquished, torchured Bucky.

When Bucky held it, he was full of rage and grief and remorse, and chrushed it with his robotic arm... saying "All those deaths, just for this thing...." And without thinking it through, crushed it.

It all makes sense to me.

Forr all your questions about the CC go to your comic shop and buy the official Handbook of the marvel universe "C"C" section. Happy to help. You should be able to find it still.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Sure, Captain Marvel crushed one decades ago. With a mighty karate chop, no less.

Everybody else who's ever had a cosmic cube has ended up getting beaten by Captain America, or Captain Marvel, or whoever. Or maybe somebody like Thanos shows up when you're not paying attention and takes it from you.

I could see the appeal of getting the thing out of my hands as quickly as possible, collecting a big payday, and disappearing, letting some other sucker get defeated by a superhero, as they inevitably will be.

Agrich, you are so on the money here.

Going back to the auction, you have to have the money to get the cube. I don't think Lukin's handing it over to the 'highest bidder' so they can wish for the money to buy the thing. Also, if someone were to offer you something that could make your wishes come true, would you consider it? Or would you dwell on why they were willing to part with it? Lukin already has shown that he wants to unload the thing as nothing good can come from it... it's the proverbial monkey's paw... he might get all the wealth he wants from it by everyone else dying. Trapped alone on a planet with all it's wealth, and no one to share it with... or whatever. Better to get all the money you can for it 'honestly' and let some other sucker suffer the curses it bears. Curses they may not be aware of...

Don't forget Cosmic Cubes are not just genie bottles full of wishes.

Their actually creatures.
Shaper of Worlds, Kubik, Molcule Man, Beyonder are all cosmic cubes.
Who knows what kind of whims a immature reality shaping creature has.

Ask Thanos, Adam Warlock, Magus, Goddess (who had 30 cosmic cubes) how easy it is to use cosmic cubes.

So Cosmic Cubes are crushable
Just goes to show you, you can destroy your near infinite power using you near infinite power.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The Cube is like the Monkey Paw. Becareful what you wish for, you just might get it. Only trouble will come if you use the cube.

The worse thing someone can do is use the Cosmic Cube to wish for a Monkey Paw. That guy would be screeeeeeeeeeeeeeewed...

There's never been a "curse" on the Cosmic Cubes as such that I know of.

As for the Cubes being a hot potato, well, look at how people like Thanos, Red Skull, Magus, and Goddess actually use it. Of course they attract attention.

You don't have to use your cosmic cube to conquer the universe; that's bound to cause trouble. Just set up your summer retreat on planet Pluto, create some dancing girls, and wow, you're in business.

Roger Zelazny once said, "Money buys things; power makes things happen. If you ever have a choice, choose the power."

I'll take the power.

After all, what good will your money do you when you grow old and feeble? Buy more viagra? No thanks.

I'll take the cosmic cube. See you on Pluto, where my every fantasy will come true....

Well, what if you just tripped on the carpet or something and just fell on it? Or you leave it on the coffee table and your stupid dog chews on it? What then?

I think the original Baron Zemo used the excuse that his dog ate his Cosmic Cube.
