June 21, 2006 - Monday, DC Comics revealed its September solicitations, which included the highly anticipated Absolute DC: The New Frontier HC. Collecting the complete critically acclaimed JLA origin in one volume for the first time ever, news of the hardcover was a dream come true for fans. Now they have something else to eagerly anticipate.

In an interview with World's Finest, Stan Berkowitz revealed his next project would be an animated version of Darwyn Cooke's Frontier:

"At the moment, I'm writing a direct-to-video animated adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's "New Frontier" epic. It will be feature length, rated PG-13 and Bruce [Timm] will be Executive Producer. So far, it's been nothing but fun... a chance for me to revisit my youth and the Starro era."

Berkowitz has written episodes for Justice League Unlimited and Batman Beyond. Bruce Timm is one half of the duo responsible for Batman: The Animated Series, which is largely responsible for the resurgence of American-made animated television shows.

Set in the 1950s, The New Frontier tells the origins of the Justice League, putting a Cold World twist on DC's famed mythos. You can read IGN's review of DC: The New Frontier for more details on this classic story.

No timeline has been set for The New Frontier DVD, but a late 2007 release seems likely.

I haven't read New Frontier but I'm looking forward to this.

I dont know. New Frontier was pretty close to perfect, so I dont see an animated movie improving on it. Nothing I have seen on the animated Justice League, eventhough very good, even compares to New Frontier. I dont know if I want to see it redone as an animated movie. But i guess only time will tell.

I haven't read New Frontier but I'm looking forward to this.

Incredible news.

Until last year, I was lapsed out of comics since the late 80's. Lately I've been reading as much as I can trying to catch up and I was most impressed with New Frontier. It's a classic, must read type superhero book.

Its got the original Suicide Squad and King Faraday and so many other cool characters. Johnny Cloud forever!

Do your self a favor and read it.

Holy cool!

This is fantastic news! Now people outside the comic book industry can be exposed to the greatest story DC has done in the last 10 years.

The original interview at World's Finest appears to have removed that bit about The New Frontier animated movie.

But my god, that sounds so sweet. And so ironic since Darwyn Cooke was a former storyboard artist on the Bruce Timm series (and he was even credited as a writer of the Task Force X episode of JLU).

I love me the New Frontier.

And just like Watchmen, there's no way on God's Earth you can squeeze that into 90 minutes and get it right.

Let alone get it as a PG-13.

JAWSOME.

I don't care if it sucks. It's still DC supporting one of the greatest works of the decade. It's not like it can make the original bad.

Let alone get it as a PG-13.Really? New Fronteir could easily be a PG 13 or lower animate movie.

There's nothing wrong with New Frontier that would make it higher than a
PG-13. There is no real cursing, and the violence is not very graphic, so PG-13 should fit fine.

But if someone can do it at least half way right and with respect to the readers and the material, it's Bruce Freakin' Timm! :D

Now, before I get too excited about this....and I don't think I've been this excited about a comics adaption ever...are we sure this is gonna happen?

Because, dear lord, this would be the coolest thing ever.

If they spend the right amount of time and.. "MONEY!" on it and it's a crtitcal and box office success I hope the next dream project would be THE DARK NIGHT RETURNS....KINGDOM COME AND EVEN DK2

I always thought such projects would be better off done in animation rather than loive action!

Box office success? It's a direct-to-DVD movie.

It was apparentely confirmed at the World's Finest interview with Stan Berkowitz but the original reference was removed from the interview when the discussion turned to Berkowitz's current projects.

Great news. I haven't read New Frontier (I'm plan to) but I think Cooke is super. Now what's up with The Spirit? It's totally worth the wait but I'd love to have a rough estimate of when it's going to come out.

I always thought such projects would be better off done in animation rather than loive action!I don't know if DKR would be good in that format. If a studio adapts a story into animation, they're going to want to market it more to kids. I consider DKR a story that's more geared towards an adult audience.

But it's not impossible. Marvel's Ultimates book had a lot of elements more suited for an adult audience that were removed or toned down for the Ultimate Avengers animated movie.

I loved New Frontier, and Berkowicz and co. are the perfect people to adapt the series. I'll definitely check this one out.

I think an animated TDKR could do really well with the teenage market. They love something a bit dark! They wouldn't need to tone anything down (except for maybe the topless Nazi woman)

They wouldn't need to tone anything down (except for maybe the topless Nazi woman)You're might be right. I haven't read the story in awhile. Though, who knows with current FCC regulation? Remember the animated series Gargoyles in the '90s? They did an episode about gun violence where one of the main characters accidentally shoots another main character (he was playing with the gun). The creator of the show said you can't do stuff like that any more.

That's so stupid. I can understand not wanting guns glorified on kids' telly, but not allowing a cautionary tale about guns is just ridiculous.

It reminds me of when I heard Teenage Dirtbag on the radio and the lines "Her boyfriend's a dick, he brings a gun to school" had "dick" and "gun" edited out. Did they even listen to the lyrics? The guy was slagging of people who take guns to school and that needed editing out????
