I'm not a hardcore gamer, but with the price of PS2's dropping I thought I'd pick up a system and a few games - of course I'll post later asking which games to buy ;)

Around here I can pick up a PS2 at a big box store for about $130 (Canadian), but there's a couple places where I can get a used one for about $100.

Is it worth saving $30, does the PS2 have a good rep for holding up over time? Or should I just spend the extra couple bucks to get a new one?

My standard (non slimline) PS2 has worked 100% since launch day, however, as a whole, PS2s do not have a good rep for standing the test of time, especially the non-slimline machines (disc read errors are very common).

You would be wise to purchase one of the newer, slimline machines.

I agree.

While mine has had no problems since I bought it about 5 years ago, I do know people who've had their PS2s die on them. You can never be sure of the condition of a used console, and usually your return window is very short if you do experience problems.

With a new system, you get a warranty for a year, and can buy extended warranties if you want to (though I don't really think EW's are worth it in this case).

I bought a used slim model PS2 several months ago, and haven't had major problems since; it froze only once, and I think it had more to do with the game I was playing than with the console itself.

Id never buy a used system just if nothing else you dont know how it was treated before hand or why it was traded in. Could die in a month and your screwed. Saving 30 bucks isnt worth it when you can buy a brand new system.

If it has a dead fan in it, the dvd tray makes noise when it comes out, the controller buttons been used so much they dont work as well, its filthy inside or anyother number of things that could be wrong with it.

Not to mention the new ps2 systems are quieter and smaller, just lacking a hard drive bay but unless your playing that craptastic final fantasy game you wont need it.

Just spend the 30 bucks and get a new one from bestbuy or wherever.

If you're gonna go used, skip the old one and go straight for the slim.
