View Full Version : Overreact, Much?

So I made a comment about how the Comm board should be renamed the "overreacting to non-issues" board and Forefinger dared me to start a thread about it.
Seriously, is it just me or do we all overreact a bit? We all have our hotbutton issues. Mine, for example, is Israel. Oh, and Mister Rogers.
What do you find yourself reacting a bit too harshly too?

Really? You strike me as one of the most level headed posters in any discussion on Israel, especially compared to some people I've seen in those discussions, past and present.
Oh, and Mister Rogers.
Well he's just creepy. :p

Thanks, Typo. I have a phobia about creating threads for some reason.
My overreaction is that I get incredibly pissed when I realize that in the men's restroom here at work, we get rough, sandpaper like toilet paper of a generic brand. In the ladie's room...they have Charmen (?) squeezably soft TP. WHY THE HELL AM I DISCRIMINATED AGAINST? Don't they know that my bunghole preferrs soft TP!

I don't think I overreact to any specific topic really. I'm sure someone would be able to dig up a post or two where I did overreact, but those would have probably been me posting after having a bad day. When not pissed off prior to coming on the board, I think I do a fairly good job at keeping things in perspective.
Typo Lad, I know I'm new here, but I haven't really noticed you overreacting in your Israel posts (usually in topics started by Latuff to promote his comics). I think you're just being over critical of yourself.

I just don't post as much anymore.
Threads are constantly the same, like Latuff's ignorant comicstrip threads, dude pops in w/ some cartoon based on a ridiculus falacy and defends it, thus pissing other people off. The religious threads are the same, believers vs. non-believers and the arguements are always the same. Political threads too. Not to mention that half the time *somehow* threads that have nothing to do with religion and/or politics, become about religion or politics.
I find it truly hard to even find a thread ANYWHERE on this board that I care to post in. Even in the comics discussion boards the threads are almost always the same, I just don't get it.

Eh. When I chime in on other's threads I'm fine. However, when I start my own, it's generally an overreaction to an article I find on another site. It's to the point that I've stopped reading one particular blog.

And various threads about the same subject that can be cover in a single thread?

Truth? I overreact when it's obvious to everyone and their seeing eye dog that the *intent* of the poster is nothing more that an intent to inflame, shit-rake or get a rise out of someone/some group. You know what I mean: Obvious spin-doctoring to incense the target, generalisms, hot-button wording. And, just as obviously, I know that getting an over-reaction from me is the entire point of the shit-rake/troll. I'm getting better on that front, though. Baby steps.
I also tend to react (whether or not "over-" fits may be debateable) when someone fails to see the point, or hopelessly cannot accept that the facts or logic do not bear them out, and thus go into some defensive posture trying to find the angle from which they can salvage SOME sort of personal victory. Unfortunately, I sometimes fall into this little trap of the ego myself, I'll admit it.
Hey, I never said I wasn't a hypocrite. Bite me.

I'm a lot better about most of the things that used to send me into a "FUCK YOU!" rage, but those two I haven't quite let go of.

I have certainly overreacted on the board. It usually happens when someone judges me based on knowing next to nothing about me. I'll never understand how someone can read a post dealing with a non-personal issue and then respond with a personal remark about the poster.
There's probably nothing that pisses me off more than someone judging me based on their limited knowledge. I am normally quite level headed, but I won't stand to have something said about me live forever in cyberspace without a reply.
So, I've overreacted to that kind of thing - but I don't really have a 'hot button' issue. I know where I stand on the really controversial stuff - and if someone posts something that opposes my line of thinking, I may think that they are wrong - but I really can't be bothered responding, as I know that I won't be changing their mind.
I don't like seeing people gang up on others, and I don't like people taking swipes at others on here. From time to time, I'll step in the middle of something just to let the aggressor know that the victim has support on the board.
Sometimes it's frustrating to watch as posts are misinterpreted and things get out of hand. That is the nature of the beat, however, as message boards (as well as email) are a terrible way to communicate as all nuances and subtleties are lost and we are left with the situation in which placing emphasis on a word or part of a sentence is left to the readers and not the poster.

I can't really afford to get too mad these days so I keep myself out of any arguments. It's easy to do, you just don't acknowledge any insults. But this makes a pretty boring message board, it's the conflict that gives these boards much of their punch.
The real problem to me is not that the arguments over small things are screwing up the board it's that the message board is such unnatural form of discourse. It's more like driving than it is like talking to someone. When you are close to some stranger you can't shout paragraphs of insults at them, when you are on the boards it's hard not to.
We talk to each other here but we feel insulated from any real consequence of our typing. So we sometimes get out of control. It's like driving; you really have learn not to road rage. Road rage Driving and flamewar posting are both forms of contact with others where one assumes there can not be any real consequences.
But in the flamewaring and the road raging your emotions get bent way out of shape over small things. It's not healthy for some people.

I don't believe that I have ever seen you go off on the adoption topic.
What is it about that that pisses you off?
Mark B.
Mostly, the denial of the right of adoption to gay couples. I find it unconscionable to deny a child a loving, stable home simply because of the number and type of genitalia present within that home.
Less frequent is someone who disparages adoptive parents and/or children, or shows a complete ignorance as to the realities of adopting/being adopted. It hasn't happened on CBR, but I have seen it on other boards and in real life, and a verbal smackdown from me always follows.

I find message boards to be a much more comfortable way to have a conversation than in real life. There's no way to interrupt, you have plenty of time to think about and edit responses, if you write something that might be offensive or embarrassing, you can see this on preview and just not post it (about half of my posts get deleted at the preview stage), you can ignore a conversation that doesn't interest you by simply not opening that topice.
Sometimes I wish real life were more like a message board. I understand how a conversation here works a whole lot better than the real life kind.

I have one hot button issue, and that's gay rights, but, though I quite often don't succeed, I try my best to be as reasonable as possible as much as possible.

And dead, don't forget that.

What do you find yourself reacting a bit too harshly too?
Besides lack of a decent bagel?
The people who love to tell everyone what's wrong with their government/religion/lifestyle/clothing/entertainment/favorite soda, and then cry like little babies if someone says word one about theirs.

OH, OK!
I was thinking that someone said something pretty ignorant around here about adoption and that would have blown my mind.
Keep up the good fight against the folks who think that it takes a female mom and a male dad to be parents. We both know that isn't the case, but there are plenty of folks who would disagree and ya gotta fight that ignorance every where you can to make a change.

The abortion issue, gay issues, sex offender issues, feminist issues, people who prefer the ingore function (cuz it's silly!...kidding), etc, etc, etc, etc, etc....

Quite a few things. I'll admit it's not that hard to set me off, especially if it's pro-Bush, pro-religion, etc.

There are a number of things that can spur a so-called "overreaction", but they basically boil down to the following things:
1) A poster writes up an opinion, but presents it as fact, particularly without any confirmable data to support their statements.
2) A poster writes a leading statement that is supposed to be opinion, but instead reads as a factual statement which is false or inaccurate. Example: "Isn't Artist A the best TITLE Z artist ever?" Obviously the person is trying to claim that Artist A is their personal favorite, but you don't start a thread like that and not expect others to disagree.
3) A poster is writing about a given subject material in which they do not have enough factual knowledge to properly discuss the subject. This sort of post is typically found in the "hot topic" threads, particularly in relation to social issues, religion and politics.
4) A poster refuses to acknowledge when they have been proven wrong with confirmable factual data by one or more other parties. This is a common enough practice found just about everywhere on the boards, if you care to look.
Everyone in this community is / has been guilty of all four of these transgressions to varying degrees at some point.
Now, as to an individual's "overreaction" to such things, I feel there's too many other factors involved to really say if a post or poster is the actual cause for an "overreaction", or if there's other matters involved (person reacting is drunk / wasted, or had a bad day, or they're defending a friend who they feel was attacked, etc.). Usually it's some combination of these and other factors and none of us are privvy to all of what potentially leads to a person's going off.
Moreover, there have been and will continue to be occassions where members of the community will have demonstrated such ill behavior that an individual's attack was / is warranted, whether the general community understands it or not.
That's a harsh reality of life, unfortunately.

Hmmm...things that get me to overreact eh...
Obviously number one is Brazilian cartoonists.
I also overreact to people who engage in needless semantics and argue tangential issues to the ground.
I hate it when people are intentionally obtuse.
No offense to Bright-Raven, but I have the opposite pet peeve from his, I hate when people are obviously stating their opinion, but because don't use qualifiers are treated as if they MUST mean for that to be interpreted as what they believe the word of God is as opposed to just their opinion.
oh...and anything written by Slam, Dread or Typo...I hate those guys.
