When I have a date lined up I tend to do a little private detective work.
I usually google their name, check myspace etc, things like this.
I found out my date next week used to play the trumpet in a band and wrote an essay on Social reform or something like that.
Is this crazy behaviour.
We live in a world now where we can do this.... but is it right?

I googled a girl I was seeing once as a laugh, but that was mainly because I knew she worked making a couple of websites, so I was mainly looking for them.
I told her and she laughed.
If someone did it early on though to suss me out, I'd be a bit disturbed.
Hell I had a girl google my job description once to try figure out what it was I did (I'd decided not to bog things down early on by going on about it), and that weirded me out.

Actually, I think a lot of people do that.
Now, if you started hiding in the bushes, I'd be worried.

As the token Scottish person here at CBR, I hereby present to you this attachment.
Anyway, it is a bit creepy. My golden rule is that when you're in a relationship with somebody, the only information that should affect your judgement of that person is personal revelation. Anything you find on the internet can be taken out of context and may not be relevant to your relationship.
Plus, she deserves the privacy surely?
EDIT: I forgot the attachment

The internet 's not private, it's public.
Back in the days when we all lived in Villages or neighbourhoods you knew at least something about the people you were dating. Now it's a jump in the dark. I say it's fair to check. To a normal extent.

Checking out what's publicaly available about a potential partner isn't crazy.
Crazy would be breaking into her house to check things out, planting a spy cam in her bedroom and rigging her toilet to try to collect a urine sample for analysis.
So, don't do that. Most potential partners don't appreciate such behavior, and those who do tend to be pretty crazy themselves, and are thus better left alone.

I have heard on the radio that many employers are starting to search for people's names online as part of their selection/screening process for potential employees.

Yet another reason why I am grateful that my parents gave me an extremely common name. In the Twin Cities area alone, there are several hundred guys who share the same first name/last name combo with me.

Some colleges are doing the same in regard to applicants.

"Hey Dwight, my friend is kinda into these two girls he works with. One is tall and brunette, and the other one is short and blond and perky and kinda judgemental. Who do you think he should choose?"
"Does he have access to their medical records?"

Your firewall blocks that !??!?!?!
Its just a blog, she was writing about her job, but not mentioning any names and some "bitch" in her office found her blog and emailed it to everyone in the office, some of whom were described in broad exaggerated strokes. And she was susbsequently fired.
Hers was the first public issue fo somethign liek this happening and now it has entered the lexicon. "Dooced" to be fired for writing things about your workplace on the internet.

Huh. That one opened up.
Thanks.
Sometimes the work network won't open a page, even if it isn't blocked.
This is a good reminder for me as to why I'll always be "Forefinger" when online.

I wouldn't call it crazy, but it could be potentially disturbing to a potential boyfriend or girlfriend you don't know.
I mean, put yourself in her shoes and imagine that you learn she's dug up stuff on you.

This is why I try to keep my real name off the net. Sometimes I think there is too much personal infomation on the web.
Is there a good reason why my name and job telephone number and job title is on the net? Who is the brain that decided that the world needed to see this?
Oh. By the way. When you google your g/f name,Where do you draw the line about finding more info about her?
The worst part of cypersnopping is, I do it too. Yes! I am becoming part of the Big Brother network.:o

But at least it's a democratic invasion of privacy. Instead of a monolithic entity spying on everyone, it's more of a daisy chain, where A spies on B, B, spies on C, and so on until we get to Z-infinity spying on A.

On one hand, yeah, it's a little creepy.
On the other, it'd be useful to know in advance that she owns a website called allmyexboyfriendsaredouchebags.com, don't you think? Sure, they might actually be douchebags, but it still speaks volumes about her, too.

I would have to say yes, people are not always truthful about their background or if they have diseases.Especially in the USA.

You haven't crossed over into creepy territory yet so no biggie. If her info is public knowledge, then check it out. There are a lot of nuts out there. But, if you eventually feel the need to actually sneak into her house one day while she's gone and bug her phones, then I'll be worried. Till then, happy googling.
:D (ya weirdo...heh)
