I have never read Grells Jon Sable, it was never published here.
I have seen the new trades of the classic storys, is those good?

When was this series written?

Jon Sable, Freelance was one of my favorite series of the mid-80s. It dips a bit in quality after Grell passes on the art chores but it stays a good read throughout. It's definitely worth checking out.

I'll second that, although I have to admit that I sort of lost interest after about a dozen issues.

Still the art was exceptional and the way that Grell managed to keep the stories high tech while staying firmly grounded (mostly) in the real world, made for a great comic.

Just another fine example of why it was actually the early 1980's that was really the Golden Age of comics.

I only read a few issues, including the "origin" storyline from the early part of the run.

Sable was a remarkable series, with Grell at the top of his game. Back then, he would have at least one quotable line in each and every issue he wrote.

It was an exciting time!

Byrne on X-Men
Perez on Teen Titans
Miller on Daredevil
Grell on Jon Sable
Sienkiewicz on Moon Knight
Chaykin on American Flagg
Stevens on Rocketeer
Watterson starting Calvin and Hobbes

Some of my favorites!

Jon Sable is an excellent series, one of the best to come out of the 80's independents. I'd definitely recommend checking the trades out.
