So, in my summer boredom I've decided to finally make use of that netflix subscription and catch up on all these shows I hear are great. So far I've watch veronica Mars, lost, the sopranos, deadwood and firefly. but i can't choose what to watch next. I've narrowed it down to:

Alias
Oz
the Wire
the Shield

so, which one should I go for?

The Sheild

Oh yes, definitely the Shield, although you could get 5 seasons of West Wing as well.

Experience tells me The Shield is going to be the clear winner in this poll, though personally I think I'd go with Alias. At least the first two seasons. It kind of falls apart after that.

ALL of these people are WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!

THE WIRE is totally the way to go.

Honestly they are all good choices but The Wire is the best one!

That's why I said "The Sheild" rather than Alias. Sheild has been consistantly great through all the seasons, and could lead up to viewing when the new season starts. Alias was great for 2 seasons like you said, but it falls apart and the rest of it is a dissapointment. I wouldn't bother with it. By the time I watched the final episode I was telling my wife "this is so stupid, I'm glad this series is ending."

I'll also throw two other great series from the FX network in there for DVD viewing; Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me. I think that both are great, but I take it a step further with Rescue Me and say it's the best show on television.

The shield or Alias.

If you get a chance, check out NIP/Tuck.

I tried to watch it after the high praise I'd seen for it here and other places online. I just didn't enjoy it enough to get the second DVD of the first season. It was just too boring.

Oz is brilliant!

I tried the Wire during its first season, and was bored senseless.

Alias just never captured my imagination, and I've not seen [the Shield[/B], because I don't have payTV, and I was busy going through Six Feet Under and Oz!

I would say forget all four of those and go for seasons 1 and 2 of Rescue Me.

If you can deal with all the man-rape, Oz is probably the best. Otherwise, go with the Shield.

Oz is an excellent show.

I passed "Verne Schillinger" AKA JK Simmons, in Pavilions in WeHo, earlier this evening! That's the coolest celeb sighting I've had... since sitting next to Bryan Singer's table @ Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, 2 or 3 sundays ago.

I dunno about Nip/Tuck. I've been watchign it on repeats on FX and it seems like as the series goes on, the characters get less likable.

I doubt you'd be disappointed in any of those shows, but I'd have to go with The Shield, followed by Alias. I'm on the 2nd season set of the Shield right now (I've seen the more recent stuff too, but...), and I can guarantee quality for every season.

The Wire, it's the best show of the ones you listed.

If it had ended after the third season I'd agree. But I don't even bother with the show anymore.

Harsh, but funny!

Seconded! With extreme prejudice!

Ontir is the wrongest of the wrong.Well, at least I'm not the wrongest of the wrong; I couldn't live with that stigma.

I saw a couple of episode of The Wire at a screenwriting class in school. It was definitely okay.

Oz started out gangbusters and then got really horrid.

Season 3 was pretty bad, but it re-grouped largely, as the show went on. The problem that I never got over/around, was that in season 1, when an inmate was killed, the Feds were all over the prison, along with the Governor and the media. In season 2, Beecher kills a Nazi guard. The guy definitely deserved at least that, but he was murdered in the prison, and there was barely a mention of having found the body! I just couldn't buy it!

There was also the Riot. The build-up to the first riot was momentous, and we are told that it IS out of the ordinary, even in a place like Oz. After that, it was like, "Riot equals ratings, so let's throw another."

Still, it had better writing, acting, and directing than most TV shows, and it was ballsy as hell!

the Wire: STILL the MOST BORING show on TV! Well, aside from crafting shows!
