Runaways???

Ok. I admit it. I a long time Marvel Zombie (re:fanboy) and have been away for a few years.

Who are the Runaways?

What's their deal? What are they "running away" from?

I appreciate intelligent responses and I apologize for not knowing about them....but I need to know this info. as I'm pretty stoked about the Civil War.

Runaways is an ongoing comic book series, created and written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Adrian Alphona (except a few issues illustrated by Takeshi Miyazawa), and published monthly by Marvel Comics. The series is about six teenagers who run away from home and try to become superheroes after they discover their parents are secretly a group of super-villains called The Pride.

As for who they are as individuals;

Current Members

1. Nico Minoru - Current leader of the group. Carries the mystic "Staff of One," which allows her to cast spells, though never the same one twice. Went by the codename "Sister Grimm" during the first series run.
2. Chase Stein - Pilots, though with some inexpertise, the "Leapfrog," their ship. Originally possessed gauntlets known as "Fistigons" that can make fire in any form that Chase desires, although the Fistigons were destroyed by Nico Minoru when Alex Wilder used them against the Runaways. Was given the codename "Talkback."
3. Karolina Dean - Her alien heritage gives her ability to fly and manipulate solar energy. She chose the codename "Lucy in the Sky," but parted company with the group in order to return to her home planet of Majesdane in hopes of stopping a war between it and the Skrulls. She has recently returned after a mysterious "explosion".
4. Molly Hayes - A mutant with super-strength which may be psionic in nature, she grows sleepy after exerting herself or using her invulnerability. Was given the codename "Bruiser", although she'd rather be called Princess Powerful.
5. Victor Mancha - The cyborg son of the robotic Avengers foe Ultron and Marianella Mancha, an infertile woman who worked as a drug mule. He has electromagnetic abilities.
6. Gertrude Yorkes - Possesses a genetically engineered deinonychus (whom she dubbed "Old Lace") under her telepathic control. Went by the codename "Arsenic."

Former members

* Alex Wilder - The former de facto leader of the group. Had no super-human abilities and refused to adopt a codename, insisting that he wanted to redeem the family name his parents had ruined. It turned out that he was in fact a mole, secretly passing information to The Pride. He learned of The Pride before the rest of the Runaways, and felt compelled to help his parents when he learned of a plot by the Hayes and Deans to overthrow the rest of The Pride.
* Topher - A teenager who joined the team after they foiled a convenience store robbery that was supposedly perpetrated by his evil, super-powered parents. The charming young man quickly seduced Nico and caused tension among the Runaways. Topher was revealed to be a vampire, and his "parents" were actually lesser vampires sired by him. Topher planned to turn Nico into a vampire and kill the other Runaways, but he spontaneously combusted after he drank Karolina's solar-powered blood.


They're basically a group of snarky teenagers just trying to find out where they fit in the world. They don't really trust anyone , including other heroes, but at the same time they have a desire to fight crime and make up for the crimes of their parents.

The Runaways are a bunch of kids who found out that their parents were actually a cabal of supervillains. It's written by Brian Vaughan and drawn by Adrian Alphona (and a few others).

It's a fun comic. The first series (eighteen issues, available as three digests or one hardcover) mostly dealt with the kids initial flight from their parents and the resolution of that conflict. The current series deals with the aftermath of that resolution and some membership shake-ups.

The current line-up is Nico Minoru (magic user, leader), Molly Hayes (super-strong mutant), Chase Stein (drives the hi-tech getaway car), Victor Mancha (cyborg with electrical powers), Gert Yorkes (has a pet dinosaur), and Karolina Dean (flying alien with light powers). One of them will be dying soon, but we don't know which one.

I really recommend at least the first digest. It's one of the most original debuts in recent Marvel history.
