Some devious booker has set George Carlin and Ann Coulter up as the two guests on this evening's show! This might just be the best ep of Leno since Robin Quivers was ready to throw down with Linda Rondstadt! :evilsmile

Carlin, while quite funny, sat mainly silent during Coulter's daft segment. I'm surprised that someone who relies on such staggering generalisms, and by her own admission, has talked to few of the people she so lionizes, has managed to become a signifigant voice in whatever passes for conservatism/republicansim these days.
There are, actual, honest-to-GOD, Born-Again-Christians, who are democrats/liberals, just as there are die-hard, atheist republican/conservatives, but that won't ever find mention in her simpleton's pontifications. She said several times, that "I called them 'Godless,' and that they don't mind..." It's not that it isn't minded Ann, it's that for those of us who can't choke your line down, and actually do have religious beliefs, we know it's not true, and when you make more sweeping generalized statements about people who've already been greatly victimized, we tend to take offense for them, and move in defense of them. It's generally considered a natural human response, but she wouldn't understand that.

I watched the show because of seeing this thread five minutes before showtime. But it was clear from Jay's opening monologue that there were a lot of conservatives in the audience. Leno even commented on it as they applauded and cheered one of his remarks (such as "illegal immigration has gone down 20% this week") and he stopped and was like, "Hey, let me get to the joke," like they were spoiling his timing (the punchline was, "Everyone who used to live in Mexico is in this country now"). I assume that Leno and Carlin were easy on Ann because of all the cheers she was getting from the audience.

I wouldnt chalk that up to a conservative audience though. I think they took Carlin aside and told him in no uncertain words not to start shit with her on the show. Why, I cant possibly fathom, as it would be great television, but then this is all going on the idea that Jay Leno knows what good TV is.

The few times they showed Carlin during that segment, he looked like he really wanted to say something but he was holding back. Even though it's George Carlin, he knows how business works too and he was probably very aware that he was there promoting a kids movie, so he couldn't offend the parents...none of his remakrs were particularly edgy. It also felt very uneasy when Coulter was trying make jokes and Leno was trying to be serisous...Leno was much more successful at this role change, I thought.
One other note about Carlin...was it just me, or during his stand up bit did it seem like he was reading cue cards or a teleprompter. He kept looking in the same three or four places and his delivery seemed a little more forced than it has in the past. Just an observation.

Carlin seemed mesmerised by her breasts.
It was nice that she at least acknowledged his intellect, that's far above what I'd thought possible from her.

IIRC, Coulter is actually friends with Bill Maher, so it's entirely possible that she and Carlin got along fine backstage, or have met before.
Though it would be nice to see *somebody* rip her apart publically for the remarks she made about some 9/11 widows. I know Tucker Carlson bashed her for it, but I don't think he actually went after her live.

FYI, liberals were bashing the 9/11 widows loooooooong before Ann Coulter ever did.
I wish I had the link, but I saw a Ted Rall cartoon from Feb. 2002 a few days ago that lambasted them pretty bad.
But of course, no one's talking about that particular tidbit...
(Though I think Coulter's comments have, sadly, gone pretty far overboard...)
