Just.... Wow....

Yeah....that's just it-more "wow" factor for Marvel. Logically, this makes NO sense....Spider-man is the one character with the most to lose by doing this. Meh.

For those of you who havn't got Cival War 2 yet...it has only been out for a few hours, DO NOT go to Yahoo.com They have a huge spoiler right on the damn page under the entertainment section. No warning or anything...it got me and now I'm pissed. So a warning, stay away from Yahoo until you read the book.

I wrote them a nasty email telling them to take it down or put a warning up for the sake of the real true fans out there, we will see if I get a response.

Goddamnit, Yahoo! happens to be my default homepage, and the f***ers spoiled it for me. I'm changing my homepage to Google....

Digg.com - the popular tech site - spoiled it. People bumped the story to the front page and bam!

Ya, and this doesn't make any sense. Just a move to sell comics.

I havn't heard back from them, but you might be happy to know it is no longer on Yahoo's homepage...It's not anywhere on the site that I have seen. So feel free to yahoo all you want...although might I suggest google...they don't spoil things for you, screw yahoo.

No, I havn't and I really don't expect one. I guess there were alot of sites/magazines/papers that spoiled it that I hadn't even seen. Last I remember a comic book getting this much buzz was the death of Superman.

If you guys want to hear a funny story, it got a mention on a Mexican Radio station here in Mexico City. From a comentator who is known for his political insight and for not giving time to entertainment news.

Since Civil War wasn't stated to come out in spanish until I believe October or so (We're starting Avengers Dissambled right now), I guess no one can say that they don't believe it happened

CIVIL WAR #2 SPOILERS BELOW!

It all started around 8:30am PST when I logged into my computer at work and saw that the comicsphere of the internet was buzzing like crazy: Something massive had happened in Civil War #2. I was excited. I couldn't wait to read this "huge" event for myself, so all day I avoided any and all Civil War-related threads at places like CBR, The Bendis Board, and Newsarama. After Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace I have tried to avoid spoilers in general. I knew what was going to happen the entire time and wasn't surprised by anything. I knew the entire story flow, scene-by-scene, so I was just watching it unfold thinking, "Okay here's when "X" should happen" It's no way to take in a new film or book or whatever creative medium you are into.

Yahoo is getting dissed because around 5:50pm yesterday evening, right as I was about to leave my office and pick up my comics I decided to check my email one last time. When I clicked on the Explorer icon and Yahoo (my homepage) popped up, this is what I saw:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i284/scebass/Yahoo.jpg

And just like that, the goddamn douchebags spoiled it for anyone who opened up Yahoo.com, a site that gets literally millions and millions of hits a day. No warning, no nothing, just bang: Spider-Man Unmasks as their main news headline.

Why is it okay for them to do this? Imagine what would have happened if a major media outlet like Yahoo decided to run a story back on March 28, 2000, opening night for The Sixth Sense that read, Sixth Sense Shocker: Willis Character a Ghost! Why didn't they spoil this? I'll tell you: Because the media respects movie goers and they don't respect comic book readers. Comic Books are sadly still perceived as "kid's stuff" so they don't command the same respect that a major Hollywood release does. It's a perception problem that has dogged us for years. Although books like Ex Machina, The Walking Dead, and 100 Bullets (to name just three of many) are helping to change that perception to actual industry observors at mainstream publications (like Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly and Christopher Bahn at Newsweek) to the majority of the mainstream media the "kid's stuff" stereotype remains sadly intact. I know there's a counter-arguement that says, "Well, this kind of reporting gets more mainstream people interested in comics", but I'm not buyin'. What will happen is that same thing that happened when DC whacked Superman; a bunch of non-comic readers will read about the story in the newspaper, see dollar signs, rush out and buy five copies, then never touch a comic book again. While I was bitching to the dude at my LCS about the Civil War reveal being ruined for me, he said that since the story got blowm his store has been packed all day with new faces. People he'd never seen before coming in and buying four and five copies of Civil War #2. I'm happy that he's moving more copies because it's good for his business, and I'm happy comics in general are getting all of this mainstream exposure, what pisses me off is how they are getting that exposure: At the expense of the fans.

What's sad is that hard feelings like mine could have been avoided had the editors at Yahoo simply done the right thing and just waited until today to run the story. That at least gives avid comic book fans like myself a chance to wholly experience such a great comics moment. Instead, I laid in bed, flipped through Civil War #2, and when I saw Spidey appear I already knew what was coming, and as a result the impact of that moment was completely lost on me.

Thanks, Yahoo.

...could have been avoided had the editors at Yahoo simply done the right thing and just waited until today to run the story.

Actually, that wouldn't help either since many readers have the book for later reading, or readers still waiting for their copies. The editors at Yahoo! should have simply worded the newsblurb with better tact, such as "A SUPERHERO CIVIL WAR IN THE COMIC INDUSTRY INTENSIFIES!". They should also remove the pic as well.

I'm still upset about it happening to me, I haven't had the motivation to read my copy yet...

Missing the point here guys.

Major news outlets think this is news! That's awsome in my opinion. You really don't lose the shock when you here it on the news rather then in the book. Sure it makes the 2.99 a little less worth it...but still. the New York Post ran a story about Spider Man. Last time I remember a major comic thing in the news was the 'Death' of Superman. That was a pretty long time ago.

i hope that millar follows up on what he did with spider-man during his run on the mk title.
i wasn't necessarily expecting this to happen, but i'll give millar the benefit of the doubt and see where he goes with it.

They revealed in Wizard MONTHS ago that this was going to happen..they gave four heroes who would reveal their identity to the world...
I believe that it was Daredevil, Iron Man, Spider-man and SpiderWoman...common sense tells you that only Spider-man would have an impact on comics!!

I actually posted that months ago...

Just out of interest, today's (Saturday) issue of the Melbourne Herald Sun (yes, that's an aussie newspaper) had a small article on Civil War, focusing on Spider-Man unmasking himself at that press conference.

An online version of the story can be seen here: http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,19494363%255E2902,00.html

It was also in The New York Post, discussed on Howard Stern and was quite a popular story on Yahoo.

And incidentely, the press conference was in Washington DC. Not New York City (as the major news sites are reporting).

And it was in the Metro (free newspaper) on Thursday.

It's such a major thing.
They even went into a little detail about the SRA. It was on 3rd page I believe, and the same thing happened when Spider-Man's costume changed.

It also showed in Times Of India in the International Section. Pretty big achievement. Only, it was spelled as 'Spiderman' rather than Spider-Man (Really nitpicky complaint, I know, but hey all fans do that right?).

The last time comic books made such news in our paper was the launch of Virgin Comics, and Spider-Man India.
