In the B&W Showcase trades, there will occasionally be a half-page of art with the remainder of the page filled with a giant logo. Were these spaces originally taken up by ads? And I thought the 80's "story continued on 3rd page following" era of advertising was bad. Can anyone post a scan of what these pages looked like with ads in place? I would be interested to see what kind of stuff they were trying to sell to the kids back in the day.

Mostly they were house ads for upcoming comics. In those days it was the only way a reader knew about comics like Metamorpho or Brave & Bold or Jimmy Olsen or an 80-Page Giant Batman. Personally, I loved the house ads.

Yup - those were ads.

I'm at work so don't have anything handy.

I believe that many of them were DC house ads, others for model cars.

There were also long running features such as Super Turtle and Cap's Hobby Hints - but I don't know if those were on story pages, or on full ad pages.

I remember those being on either/or... but it's been a while since I was looking at actual comics from that era (or my now-ancient copy of Batman: From the 30s to the 70s, which included the house ads, but not any paid advertising).

Dial B for Blog has a good sampling of DC house ads here:

Thanks for the link, Mike.

I initially assumed they were all paid ads. I think it would be cool if they left the house ads in place for the Showcase volumes. They would only serve to up the ginchy factor!

I have a feeling there were some 1/3 page ad for model cars.

What was the company? Not Aurora, but AMT or something like that.

Weren't those Munsters model car ads 1/3 page ads?

Here's the ad. Don't know which comic, if any, it was clipped from.

As I recall, those 1/3 page bottom of the page spots were almost all house ads--usually two cover shots with some sort of blurb in between. I, too, wish they would leave the old ads in the reprints.

I really liked the car add with the long-necked cat.
