So I'm gonna assume this is ok with the Mods that be but if not then of course feel free to delete this thread...

Can folks post their info as to where they will be and when?? This way we can plan a get together for SDCC...!!

Please state when you are arriving/leaving and how you are arriving/leaving...whether or not you have a vehicle...where you are staying...and how many are in your party...

Also suggest which would be the best day for you to get together with other CBR Hellboy folk!!

Ta2grrl:

July 20th to the 24th...arriving Thursday night by car...leaving Monday morning by car...

Camp KOA San Diego...now referred to as Camp Chuthulu...

We have a car as we are driving down from Canada...

There are 4 total in the party including myself...

We will be attending the Con on Friday and one other day...most likely Saturday...

So Friday would be great for me to meet up wth folks at any time...I know Tad will be attending the Hellboy Animated panel Friday at 10:30 am...perhaps this would be a good meetup place??

Who else is in??

Erin

Cheers for the sticky jnapper!!

Guys you don't have to post as much info as I did but it would be nice to confirm who is going...

Maybe just put what day you would like to meet-up if the idea of putting any other info on the net spooks you ;)

Cheers,

Erin

Bandit 37:

July 18th - July 23rd...arriving Tuesday morning by car...leaving Sunday afternoon

Marine Base (MCRD) San Diego

We are driving down from Lompoc CA

There are 5 total in the party including myself, and my new wife (who thinks its ok for me to talk on the forum as long as I don't give you my credit card number)

We will be going to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and we will be attending SDCC on Wednsday (Preview Night) - Sunday

I know I will be attending the HB Animated panel, and I think it would be cool to meet some of the talented people on this forum.

I thknk our group is gonna hit the San Diego Zoo on the day we don't attend the Con...

I was out-voted by the non-comic book fans who are coming...

Friday my time is not my own. Doesn't mean I won't be able to make it to a meet up but I can't promise since I don't know the schedule. There may be video cameras around asking fans why they like Hellboy... try to be coherent.:D

I know that meet ups have been disappointing when there wasn't an activity (like food). There was the thought of meeting outside the con at a restaurant or Seaport Village where people can get a variety of foods. But I know leaving the con is not necessarily an option when you're only there for a day or when you have to zealously guard your mouse books or do a million sketches for fans.

Just ideas.

I agree with you Tad that an offsite meeting would probably be best. Meeting during the convention itself is usually kind of rushed and uncomfortable, as we're all most likely just stopping on our way to somewhere else and usually in a hurry at that. Also, we run the risk of missing various panels and other planned activities (which happened last year). The evening after the show is probably going to be when I'll feel most relaxed and ready to chat it up with fellow fans.

Also, doing a meet up earlier in the week (like Thursday) will mean that most people won't be in exhaustion mode, totally wiped out from days of standing in lines and trying to get to and fro.

I don't know the area well enough to suggest an actual time and place yet, but I'd say any decent restaurant in the Gaslamp after the show on Thursday or Friday would be my best suggestion. That should be central enough for most fans to get to without interrupting other plans- hopefully that is.

Why not do two meet-ups?

One off-site evening meet-up at a restaurant and then, once the schedule comes out, set up a time to meet at the DarkHorse booth as we did last year.

There will be people who can't stay in the evening because of commitments with travelling companions or having a budget or dietary needs/tastes that the chosen restaurant doesn't fit, etc. Also, it's a big social commitment to meet up with a bunch of people who might be still mostly strangers to you and be tied into spending the evening/splitting the cheque with them. I expect some folks would just like to put faces to names first.

The meet-up at the Dark Horse booth went well last time, I thought, in that quite a lot of people showed up. And then quite a few had to leave right away too, but at least we got to say "hi" and could recognize one another when we met again later on the floor or at a panel. Then you might find you're able to form a smaller group that goes out for lunch, or goes to one of the evening free movies, or whatever.

That would be easier than trying to organize one big meal-based get-together in the midst of the chaos that is SDCC.

I'm in for the week. I'd rather do something at the con durring the con. I'm not chained to my table, but don't want to stray too far...

If there is a food meet-up afterwards, I'll try to hit that as well.

name the time(s) and I'll try to be there

I'll be there all week, too. Maybe I should wear a mouse costume and cover Petersen's table while he's on breaks.

Jake Capps

Make that 2 mouse costumes, and we can have a Light Saber fight to get more people to stop by his table.

Ta2grrl
06-14-2006, 11:34 AM
Ok...

So it sounds like 2 meetups is a go since...as Ruta said..some will be unavailable for one or the other...

Since most folks are going to the Animated HB panel (those that are not working of course) then I would suggest that as at least ONE of the meetups...perhaps 9:45ish around the lineup where the panel is taking place...I am assuming that folks will be there earlier then 10:30 so as to be first in line...?!

The other could definately be a place to eat...maybe that Friday night after the panel and all is completed...say 8ish somewhere near the convention center??

I have no idea what is close by...perhaps people could throw out some suggestions??

Also if there are other suggestions for days and times then lets hear them...!!

Last year Petersen, J. Bastian and I went to Sammy's Woodfire Pizza (http://www.sammyspizza.com/locations.html) (links to address, map and menu, and a video of the place so you know what it looks like) in the Gaslamp area. It was pretty good (or so I recall, maybe Jeremy or David remember it differently), reasonably priced, with a varied and interesting menu featuring more than just pizza, and it was far enough away from the convention center that it wasn't too insanely busy, but for a large group you'll still want to make a reservation.

Their menu seems to suggest that they're able to accomodate special diets (see their "healthy dining menu" on the menu (http://www.sammyspizza.com/menu.html) page).

Then you can have leftover cold pizza for breakfast the next day. :)

p.s. I will be quiet now, since I'm not even going to be there! :(

I remember it the same way you do, Ruta. The cold pizza for breakfast was a nice start to the next day too. Pizza seems to be a firly universal 'like' for people.

What was the name of the place we went with Fitz & Kat, Spyda, Tad, Morna & Gary, and my friend Mike came with me?? I wished that I had ordered the steak..Fitz's looked good, and my chicken/pasta dish was only 'ok' I also saw yummy desserts at the table.

I'm down for whatever, Friday or Saturday, since those are the days I'll be at the convention. I'll be there probably Sunday morning as well but I'll be out of town no later than noon (traffic back to LA is often horrendous Sunday evening). One more vote for sushi here!

Also...our big sketchbook session is still being discussed but I'm pushing for a Saturday night session since a bunch of Dr. Tran shorts will be screening at the con Friday night at Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation...probably about 4 or 5 of them, including the original ones. I'll have more on the session as it comes closer, but the day and time will probably not be nailed down until we're all there so, you know...check back with me.

Sketchbook session: Yeah, basically, what Ta2grrl said. It's an extension of what we do weekly and monthly here in LA except we invite everyone who wants to get down attending the convention. We started this tradition a couple of years ago, taking over the nearby Marriot hotel bar and lobby for an evening, usually Friday or Saturday. Last year, the number of artists all drawing in the same room was pretty mind-boggling and lots of fun. Bring a sketchbook, sketch in your own book and draw in other artists' sketchbooks as well until the Marriot kicks us out!

Staying at the hostel with a friend of mine.

Leaving on Sunday at 2:20pm

I've apparently a few people to meet up with, if what my traveling partner tells me is right. Got a few panels to attend already, people to see.. I expect to be busy. So, I'll be around, just don't know times when I will be free just yet.

i am the non-artist friend of stygian but if you don't mind architectural drawings or some (gosh i haven't done a life drawing in a decade) regular drawings, i am definately in for the sketch book swap!

or if you need a house addition sketch with a hellboy flair, no problem!

speaking of architecture and mignola, i asked him last year if he would consider designing a couple stainglass windows for a church i was working on. he thought about it a little and said maybe. now i don't know about you, but i would love to see his art translated into stainglass!! lots of similiarities (no shading of color, lineweights vs. lead thicknesses, etc) and changing light would be a cool third dimension to his work...

anyway, if i ever get him to bite, i will definately post pictures and let it be a mecca for wandering hellboy fans.... nothing soon on the horizon but someday. if he had said yes, i think i actually had a pastor that might have gone for it too. but there are always more church jobs...

p.s. getting together away from the con sounds great. it lets everyone relax and be more themselves and there isn't nagging fear that you are missing something at the show. and i love all varieties of food, so any restaurant is great with me. mmm... fish tacos....

This is part of the fun! The first one I ever attended 5 or 6 years ago took place at some guy's house I didn't even know in a room full of people who didn't know each other. By the end of the night, half the people there were my best friends. :)

Just show up and start talking to people. Ask them to draw in your book. Draw in their book. You'll be salivating for next year and you'll want to start your own sessions when you get home.

I missed a lot of pages that I'm much too intoxicated (or is it under the influence? I don't know if there's any correct-like way to say 'stont') to read right at this moment, but didn't we meet one year at the dark horse booth and then play it by ear from there? that made figuring out what we're up to doing rather easy to do, and easy for me to find (i don't know anything about san diego, it's effectively a foriegn country to me still).

just throwin' that out, we did it either last year or the year before, my memory is currently shot.

Hello all,

I have just learned my itinerary and it looks like I will be getting into SD just before 10. I am not sure if it is going to be physically possible to get to the convention, get my pass, and get to the animation panel.

What time are folks gathering in the evening at the Dark Horse booth?

Did the date and time of the sketching session get set? I visited the other thread and didn't see anything specific. I guess we have time to schedule things but as this is my first Comic-con I am trying to put together an agenda for all of the things I want to include in the experience.

I am not sure if it is going to be physically possible to get to the convention, get my pass, and get to the animation panel.Weeelllll... the airport is just a few minutes from the convention center and there is a bag check service at the convention center. If you get a tail wind and you arrive early you could try. According to last year's guide, there is bag check at "Lobby, Hall A and Hall D". I don't know if that comma splice means "in the lobby at Hall A and at Hall D" or "in the lobby, as well as in Hall A and Hall D". Note that no wheeled luggage, dollies, anything that people will trip over is allowed on the dealer floor. I assume they would not be allowed in the meeting rooms either.

The schedule comes out, at most, two weeks before the con, I seem to recall. It always seems like it's really late.

When it finally appears online, I usually note the panels I really want to go to. Then once I get the guide at the con, I read the descriptions, pick out other panels that sound interesting and highlight them on the timetable grid printed on the last pages of the guide. Then I rip out the page for the current day for quick reference.

I also take out the map of the convention center and use that to make notes on as I'm walking around the floor and spot stuff I'd like to come back to later. I highly recommend this as you will not be able to find something if you see it and don't make note of where it is. The dealer floor is vast. VAST! Or just buy the thing that interests you when you see it, if you can afford to do that or you think it won't still be there later. Note that dealers may discount stuff on Sunday.

Darkhorse will also be releasing their booth schedule which will not be in the SDCC program guide. It will get linked to from here as soon as it is made available.

That's a really good idea Ruta! I usually avoid taking out any maps while I'm trotting around though, but instead take note of the aisle number (which are located near the ceiling of just about anywhere your standing while on the convention center floor- pretty standard for conventions these days). I'm usually carrying around enough crap to make a Sherpa balk, but I suppose I can take on one more task if it means making it easier to remember where things are later. :D Thanks!

:D Thanks!

Those shirts look great Sparky!!

Sherpa balk, good word usesage!

That's great news Andy! Of course, as in years past, you'll probably make it onto the showroom floor hours before any of us do. :D Enjoy the sites before everyone else hits the floor for me! :D

It's been a while since I've checked in on this thread, and I'm still not really sure where things stand, but meeting up Friday night for dinner sounds good to me. Awesome shirts, Sparky! Please let us know how to order 'em!

Well the animated panel is currently set for 10:30...how's 9:00 sound so we can all get to know each other in line...or at least head over there together??

Then we can also decide about dinner that same night...

Thoughts...??

9:00 AM Friday July 21st at the DarkHorse booth...??? Dinner time and place to be set then...??

9 am? AM??? morning...the light, it hurtsss usss...we're not morning people...

Could we do it after the panel? I know Tad will be monopolized by reporters (all wearing PRESS cards in their hatbands, flashguns popping madly, yelling "Mr. Stones! OVER HERE! Mr. Stones!" like in the movies) but it would give the people who will be rushing just to make it to the panel a chance (I think Treden is one of the folks who isn't going to be getting in until the last minute).

The con doesn't open until 10. Trying to meet outside is futile due to riots breaking out if people attempt cutting in line. Don't worry about including me since I may need to do more than the press stuff.

A 10:30 panel is bad enough - I'm afraid of a low turn out because of the schedule so if you can make it, drag any passers by there too.

Everybody should bring their Inflatable Helboy Fans TM! I have one right here – I keep it in the passenger seat of my car so I can drive in the HOV lanes. As it says on the label: Scatter liberally throughout audience for a fuller, more popular appearance. Serving suggestion only. When not in use please to keep in polybag.

Note: make sure you blow them up before the panel, as all that puffing and squeaking will be very distracting.

Remember Doug and Guillermo will be at the PAN booth with swag and doing sign-y goodness from 11:30 to 1:30. Said swag (which apparently includes a limited edition Mignola PAN poster) will go VERY QUICKY.

Hmm -- we could all meet at the Pan booth after the panel (we could all just walk over together and get in line) instead of the Dark Horse booth.

G and Doug will be doing the PAN panel on the Thursday, but will be at the Picturehouse PAN'S LABYRINTH booth on Friday from 11:30am to 1:30pm to sign stuff, do the picture-taking thang etc. So I'm guessing Guillermo will be dashing like a mad thing from the HB: ANIMATED thing to the PAN booth.

Do you know Hellmistress if this Mignola Pan's Labrynth poster will only be available during the signing, or will they have them available at the Picturhouse booth throughout the day? Also, do you know the booth number for Picturehouse?

Thanks in advance!

There are only 480 available, and it's first come first served, I believe. Whether this will only be during the signing I don't know yet (but I would expect this to be the case), but I'll have a word with Picturehouse and get a booth number ASAP. We were just told about the poster over on DTF by Guillermo himself, so I'll try and get more info. Mayhap Typh will have info on this one?

Ah, but ... you still have Guillermo - the signing won't start until he gets there, and you have tons of neat stuff and swag and a panel to die for, so stop worrying - all will be well. Plus I'm doin' me best to plug the crap out of HB Animated to anyone who'll listen, and I know Pat and m'self have it up on the websites. We can but try. But seriously, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Positive waves, man ... gotta keep with the positive waves ... :D

XXXEach booth is numbered on the map. Some of the larger booths/pavilions like Dark Horse or Lucasfilm have their logos as well. There are also banners hanging above the aisles indicating the aisle numbers [gdeo beat me to this!] which start at 100 in Hall A and go to 5300 in Hall G. Booth numbers start at XX01 at the front and go to around the 60s at the back.

Hey, the map is now online (the following is a PDF)!

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/forms/cci06exhib_floor.pdf

Further info, exhibitor list and links here:

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_exhib.shtml

Note that if an artist is sharing a booth with someone, or appearing as a guest of a publisher/exhibitor/retailer, they might not be listed in the guide.

Aaaaaand since I'm procrastinating from other things anyway, I grabbed the relevant section of the map for you. :) I assume I got the booths right. I assume no responsibility for people getting lost! ;)
