i found out about this anime last week, and since then i've d/led all 11 episodes of the 1st season. and i must say that the the show is great. it has one of the most original plots i've ever seen and the main characters all seem realistic. i reccomend this anime AND the manga (which goes even further into the story) to any1

I haven't seen the anime, but I enjoy the manga a lot... I like the unpredictable deadliness of the plot. ANY character might get whacked at any time, though I'm fairly certain that the main 3 characters are somewhat "safe", since we're following their story. But the story is mysterious and interesting, and very viscerally violent, which keeps the reader in the same sense of danger and confusion that the characters are forced to experience, trapped in the game.

I think it would make a great live-action TV series, myself... anime is traditionally the expanded route of manga, but in this case the characters and situations are depicted pretty realistically, so I think a live-action approach would work well with the subject matter.

This is definitely one of those shows where its best to go from the anime to the manga. The violence in the show is so (understandably) nuetered(sp?) that its pretty jarring after reading the manga. And seeing a quick cut/time lapse instead of showing what actually happened in manga.

Can I get a basic plot outline?

From what I understand (I'm only about 20 issues in) is that the story follows people who are snatched up just before they die. They are placed in a room and given specific missions, by something called gantz. They pretty much have no idea whats going on and try to survive the various missions they go on. I'm sure there is more to it than that.....
I can be pretty gory, and has some nudity thrown in too.

There are people who die violent deaths, who are snatched away at the very moment before they die and recreated wholly in a mysterious room somewhere in Japan... a room inhabited only by a huge black sphere named GANTZ.

They are provided with strange, advanced weapons and suits that can provide incredible protection and physical abilities, but not forced or even really encouraged by GANTZ to use these gifts, then transported with little warning to various locations in the city where they are expected to hunt and kill strange creatures that seem to exist disguised as men.

While playing "the game", the characters are apparently completely invisible to normal people, but still exist in the same world as everyone else. Their conflict is also invisible, but the effects of their battles are real and permanent. If anyone attempts to leave the game area, their heads automatically explode. After the last target is killed, all the surviving players are teleported back to GANTZ's apartment, healed of any injury short of death, scored and rated according to their performance, and released back into the "real world" until the next game. There's some hint that if they can survive long enough and score high enough, they might regain their freedom... but so far, no-one has survived the game.

Anyone in the manga might die... even what you might consider "main" characters. And it's that completely unpredictable nature of the manga that I find intriguing... the characters are thrown into "the game" without preamble, explanation or warning, and are forced to figure it out on their own, or die. Finding out how each character deals with GANTZ and the situation they're in (and who among them will survive their incredibly lethal new pasttime) can be very gripping. New characters are brought in and might be slaughtered quickly, or hang on and survive alongside the characters we began with... for now. There's just no real way to predict who will survive and who will die horribly.

I still haven't seen any of the anime, only read the first 80 or so chapters of the manga (they're still fighting the statues in the Bhuddist temple), and the comic still regularly surprises me. I hear the anime is pretty weak and watered down... personally, I think the concept is ideal for a live-action TV series.

Anyway, this is a great and messed up series. If only reality shows could be this cool. It reminds me of like a reality/game show (though without the suck) with a messed up intergalactic twist. The unpredictability and pure suddeness of 'WTF?! moments' certainly is a major apeal of the manga. Of course I'm sure teh graphic violence and sex and nudity are also draws. Heck, they have a Lara Croft lookalike get naked and get busy.

I also would love to see this thing made into a live action show. Heck, I'd even like to see an uncut American version on like cable or something. I know, not a chance in hell, but I'd love to see it.

Took about 3 seconds, for me...

I just hit about the halfway point of vol. 10 (ch. 115). This is probably the most disturbing manga I've read since Berserk, but it's very gripping. The whole thing has taken a twist that I never expected, and that keeps me reading, to find out what's going to happen now.

when the game is over and users are teleported back, is any damaged gear replenished, as well? if not, there's a glaring inconsistency in the rules that the writer has set.

The "teleportation" seems to fix any and all problems that you have when it occurs, both with your body and with your suit. You just have to have the parts handy.

Man, catching up rapidly... I just hit the point where Izumi is about to go one-one-one with the vampire. I gotta say, the story is always mixing it up in ways I don't expect... the whole setup of the black suits and their particular affliction/motivation came right out of left field, and it's interesting that, unlike GANTZ, these guys aren't restricting their hunt to any sort of "game time"...

It's funny how the whole story leading up to about chapter 100 is just the beginning...

I tlooks like you're partially right, so far, from the ending of 184. What I'm wondering is:

When are the new crew, aside from the gang-rapers, going to find out that it was Izumi who killed them all in Shinjuku?

It would definitely seem that the shit has hit the fan, for sure. I don't see how Kurono and Izumi can both survive this.

Wow, I just read the whole series. I was away from my fast connection, so I had to painfully download it all on a 56k. But even though I could have just waited a few days to go back home, I was too addicted!

I absolutely love this series, and I'm not sure I can really handle being completely caught up.

I can't believe that Kei hasn't told the others that Izumi was the one who killed them yet. I mean he clearly knew, and he had the opportunity those times that they've met up sans Izumi. Is he worried that Izumi will kill them again if they know?

God I hate Izumi. But it's always fun to see Kei humiliate him and make him feel inferior. I'm also seriously disliking the jerk who switched sides to be with Izumi and the rapists because he was jealous of Kurono's mad idol attracting skillz.

Re: the super weapons that are a prize for 100 points - I wonder if Izumis' sword is one? No one else seems to have one of those after all.

I'm so happy that the third prize is to resurrect people. It gives a great goal for Kei and lets him stay in the game beyond his 100 points (since he's already had to lose 46 to have lasted this long). I can't wait to see him resurrect Kato especially, since Kurono has finally succeeded him as the noble leader character. The two of them would make a great team now. Although if they're resurrected, will they be players or civilians? It'd be hard for Kishimoto to be a civilian with the original her running around..

I think the thing I like the most is that there's a real feeling of progression. Questions that we have are eventually answered, even if it takes over a hundred chapters to get around to it. It makes me sure that the questions I still have will be answered within time.

Considering one of the prizes is to leave the game with your memories erased, I find it unlikely that you get that as a bonus if you pick another prize.

On second reading of it I noticed that there were plenty of the swords lying around in that second room.

There were two motorcycles as well, and it really makes you wonder why they didn't bother taking one on the Ring aliens hunt. They didn't turn out to need one, but they didn't know that beforehand..

Now for actual spoilery comments:

I wonder whether the other two prizes were shown to that jerk Inaba or not? I think it's entirely possible that the third one, at least, was there solely for Kurono and designed to keep him in the game as long as possible. Since his track record puts him as the best player we've seen by a long way. At the current point it looks like he's going to try and get 100 points as many times as he can to resurrect as many people as he can.

But this new clause makes me think that Kurono will die at some point as well. Before it seemed highly unlikely, but now that there's a handy dandy resurrection device all bets are off.

What role do they play? Are they truly working out of self defense (kill or be killed) or is GANTZ turning out to be the "good guy" in all this by training the humans (albeit in a rather mean fashion) to prepare them for these guys.

And the chapter covers are nice. Yessire, they are indeed.

So it seems that Kei is about to get his big break with the ladies with this new Lara Croft lookalike girl. Good 'fer him. It seems as if he deserves it.

Speaking of which, doesn't it seem that Karma plays a heavy role in this? I mean all the douche bags seem to end up dead, while those with noble-er deeds end up living on.

I really love the parallels between Kei and Kato. How (at least way back here where i'm upto, compared to you guys) Kei wants to go back and Kato hates it. Great stuff.

I simply use the slideshow option built into Windows XP, if you're running that on your PC.. simply right+click the first file in the series and select PREVIEW. You can use your keyboard arrow keys to move back or forward through the series or you can hit F11 on your keyboard to start the automated slideshow.

BTW.. I seem to be going through withdrawals here as I wait for the next chapter :D

I think the kid is going to be the viewpoint character of the next hunt, rather than Kurono as it's basically always been. So that should be interesting. The preview says he refuses to wear his suit though... Which is pretty damn stupid.

You can say that again. It's beginning to seem like the author is slowly adding different characters, each with unique abilities, all working towards some sort of final showdown with a big enemy of some sort.

Kill off the redundant characters, weed it all down to an efficient superhero league of sorts.

I think that was a one-time rule that GANTZ set on to Kurono for that particular game. The rules change at GANTZ's whim, bastard that he is.

There's a lot of speculation on that one, but for now I don't think the questions been answered. On more than one occasion we've been suddenly introduced to new gadgets, such as the monocycle that Kurono and the team use against the dinosaurs... so it's possible that no-one else has found one, or that there only is one... or that it is indeed one of the "special weapons" that you can earn for victory.

But if that were true, would that not indicate that Izumi has reached 100 points twice? After all, the clues indicate that at some point he had chosen the "freedom" option and been released with his memories wiped... though not effectively enough to prevent them from resurfacing.

I'm only on chapter 167 but, does anyone know what happened to the dog from the early missions?

I'm honestly not too fond of the comic post-Chapter 94 or so. The plot twists are unexpected...in the worst way possible. There's just been so many manga cliches thrown out rapidly since the first major arc that it's really tried my patience.

I mean two people with mental powers, and a big "Ryu" rip off guy? I wanted to gag when I saw that. And the 'vampire's plot thread that brings Kei's brother into it sadly reminds me of the Matrix, and other animes that use the brother relationship too much to cause tension. I've seen it so much it's not suprising anymore.

Aside from my complaints I just want to commend Oku Hiroya on creating a great series, his pacing both in action scenes and overall plot has been materful. He's set up the universe and concepts of Gantz so well that you can't help but say "oh shite" whenever you see a suit go bad, or if a gun doesn't kill something. The art is great, and there are actual detail backgrounds, something that at least to me seems to be missng from a lot of manga theses days. I'm staring at you Full Metal Alchemist.

The scanslators changed from the elite Omanga to Shocwave (which is now up to a very high quality, but at first was not).

Basically Omanga are awesome but they basically stopped scanslating it while Shocwave was dedicated to catching up.

Well I'm finally totally caught up, the Tae thing suprised me at first, but then the series got a little DBZ feel to it. Both with psychic boy as a do-gooder in real life and Kei's new motivation. The way Gantz operates thus far its hard to see that "third option" as something less than a copout, Gantz has never shown any compassion before.

And those Batman esque "Next week" things are just sad. I'll keep reading though.

I saw a few eps at an anime club some friends run recently too. Well, they're the undergound and unoffitial club and I help run the legit school approved one. They had no idea it was picked up or that they copies they had were edited. I was the only one who knew anything aobut it and was rather raving about it and more than a little ticked at the edits.

Of course the 2 ep per DVD count is annoying as hell. I think ADV had some contract issue. The box, for only half the damn series and the size of a usual whole one, is gorgeous. Yet I'm gonna have to wait for the full collection because Gantz just sucks at two eps every how many months.

When it gives the answer to what you can do with your 100 points are tose three things options. As in opting to bring Tae back to life and staying in the Gantz program? Or is it that you get to do all three. Because I'm thinking it's a choice but I'm not sure.

I believed it's implied that Izumi has gotten 100 points in the past and opted for the "escape" option, which results in your memory being altered and then you're released back into the population... though I don't know if it mentions whether or not the alterations GANTZ adds to his players (bomb in the brain, for instance) are also removed

The targets appear to be regular humans, but ones who are aware of the Gantzers and can see them. Judging by the preview line I think the Oni aliens possess humans or use human shells like that one Short alien.

No, it says 100 Point Menu at the top of the three options. And there's only evidence that Izumi had his memory erased and he was freed - there's nothing to say that he either revived someone or obtained a superpowerful weapon. The sword that he has is one of at least four, it's just that he's the only one so far to use it. Much like the sniper dude is the only one to have used the scope on the rifle weapons. It's just something that more experienced players know about.

They are, I've said this a number of times already. If you look at that story in volume 11 (IIRC) you'll see that when Kurono opens the door to look inside there are four more swords lying on the floor there.

Regarding the sniper:

I think the implication (from his attitude and aptitude) was that this was someone with previous experience in using weapons, and sniper rifles in particular... there's a wide range of different people who are taken by GANTZ, so it's no surprise when some of them are posessed of combat experience, former soldiers or Yakuza and so forth.

So even though he was unfamiliar with the GANTZ weapons in particular, he was able to quickly adapt, and was much faster on the uptake when it came to asserting himself and taking a specific role in the battle.

Personally, I think the author is going to keep the kid alive at all costs. The Countryside General A.K.A Muscle Rider will in turn give his life to save the kid. You can kinda see the foreshadowing. He is starting to get a soft spot for the kid. Just my opinion though.

Well, i don't think we're supposed to be linking to Bit Torrent sites, even ones with unliscened stuff, nevermind stuff out on DVD here. Anyway,I got friends who have all the eps anyway. Well ecept for like 13 and 14.

Though I really don't care as I've read the manga and it's much better. Plus all the fansubs on bit torrent and the net are the censored vesions. Yes, even for Japan they had to cut much out. The censored eps are pretty raunchy and gory anyway.

As for the DVDs, after hearing what my friend said about how they end the series and ignore the manga, I might just buy half the series when the first box comes out and stick to the manga for the rest. I liked Hellsing when it created an ending, a side mini boss, for the show. That wasn't bad. The book's better, but the show is good. What I heard happened in Gantz makes me not too interested in finishing the anime.

Yes, manga is too often written off as Pokemon or porn, but at the same time in Japan many manga does borderline pornography and much of its porn is manga. It does become hard sometimes to know what you are getting into or even what you want to recommend or give to your kids. Of course not all are full nudity and hardcore sex, there are varying degress of it.

Reminds me of an interesting note on another series. The other night I discovered a site with some early works by the guy who did Hellsing. A number of characters in Hellsing are from his hentai mangas. He even mentions this in the notes of the Hellsing books in the US.

Of course many seinen and older teen titles have sex in it. Sex sells. Though Gantz does feel like one of the cheaper ones, but not quite pornographic. As sudden as the sex is, it does feel like it does have a purpose. I think it's a social and generational commentary on sex. Then again each chapter stars off with half to fully naked girls in Gantz outfits.

Oh yeah, looking over some chapter the other day, one of the models sure looked like Fujiko from Lupin.

Like the wallf*cking chick, if he hadn't screwed her there wouldn't be the part where he goes back to her after killing that guy with the amazing double leg/double arm/head shot. And there wouldn't be the part where she dies to save him. It's all an integral part of the story.
Hell no would I let a little kid watch or read this. All of us that have posted can see how the sex can be included in the story and how it shapes the story. Besides were all mature and can deal with borderline porn. If not, you may not be mature enough to read this manga.

So far in the Oni Alien hunt of the experienced Gantzers we've only really seen Reika - the people she was with were all newbies. And Reika has only actively taken part in one hunt before - the Ring Aliens. She did take down one of them, but they neither talked nor had human appearances.

Reika's hesitation was because of those factors. The newbies are just newbies. And even so, once the Oni transformed she started attacking.

Probably we'll see that Kurono and Jerksuit are taking them down left and right. CG, the most experienced fighter after them is probably looking after the kid.

I do have my own theory(not sure if its solid though): Aliens have their own gantz and are dead and must hunt other aliens(humans) to survive? The midget alien guy gives some support to this theory, he was mad for kurono for killing all his friends?

I think perhaps some of them are... asleep. Dormant in mundane forms until awoken by something. That might be the Gantzers, or the Gantzers might be sent to stop them before they can do too much damage after being awoken.

I had a thought about something else, as well.

Specifically: the nature of the "super powerful weapon" that's a victory option. I thought that just a regular but powerful weapon would probably suck, because what would stop someone from stealing it from you? So then I thought, what sort of weapon could only be used by you.

And it came to me - superpowers. We've seen superpowered people who didn't seem to have any connection to Gantz, but what if the true source of their power is Gantz. Sakata said he remembered seeing or hearind something about the black ball before, and he also said that he got his powers from someone else who made the same alteration to his brain that he did to Cherry. And then CG comes from the country, but he doesn't seem to know why he's so strong - maybe one of his parents was a Gantzer and got the weapon, which turned out to be an enhanced body without a suit, and then the alteration was passed down to him? It would be a cool way of tying together the different people with superpowers out there who before didn't seem to have any connection to the rest of the insanity.

Kei is vastly different to how he was back at the beginning. Remember the dinosaur hunt when he told Cherry and Sakata to guard the family? His goal now isn't to save Tae, it's to bring everyone back to life. Everyone. I think faced with the immediate option to bring back either Tae or the kid who just died, he might just pick the kid.

Sure, he's changed a lot, but that doesn't mean he will resurrect the kid ove Tae. With Kishimoto and Katou, he moved on quickly after they died, so what's to say that he will give a shit about the kid. Personally resurrections will go in the order: Tae, Katou, Kishimoto, the chick that looks like Lara Croft. Reika will come before the Lara look-a-like if she happens to die. Doubt she will though.

With this anything as a weapon is possible, but peep this, what if Sakata's powers was hi super weapon and when he was put back into Gantz they started slowly deteriorating into nothing. What if the super weapon was unique to each person? That would set it as a infinite possiblity factor.

Depends on the person. If it's something you think they'd like then recommend away. It's well worth the read as you already know. You should preface the recommendation by telling them that all manga isn't like this. I'd hate to see someone coming off of Gantz and thinking they can get the same experience somewhere else.
