Last week I went to the videostore and I rented 3 movies: The Constant Gardener, Casanova, and House of Wax (the one with Paris Hilton). Funny thing: House of Wax actually turned out to be the best of the three. I was surprised to find out that it was one of the best slasher movies in a while. It was beautifully brutal, and even Paris Hilton didnt ruin it.

It was so brutal in fact, that I was wondering how much worse movies like Saw and Hostel could possibly be. The scenes in HOW when the finger was cut off, or when the wax skin is being pulled off, those were pretty gross, so how much worse could it get?

So what did you guys think of this movie? Are Saw and Hostel really worse?

I liked it and I thought it was better than alot of horror movies in recent years.

Saw was more about Sadism and mental torture than blood and guts. Don't get me wrong there was plenty of that too but it has more about mental headgames than anything else.

Let's face it...Paris stole the show in that one. I didn't really want to see her get taken out like that.

Just saw Hostel last week and it has a good twist to what seemed to be a boring little movie at first. But Saw? Loved it. Good twists and had you thinking all the way through.

Well I just remember people saying that SAW and HOSTEL were very gory and viloent in a very real way, but HOW seemed very gory and violent too, so how bad could SAW and Hostel be in terms of gore?

Hostel's gore is a lot more convincing than House of Wax's. It's probably just a matter of budget.

I would think that Wax would of had the bigger budget of the two? Or maybe not.

House of Wax was a lot better than I thought it would be.
The gore was okay and the use of actual wax instead of complete CG make it look really challenging for the actors in certain scenes which added to the "realism" of the film.

I wasn't really all that impressed by Saw but that me be because everyone hyped it to be the most genius film ever.

Hostel got good towards the end when it actually became a horror flick and stopped being Eurotrip. Some of the Gore really stood out and made me a bit squeamish.

Another good flick for Gore is High Tension. They try to go for a twist but it doesn't exactly seem all that plausible. However, if you want blood, you will find enough to sate your sick & twisted appetite.

Quentin Tarantino was one of the executive producers on Hostel, so he probably put a little money into it.

It's really not a bad flick. Give it a rental. High Tension's also pretty good, but don't think too long about the ending...

Count me also as a fan of House of Wax. I thought it was actually well-done and had some genuinely gripping moments.

The climax with the melting house---has that ever been done before in a movie??

realistic skull crushing? check

realistic slashing of achilles tendons? check

realistic blowtorching of eyeball? check

Hostel was far gorier, if you ask me.

SAW was overrated and i didn't like some of the "artistic" camera shots. but that little dummy on the bicycle was creepy as hell. if you want to see another really bloody movie, try the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. it's got 2 or 3 extremely violent scenes in it. maybe nothing like Paris Hilton's "shoe commercial" though.

Actually, I saw the Texas Chaisaw Massacre, and I remember it being pretty funny. Not intentionally, but some of the camera angles during some of the most violent scenes just got over the top. I did like that one though.

I too thought Paris would have ruined the movie. She did alright though. She especially "died real good".
