I must say no really, but that my opinion.
It's intresting with versions of the diffrent heroes from a distant future (when a possible issue 1.000.000 of the title would be out) but i thought most of the issues was bad.

It's very good. We get to see Morrison use some of his Superman ideas years before All-Star Superman. It lacks the overly "grim and gritty" element that makes so many other comics hard to read. Plus, the ending is fantastic.

It's great. Grant Morrison goes a bit mental and you have to work to keep up with the plot, but it's one of those idea filled superhero extravagansas that Grant Morrison does so well

It's a decent story, but not something that I'd really wanna shout about.

As Mr Dancj said, you have to concentrate to keep up though.

It's the best crossover event DC's done. Not that that's saying all that much, but it is really good.

It's Morrison. If you like what he does and can put up with the weirdness, meandering, lack of resolution, etc.--if those are all signs of genius to you--then you'll love it.

I thought it was an utter waste of time, personally.

The Young Justice one was hilarious. One of my cherished comics. So happy that I got Peter David to sign it at this year's Wondercon.

I though that it was technically good, but there was one very 'off putting' aspect to this story.

It almost felt like Superman worship.

I know that he is a premier hero, and central figure, but this story also featured a large amount of other characters.

To me it felt like they were just props in the Superman show.

I was reviewing comic books at the time and I read every issue of it. I remember Starman #1,000,000 and Resurrection Man #1,000,000 were hands-down highlights. For a company-wide crossover it was well-done. The series itself is solid Morrison superheroics; not his best work but a good read with a lot of interesting ideas thrown in. Watch out for Solaris, the Tyrant Sun!

Lex

I think DC One Million was one of the most creative and imaginative stories DC has ever produced. And that's because Morrison wrote the whole thing... he even ghost wrote most of the tie-in issues (which meant that, for the first time, all the crossover tie-in issues were actually good!).

This was the best thing to come out of the 90's and is what energized me about comics at a time when I was bored with most comics I read.

Everyone should do themselves a favor and track down every DC One Million issue they can find.

Personally i hear about it every so often, what is it like?I havent been able to find a back issue of it anywhere..

It's Grant Morrison writing about the future of the DCU. Farther than The Legion of Super-Heroes exist. It takes place in the 853rd-century.

The heroes of the future are preparing to welcome back the original Superman (well, their universe's Superman, which means Kal-El) after Kal went into a bit of a self-imposed exile/ retirement a few thousand years prior. The Justice League learns of a plot to try and assasinate Superman and try to stop it.

And please note that my pathetic little summery is not doing this story justice. It's really very good. Easily the best DC Crossover I have ever read, if not the best crossover I have ever read.

The main story takes place in DC One Million #1-2, JLA #1,000,000 and DC One Million #3-4 (in that order).

That's just the bacis main story, but a lot of important events happen in the tie-in books that lead directly into the main books.

There are several different stories going on in the tie-ins. Some of the focus on what's going on in the present while others follow the JLA into the future.

Present Day Adventures:

Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1,000,000
Nightwing #1,000,000
Superman: Man of Steel #1,000,000
Starman #1,000,000
Impulse #1,000,000
Detective Comics #1,000,000
Superman #1,000,000

Adventures of the JLA in the future:

Action Comics #1,000,000
Green Lantern #1,000,000
Power of Shazam! #1,000,000 (leads into Flash)
Batman #1,000,000
Superman #1,000,000
Aquaman #1,000,000
Wonder Woman #1,000,000
Martian Manhunter #1,000,000
Adventures of Superman #1,000,000
Ressurection Man #1,000,000
Catwoman #1,000,000
Robin #1,000,000
Flash #1,000,000
Superman: Man of Tomorrow #1,000,000

This is my attempt to get the various stories in the proper order for reading:

DC One Million #1
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1,000,000
Nightwing #1,000,000
DC One Million #2
Superman: Man of Steel #1,000,000
Impulse #1,000,000
Detective Comics #1,000,000
Superman #1,000,000
Green Lantern #1,000,000
Starman #1,000,000
JLA #1,000,000
DC One Million #3
Batman #1,000,000
Catwoman #1,000,000
Robin #1,000,000
Action Comics #1,000,000
Adventures of Superman #1,000,000
Ressurection Man #1,000,000
Aquaman #1,000,000
Wonder Woman #1,000,000
Power of Shazam! #1,000,000
Flash #1,000,000
Superman: Man of Tomorrw #1,000,000
Matian Manhunter #1,000,000
Chronos #1,000,000 (unrelated story, but it connects to the very end of DC1M #4)
DC One Million #4

#1,000,000 books that don't tie into the main plot, but are still worth checking out:

Young Justice #1,000,000
Green Arrow #1,000,000 (actually takes place between Adventures of Superman 1M and Ressurection Man 1M, but doesn't effect the plot)
Azrael #1,000,000 (the most fun of the future books)
Superboy #1,000,000
Chase #1,000,000
Creeper #1,000,000 (the most "out there" of the future books)
Supergirl #1,000,000
Hitman #1,000,000
Young Heroes in Love #1,000,000
Legionnaries #1,000,000 and Legion of Super-Heroes #1,000,000 (in that order)

Hope that helps!

I think it's better that you buy some ordinary more mainstream trades and read about the heroes to know them some more.
I think you would like those elseworld like storys better after that.

I disliked it the first time I've read it, but I've enjoyed it more and more each time I've read it. I'm not a big fan of time travel stories, but this one won me over with its imagination and its cool ending.

Almost all of the crossovers were excellent, too. I particularly liked MARTIAN MANHUNTER. (Hated SUPERGIRL, though. But admittedly, I don't understand the appeal of Peter David's sense of humour.)

wait why did super man live in the sun??? lol

Lex
06-18-2006, 07:51 PM
Well, he was wandering the universe until about 70,000 AD. He learned a lot about his powers in that time and, when he returned to Earth, he granted his descendants a portion of that power if they promised to continue protecting Earth and the Solar System. He decided to set up a Fortress of Solitude in the heart of the Sun to rest for the next 15,000 years.

His emergance from the Sun in 85,271 AD was to be a special event, ushering in a new age of... um... super-awesomeness.

EDIT: And I think him being in the Sun helped with the transfer of power to the Supermen and Superwomen who needed it.

One little thing about DC1M that's kind of spiritually satisfying is that they still use our calendar in the future. That even after 83 centuries, people still use Christ's birth (or an approximation thereof) as the starting point for measuring time.

It has its moments. It was a bit too cheesey for my tastes though. Some chapters were better than others (as posters have mentioned). I am not a fan of the Silver Age and "punching through time" so it left me flat. It's good innocent fun though.

Of course it's Superman worship. It was published in 1998, the 60th anniversary of Superman's first appearance.

Amazon link (http://www.amazon.com/JLA-One-Million-Various/dp/1401203205/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-8616370-8631332?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184429453&sr=8-1) It's been renamed JLA One Million, probably due to recognizability.

Also, check the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_One_Million

The trade is all you need, but there's some fun stuff it doesn't cover.

It's a fantastic story full of sci-fi wonder, sharp characterization, and who ever said that there wasn't a resolution was lying his pants off.

One little thing about DC1M that's kind of spiritually satisfying is that they still use our calendar in the future. That even after 83 centuries, people still use Christ's birth (or an approximation thereof) as the starting point for measuring time.

Not to mention that the main storyline is essentially a Christian allegory, with Superman playing the role of Jesus Christ. He starts the superhero thing, leaves earth and promises to return, inspires countless generations of heroes waiting for his second coming, ushers in a a paradise on earth and restores Krypton (a new Krypton and a new earth), as well as bring Lois back to life (you could call her the church).

I disagree with that last part. I thought that, for a crossover, just about all the tie-in issues were good. I thought the writers really stepped up their games and came up with very imaginative stories for their tie-ins. (Though rumor has it that Morrison ghost wrote some of the tie-ins).

Considering how seamlessly some stories flowed into each other (like Green Lantern --> Martian Manhunter --> Resurrection Man) I wouldn't be too surprised if that were the case.

DC 1,000,000 is a tribute to Superman and the Silver Age. It is a story that works for DC (I can never see such a positive, non-cynical storyline in Marvel, does Marvel even have any positive future timelines or do they all go down the crapper).

Basically, if you love the DC universe, you'll love DC 1,000,000. If you always though Silver Age DC was kind of cheesy, then DC 1,000,000 will reinforce that viewpoint.

It's kinda ok. There were certain elements that were cool(like the golden Superman, who recently appeared in All-Star Superman and Aquaman wielding an anchor, Wonder Woman made of living marble, etc). But that part where the JLA of the future(or whatever they were called by then) pulled the then-current JLA into the future to participate in Olympic style games to celebrate Superman's emergance from the sun after yay many years was Silver Age canned corn, man.

And Solaris was a little bitch. "Sentient sun" my ass.
