I had the original. My son was inquiring about getting one. I've been wanting to play some multiplayer games and since no one else I know has one and I don't have high speed internet at home for Wi-Fi games ... my son has my original and I have a Lite.
Great improvements on a game I didn't realize needed improvements.
Better stylus - Bigger easier to use.
Softer buttons - The old ones were fine but the feel of the new buttons are much better.
Brighter screen - 4 light setting and the dimmest is still brighter than the old DS settings. The colors are a lot more vibrant on games like the New Super Mario Bros. (an excellent game btw :) )
More compact design. It's quite a bit thinner and a little smaller in length and width. Also it's lighter (in terms of weight and brightness).
The GBA games stick out a little when you insert them. That's a bit of an annoyance to me but not to bad. It does come with a filler GBA slot to put in when you don't have a GBA game in it to keep the dust out.
I don't think its as huge an improvement as the original GBA to the GBA SP was. I mean the DS original and the lite both are clamshell designed and have backlight feature. It is a great improvement though. If you don't have one I'd say spend the money and get the lite. If you already have one - Well if you can afford it I'd upgrade or if you can trade in somethings I might upgrade. I don't think its a "must do this now" type deal though. Just my thoughts on it.
