View Full Version : Just For The Heckuvit: Most Lesbian Overtones In Films?

I just finished reading the thread concerning gay overtones in movies like Predator and Top Gun, and laughed out loud (no pun intended).

So I figured, what the hey and I wonder what movies do you guys (and gals) out there think have the most overt lesbian overtones?

Really, I'm not sure myself so I turn it over to you........

Silent Hill was really about the persecution of lesbians.

That's going in my "Didn't See That Coming" file.

Just to get it out there, I'm sure an argument can be made for Thelma & Louise (never seen it all the way through, myself, though...)

I did start this thread so I might as well add to it.

A case could be made for the flashbacks in Fried Green Tomatoes.

I dont know what the name of that movie is called but it had Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman in it and I did get some vibes.

Well, there's always the Hunger, but then again that wasn't exactly "overtones".

They were both in Heat, but never on screen at the same time.

So I guess you mean Where The Heart Is.

Never saw it. Cant comment.

I'd agree with Fried Green Tomatoes though.

The Color Purple. I know they were sisters but they seem to care about eachother a little too much.

Looking back to the classics, Rebecca certainly brought on the lesbian overtones! Mrs. Danvers seemed a little TOO invested in Maxim's wives, didn't she?

Dracula's Daughter played with lesbianism by establishing the female vampire as a metaphor for lesbianism in horror films.

The Haunting (60's version) strongly suggested the lesbian themes by hinting at Claire Bloom's Theo as the true "evil" in the house. Theo's flirting with the heroine also clearly said "lesbian themes for film scholars to explore in essay".

According to the novel which inspired the film, there was no "suggestion" of lesbianism in Fried Green Tomatoes. The women were definitely lovers.

Not to mention the whole, y'know, main character being a lesbian and falling in love with Shug Avery. ;)

Its hard to see that movie all the way through on account of Geena Davis' gummy smile

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon possibly

I love the lesbian vampire oeuvre that began with Dracula's Daughter - and not just for pervert purposes. Lust for a Vampire, The Vampire Lovers, Blood and Roses, up to the more explicit The Hunger - all classics.

JOHNNY GUITAR, in which a sexually frustrated Mercedes "Voice of The Exorcist" McCambridge whips up a lynch mob to vent her hate on Joan Crawford, ostensibly for Joan robbing a bank and stealing her beau, The Dancin' Kid, but in reality over Crawford's rejection of her advances. Throw Ernest Borgnine, John Carradine, and Sterling Hayden as Johnny Guitar (a gunslinger turned musician) into the mix, shake well, and let Nicholas Ray direct it, and you have got what has deservedly been called "the weirdest Western ever made." Five stars. Check it out.

Embrace The Vampire. Alyssa Milano actually made out with a female vampire in that IIRC.

Not only that, but the author of the book, Fannie Flagg, is a lesbian as well. She had been in a relationship with Rita Mae Brown.

I'm thinking Alien. Think about it. The men are are eliminated and proven to be useless thus leaving Ripley alone with her cat (how's that for symbolism). Not to mention the phallic shape of the alien. Basically it's a movie about Sigourney Weaver fighting a giant penis.

That and the Queen Aliens obsession of using Ripley as a mate.;)

The Charlies Angels Remake. For a split second I was expecting all three of the girls to get involved into a lesbian orgy.

i think it kinda lays it on the line when you get that shot of mercedes while the saloon goes up in flames, she looks positively orgasmic and then the cut to joan putting on "men's" clothes...and then the final shoot out...there's definitely mucho lesbian subtext going on...a few of the movies mentioned that were adaptations were basically watered down versions of the actual lesbian content in the source matrerial, such as the color purple and fried green tomatoes...and a few where there's explicit lesbian content, such as the hunger...but to point out films were lesbianism is not apart of the actual context...i think bend it like beckham, thelma and louise, the business of strangers, the children's hour, single white female, and nevada kinda best exemplify the idea of lebianism as subtext...but yeah...check out the celluloid closet...i think any film buff would enjoy it.

Actually, it's more about the struggle of Ripley to survive a cruel mother (the ship itself) and a biological threat in the alien. Substitute "cryo-chambers" for "mini-wombs" and you'll see what I mean. The alien lurks in the corridors of the ship, killing off the crew one-by-one. "Mother" is useless, detached, and uncaring to her "children's" plight.

There's some valdity in that. Though I kind of think the alien represents an unwanted birth as well. I forget that the ship had a personality of it's own throughout the movie. That is an important detail.

Man... remember when Ridley Scott made smart movies. Those were the days.

In the case of the Firefly family, I'm not sure that bunch of sexual-psychopaths could be considered gay or straight.

Their sexual release comes from killing and from what I've seen the sex of the victim hardly matters.

I dont know about that. The majority of the victims Otis usually fools around with are women so he seems to be pretty straight to me.

The Joy Luck Club. Nearly all the men were worthless, and the only comfort that the women could find was with each other, with the main character coming to grips with who she was on the inside in order to go to the "motherland" to find something she never knew she had.

Something like that;)

i hadn't thought about jun being gay until my brother mentioned it to me while we were watching it...and i'd seen the movie about 4 times at that point and it never occured to me until he said something and i was like..."oh..."...and it made sense... :D

Also, the entrance to the derelict spaceship where they find the alien eggs is meant to resemble a vagina...

Pretty much that whole movie is about twisting the reproductive cycle into its most evil and horrifying forms.
