View Full Version : Avatar Contest for the Week of 6/07/06

You know, the easy part is winning. The hard part is thinking up a new contest.

I just want to start with a quick rundown on what the Av contest is for newer posters.

The person who wins the last contest picks a theme, the posters all make an avatar according that fits the theme. Come Tuesday of the next week, we vote on whose is the “best”. The only prize is that the winner gets to pick the next contest.

Please don’t suggest avatars. People like thinking stuff up themselves and it’s frowned upon. If you think of a neat Avatar idea, why not take it yourself?

That said… new theme!

Okay, I was debating a lot of ideas, some which were mildly offensive.

Screw that, I thought! Let’s go for full-on offensive!

So this weeks theme? Freudian Imagery.

Really.

Comics, cartoons, the media, even architecture is rife with it.

For example, and I’ll be using this one myself, take the Sword of Omens. It grows bigger and then a beam of light shoots out the tip. O…kay.

So yeah, Freud in general, Freudian Imagery in specific.

Sometimes the famous and obvious is famous and obvious for a reason. It's hard to beat the Rifleman's log.

If it's any consolation, I thought of going with some of Giger's stuff, but decided not to simply because I've run into so many people over the years - including at least one who posts regularly on Comm - who tends to find Giger's imagery intensely disturbing.

Well, it's not as clear as I'd like, and I wasn't able to incorporate all of the panels in the final avatar, but here it is. The head of an alien is already extremely phallic, then add in the constant drooling, and the crazy little mouth that jumps out, and, well...

OK, perhaps a little more obscure, but I remember reading an article on the web about the various AQUAMAN covers featuring the King of the Seven Seas getting sucked into various maws. This one stood out in my memory:

http://image.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/fullsize/04272332008.55.GIF

Aquaman can't stop shrinking and falling into the irresistible suction of the pink oval, as his wife and adopted son look on. (Please note the layout of the cover and where the pink ring is placed in relation to Mera.)

Nope. No fear of women there.

Just so we get this straight. So to speak.

Frame 1: She-Ra holding her sword out of her pubic area. That one is fairly self-explanatory.
http://ualbanyhillel.org/gadi/she-ra.jpg

Frame 2: She-Ra, grasping her turgid sword a little too lovingly. I thought about just animating her hand a bit in this shot, but thought better of it.

http://www.he-man.org/cartoon/cmotu-pop/powerpose5.jpg

And the last frame is the piece de resistance. He-Man hugging She-Ra, his twin sister, both of them firmly grasping their erect swords.

One of the most famous types of Freudian imagery is so-called "subliminal advertising" in which images, usually of a sexual nature, are hidden within an otherwise innocuous tableau, such as in this example:

Bouncing Boy

I'm continuing my Oz theme with the Wicked Witch of the West and her broomstick. You'll notice in the picture that not only is she holding her broomstick between her legs, but her pet flying monkey is trying to touch it. Now that's Freudian!

Was going to sit this one out... not fan of penises which I knew was where it was going to go.

However, my entry is on the far fetched ideas that people come up with to try to put Freudian ideas on things.... most recently brought to light.... again.... is Da Vinci's Last supper. http://fits.depauw.edu/aharris/Courses/ArtH132/galleries/images/fullsize/fs_da_Vinci_Last_Supper_cleaned.jpgWhere some have suggested that the spacing of Jesus and the person to his right makes am intentional V shape which has been suggested is a vagina or a cup for sacrificial wine.

Note however that the sides then, are not the typical wine goblet used in the time, but of a glass made more famous by the Vodka Martini. http://hyl.edu.hel.fi/~petri/petri/kaikkiatk/oppilastoitaysitkaksi/bond/images/martini.jpg
Which suggests that Jesus was really a British spy, (which makes all the BBC specials of Jesus with an Anglican look and British Accent more plausible) and that the figure to his right leaning away from him must have been a KGB agent conspiring with Judas to have Jesus killed. (the 00 agents had a knack for getting themselves killed)

Christ, Jesus Christ
