Supergirl first appeared in 19591 in Action Comics #252, the same DC comicbook in which Superman debuted. Supergirl was Superman's cousin Kara from Argo City, Krypton. Sole survivor of the doomed planetoid which had hurtled away intact from an exploding Krypton - with a huge bubble of air conveniently attached - Supergirl crash-landed on Earth, just as her famous cousin originally had, after Argo City itself fell prey to deadly green-kryptonite radiation.2 She had a red, yellow and blue uniform emblazoned with the family crest, a secret earthly identity (Linda Lee), and typical Kryptonian superpowers. Supergirl was 15 when she first landed on Earth. The encyclopedic Great Superman Book has this to say about Supergirl:
"Supergirl functions periodically, from May 1959 onward, as Superman's companion in super-heroic adventures. She is in reality Kara, Superman's first cousin, the daughter of the Kryptonian scientist Zor-El and his wife Alura.3 Born and raised on Argo City, a city of the planet Krypton which survived the death of its native planet when it was hurled into outer space, people and buildings alive and intact, by the force of the cataclysm that destroyed Krypton, she was - at the age of fifteen - launched toward Earth in a small rocket ship by her father Zor-El when the city faced extinction due to kryptonite poisoning.
On Earth, like any Kryptonian survivor, she acquired super-powers identical to Superman's. Kara she assumed the secret alternate identity of Linda Lee, an orphan at the Midvale Orphanage, concealing her blond hair beneath a brunette wig and functioning as Supergirl only in secret (at Superman's insistence) until 1962. She made her debut to the world in Action Comics #285. It seems that Superman could not handle a woman having a public (heroic) career anymore than many 1960's men could: Kal-El's insistence on keeping Supergirl's abilities secret, and her attempts to assert herself in check, bordered on the obsessive. Adopted by Fred and Edna Danvers, she attended Midvale High School as Linda Lee Danvers, graduated in 1964, and then went on to attend Stanhope College on a scholarship, graduating in 1971.
Supergirl's alternate identity is a closely held secret, but it is known to Superman, to her foster parents the Danverses, and to the Legion of Super-Heroes, of which she served as a member until resigning her membership at the age of twenty-one. Supergirl is fully aware that her cousin Superman is secretly Clark Kent. Like all Kryptonian survivors, Supergirl is vulnerable to kryptonite. Comet the Super-Horse is Supergirl's pet and equine companion. Streaky, the orange cat that acquires temporary super-powers as the result of its exposure to 'X-kryptonite', is Linda Lee Danvers' pet cat."

Superman and the remaining inhabitants of the merged DC universe were introduced to the second Supergirl in the three part "Supergirl Saga" that ran in the Superman comicbooks of September-October 1988 (SUPERMAN #21, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #444, SUPERMAN #22). Her appearance is foreshadowed in SUPERMAN #16, as a mysterious woman clothed in a Super uniform is found frozen in the ice in the Arctic. Once again, another parallel Earth hidden away in a "pocket dimension" was threatened and needed the aid of Superman. On this Earth, Superman had started his superheroic career as Superboy, but had disappeared 10 years earlier and left his world without a superhero. Now evil Kryptonians were invading this planet and its defences were weakening. A benevolent Lex Luthor and his wife, Lana Lang, fought bravely to oppose them, but Lana was killed and the world seemed doomed without a superhero. In honor of his wife and in memory of Superboy, Lex created an artificial, shapeshifting lifeform named "Supergirl" based on his wife's form (her molecular matrix to be specific) and imprinted her with Lana's memories.
The stage was set for another historic meeting of Superman and his female counterpart. The fledging superheroine travelled to Earth Prime to bring back Superman in hopes that, together, they might defeat the supervillains. But in the battle that followed, her world was destroyed and she was its sole survivor. Greatly injured from her confrontation, Superman brought Supergirl back with him and left her with the Kents to recover. Soon she would strike out on her own, but it would take some years for the new Supergirl to truly find herself.
Between the 3-issue origin miniseries and the modern Supergirl series that began in 1996, this Supergirl - or "Matrix" as she called herself - had a number of specials, a four-issue miniseries, and periodic guest appearances in the Superman comics. For a while she mistakenly took up with the evil Lex Luthor II (actually Lex Luthor in disguise), believing him to be like the benevolent Luthor of her world. Eventually she discovered Luthor's true nature and took off. She drifted, a superhero without a purpose or a base. The memories of her original planet faded, and she found herself a superhero with no secret identity and few real ties to her adopted home. Matrix faced the existential crisis of a superhero without an identity - a creation of men, she struggled to find her purpose in this world. Luckily, Kara's spirit lived on (while Crisis had killed the bodies of many Silver Age heros, it has been noted that their souls continued to exist). Kara had found another Linda Danvers and become her "guardian angel". Matrix had the superpowers and form of Supergirl, and Linda had the heart and spirit of the first Supergirl. Together, they became the real Supergirl of the Post-Crisis world.

A new Supergirl was introduced into the DC universe in 2004. This is where things get weird, because there's already been a post-Crisis Supergirl with a big series (you know, the one this site is about). She is the post-Crisis incarnation of the original Kara/Supergirl from Argo and Superman's Kryptonian cousin. In a twist from the Silver Age Supergirl origin, Kara is actually older than Kal-El: she was a teenager when he was a baby. When Krypton exploded, she was sent in a rocket in suspended animation to find and look after Kal-El, the two being the sole survivors of the doomed planet. Since she finds Superman already a hero here on Earth, she sets down on Themyscira (previously known as Paradise Island) for a while to train with Wonder Woman and sort out her place in this world.
The first issue of the new SUPERGIRL series (August 2005) finds Kara acknowledging that she is not the first Supergirl to exist in this post-Crisis universe. Like most things in the current post-Crisis timeline, the same characters appear (eventually!) but certain events occur quite differently from the first time around. Read more about the new Kara on Wikipedia. The Comicbooks section lists Supergirl/Kara II's appearances (I'm calling her alternately Kara II and post-Crisis Kara/Supergirl on this site).
And yes, that really is the outfit they gave her. Can we please, please have an attractive, practical one-piece suit for a change?

Supergirl is one of the coolest young characters in the DC Universe. But she has been so different so many times that I get confused. But over all she's pretty freaking awesome. this is a cool thread. Super blonds are my favorites, that's why I married one.

:::Supergirl has taken on many incarnations through the years....with each different incarnation...it seems as if a new costume has emerged.....:::
Introducing: SUPERGIRL!
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/3038/intro9lt.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Supergirl's original costume was sewn for her by her mother, Alura, when she and her family were still residents of Argo, the Kryponian city which survived the destruction of Krypton by being thrown into outer-space when the planet exploded.
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/2827/sew0sq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
It is a one-piece, short, blue dress with a yellow belt, a red "S" emblem on the chest, and a red cape. The boots are a girl's version of Superman's and have low heels. Since the entire costume is made out of Kryptonian fabric, it is completely indestructible while under Earth's yellow sun.
Supergirl used this costume continuously in her super-adventures commencing with her arrival on Earth in 1959. It served her faithfully in her years at Midvale Orphanage and afterwards, when she was adopted by the Danvers family. As Supergirl, she wore it through high-school and continued using it until 1970, part-way through her years at college.

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3379/19751db.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Near the end of 1970, Supergirl stopped using her original costume. Throughout the early 1970s, readers would send in costume designs and suggestions, many of which Supergirl would wear in the pages of her comic-book. Sometimes she would try on one of these costumes for only a single panel, but sometimes she would try one out for a few issues.
She finally settled on a look consisting of a blue blouse with a small red "S" emblazoned on the upper-right, a short cape, red hotpants, and a decorated yellow belt. Initially, the shoes were very low with rolled tops, but in the mid 1970s she abandoned them in favor of her original Superman-style boots. Around that time, she also removed the fringe from her pants.
She continued to use this costume until 1983.

1983 saw the introduction of an all-new look for Supergirl. The new costume was originally designed by DC Comics with the upcoming Supergirl movie in mind and was intended to be useful for the movie production company. It featured the return of Super-Girl's original 1958 red miniskirt and the introduction of yellow piping on the boots.
In 1984, Supergirl made two further refinements to her look, the first being a change in hairstyle...
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/4903/band18bz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And the second being the addition of a headband.

Okay, this thead inspired me to read up on Supergirl because like I said she is a confusing character. Now that I read so much about her I know why I was so confused. There's tons of different Supergirls. I did enjoy reading about her though. I think I'm going to use Wikipedia to read up on more comic book characters. It has a lot of info and pictures. I didn't think they had so much on comic books.

Thanks for the info.
I've been buying the current Supergirl and hoping it would be better. I don't feel like I have gotten the full Super experience that I am getting from Action Comics, Superman and All Star Superman. The covers and solicits of the next three issues seem promising, so here's hoping.
I am not the Supergirl expert by a long shot. Does anythong think the cover to issue 10 is a return to the Linda Lee secret identity? I'd like that.
http://www.dccomics.com/comics/?cm=5922
I'd like it if they covered her up a bit more as well.
