Here's something interesting:

DC is holding onto the original art from all but the first issue to the series, to redo art. Or, in the words of the reputable art dealer, "Due to turnarounds associated with getting the individual issues out close to their original schedules, certain artistic choices were made in the interest of expediency that they are now choosing to fix as part of the Hardcover collection."

Things that make you go hmmmm...

Hopefully this means that the double page splash from issue #7 will get completely inked and colored now...

That would make the most sense to start with. But what needs doing in the other five issues? I didn't read the series, so I don't know much about it. . .

Huh. Interesting news indeed. I bet Spencer had to send that note to a ton of customers, as he's sold alot of those pages.

That is so wrong on so many levels. I mean, it's understandable to recolor Sandman after 20+ years, but to HOLD BACK on something recently published is another thing.

And Roach has another point too. I'd be PISSED if I shelled out boku bucks for a page to wait months for it.

Funny, that's exactly what I was thinking of, too. It wasn't bad, but it did look rushed. Either that, or they had a bunch of extra red ink they needed to use... better in the books than on the bottom line, I guess.

That recolored SANDMAN page looks so nice, I'm considering thinking about maybe purchasing the ABSOLUTE edition now.

Grrrr

Sad isn't it? Maybe I'll reread the first storyline (which I do own) to see if it strikes me any differently today than it did when I first read it years ago.

I hope so. That 1st trade is excellent. The Serial Killer story is amazing. And the "Midsummer Night's Dream" issue was one of my faves. I think it's 18 or 19.

You haven't read this series? That is surprising. I first started reading it during Season of Mists. Maybe you should try that.

I haven't read Sandman for a long time though, so I don't know what I'd think of it now either.

I tried it once a few years ago when Vertigo tried re-releasing the series in pamphlet form. That was after I had attempted to read a few issues c. #50 or so. Didn't do much for me. Bored me to tears, mostly. All the incessant mythology-referencing just ain't my thing, I suppose.

Yeah, maybe I'm fine with not ordering the book. =)

You know, I've been racking my brain for the last couple of days to try and think of anything else that needed fixing. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything.

I don't know if I'd recommend jumping in the middle of that series. I know you can do that with a LOT of books, but I wouldn't suggest it for this.

One of the reasons I think the 1st vol is the best way to start is because I think you get a little bit of everything in there. Some drama, some horror, some action, etc... and not only is it an intro to all you need but it is a story from beginning to end.

The art in #50 was P Craig Russell, I think. Killer. See, in the series it's not as much refrencing mythology as it is past events. It'd be like in ASM saying what happened in a previous issue. Another reson why you've gotta start at the beginning! :D But it's not for everyone, so I'm not get all preachy to someone who doesn't like it.

Sandman isn't my "end all be all" of comics, but I do think it is an incredible work at art.

The first volume is widely considered the be the worst of the Sandman books, so I wouldn't condem it. That said, Sandman pushes my tolerance for flowery poetic pompousness right to the limit so I easily see it not being for everyone

Sandman still holds up well - I just re-read them because my wife wanted to. It's still the best example of real literature in comic form for my money. The Corinthian story still freaks me out, and the early issues I thought did a phenomenal job of establishing the characters.

That, and despite all the excellent one-liners John Constantine had in Swamp Thing, the one interaction of his I've always enjoyed is after he helps Morpheus and asks for a favour (paraphrasing) "...had this nasty business a few years back and have never slept right since...can you do anything about that?" And when Morpheus agrees, John lights up and walks away singing "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream..." That was awesome.

I do agree that the first volume is the weakest of the lot though - but that's only because the rest of it was so phenomenal.
