View Full Version : Guess the Classic Cover Memories

By my estimates, this is 1,000th cover since Day One - back in September, 2003. Can you believe it?
Actually, I'm not 100% sure that it was in September - anyone remember when it was? I remember the first cover and who guess it right (after about 5 seconds!).
Who would have ever thought that we'd get to 1,000 covers?
Time flies when you are having fun. We are having fun aren't we?
I don't recall the first one, but I do remember the second or third was an Adventure cover by Aparo featuring the Spectre.
And I think the first Neal Adams cover you used was an X-Men issue and Sir Tim solved it.
Which is why I stick an extra needle in my Sir Tim doll every night.:D

I remember *ignoring* this contest for months! I don't know why I finally jumped onboard, but I'm glad I did. And to think I could have been off to a great start by catching that early Aparo Spectre cover---which I *would* have!

I think I've scored on around 1% of the 1000 Classic Covers. I've gotten three in the past few weeks. I really thrived in the Red Oak Kid era, getting at least when he was pinch-hitting. (Thanks, ROK! :D ) But I think I only scored on a few in the whole history of the game before that point.

100th cover, congrats to LR and everyone who's ever got them for making this the most entertaining contest on the web, imho anyway.
I have no idea what it IS, mind

By the way, I'm glad people are still having fun with the game.
My extended thanks to ROK and InfoBroker for their wonderful contributions.
Through a board meltdown and some technological changes, I am quite surprised that we are still going strong.
What surprises me most, is that I don't think I've ever repeated a cover, which is fairly likely because I didn't really keep track of the first 400 covers.
I think you're right Mac, that was Adventure #431, the Aparo gun was recognized. I am certain that you would have spotted it Michael.
Was that Sir Tim, or Cei-U!?
I only ask because Kurt seemed to solve so many back then
I am drifting my own thread - perhaps we need a Memories of the GTCC thread.

Was it Cei-U who solved an early one by saying "Having recognized the Black Terror's leg"?
You haven't repeated any covers, but you have used every Atom cover in existance.

That was Cei-U! It was the cover for Exciting Comics #51. http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=5302&zoom=4
Although I have used my fair share of Atom covers, I still have a few up my sleeve.
Come to think of it - I don't think I've used one in a while...
Thanks for the suggestion, Mac.

Sir Tim - maybe we shoud carve out some of this discussion into a separate thread. What do you think?

My favorite memory has to be InfoBroker's reaction to missing Daredevil #5. We were all struggling with this Wally-Wood-drawn cover. We were tossing out comments like crazy. At one point LR revealed part of a blurb. "Is that word MATADOR?" I wondered. Red Oak Kid shoots back with, "Daredevil #5."
A classic '60s Marvel comic and InfoBroker missed it completely. We razzed him for days after that. (You're a good sport, JB.)

I certainly thought he'd throw in the 'red' towel after that one.:p
To this day, whenever JB is reminded of the missed opportunity, he strikes the same pose as DD on that cover.
Speaking as someone who doesn't participate in the contest, I just wanted to say that I do enjoy following the thread. I may not know anything about them, but the majority of those classic covers are just awesome.

I don't remember when it was either - but I certainly remember the first cover & who got it right (though there was a bit of fudging of the rules on that first answer, as I recall)....

Bill was indeed our first winner, IDing the 'Demon in a Bottle' cover from Iron Man #128.
I think you're right Bill - I don't believe you got the issue number, but your answer was something like 'The Tony Stark alcoholism cover'. That was certainly close enough for our first cover.

Let me interrupt this thread to introduce you to the little guy who has taken up most of my free time over the past 6 months, and made it increasingly more difficult to sit at my computer scanning covers for hours at a time.
Even though it seems to take me a week to read a comic book these days, I am a pretty proud Dad.
I posted these over at the Comm board, but I thought some of my pals here might like to see them:
1. With Kat and the farm over the Easter weekend.
2. Hanging out with his paparazzi Dad in late April
3. Posing on his 6th month birthday last week.
4. Another 6th month pic.
We now return you to your regular programming.

Remember when we had to (or so I assumed) provide dates for the covers? Maybe that was never in the rules--I don't think I ever actually read the rules pre-meltdown--but I remember making a point of doing so, as did the other participants.
I remember some apparently impossible ones that got solved early, like a Miller Daredevil that was just a block of yellow. I remember the frustration of deducing the letters from a clipped logo that I didn't recognize, and poring through Milehigh's list of comics with the letters "NG" in the title, but ultimately failing to find Marvel's Treasury Edition of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu (those one-shot logos are killers!). There was the brutally deceptive Twilight Zone cover with a line-drawn space alien that misled everyone. A Charlton with a distinctive story title on the cover--pretty much the only thing visible in the clue--that I was able to google and find a copy on sale somewhere, thus pulling off what seemed to be a remarkable one-clue win. Then there was the time I successfully decoded LR's subtle remark that a particular issue "was published by the Big Two" leading me to a Marvel/DC co-production. Too many Aparo covers I missed, even when I knew they were Jim's work. And best of all, finding the most disturbing cover I've ever seen while searching--alas, I finally found out what was behind the cover and the payoff didn't do it justice...

Out of curiousity, what was that disturbing cover?

Yup - that was never in the rules. I think some people just added it as a detail.
I A Charlton with a distinctive story title on the cover--pretty much the only thing visible in the clue--that I was able to google and find a copy on sale somewhere, thus pulling off what seemed to be a remarkable one-clue win
I pretty much stopped those clues when I realized you could search by story title on GCD.
Then there was the time I successfully decoded LR's subtle remark that a particular issue "was published by the Big Two" leading me to a Marvel/DC co-production.
That was pretty much my favourite sneaky, yet extremely helpful clue ever.

What cover was that?

Logan is adorable, LR.
Thanks Josh. The 3rd picture was taken right after I told him that all of my comic books would be his some day. (kidding!)
And keep plugging away at the game - you'll solve on of them eventually.

I remember when one of the clues was "This comic was not published by one of the Big Two," and I replied and said something like, "Well, this clue is useless-- it could have been published by the other of the Big Two." And Scott told me I would make a good lawyer.
That would be this one right here. (http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=237959&zoom=4)
It's probably better that we don't know what the man is looking at, because whatever it is, it's bound to be disappointing.

Actually, the most disturbing thing about that cover is the doorknob's in the middle of the door.

I remember one time in the early days of the game, LR posted the cover, instead the clue.
But it was some lame 90s comic that nobody cared about.

I've seen doors with the knob in the middle - though in homes which looked much older than the one on that cover...

Hey, weren't you the one who thought posting 90s covers was a good way of attracting a younger audience?:D

That's true.
But then I realized I have absolutely no shot at solving any of the new ones.
Now I think we are in danger of losing our older players so you should really concentrate on using covers published before 1975. Especially the ones drawn by Neal Adams.

Neal who???

Neal who???
Which leads to an observation that may or may not be at all interesting: Are there any other "Neals" who've had any substantial comic book art published? I can't think of any. And what other (American) comic book artists can be identified by their first names? Off the top of my head, and subject to argument:
Herb
Carmine
Alden
Wally
Butch
Basil
Sergio
Mort
Gene
...not quite fair to count the somewhat rarer females, like:
Ramona
Marie
Wendy
Colleen
Jill
