Both terrible places to start, really. Red Son is an Elseworlds story (a story that takes established characters and imagines them in different contexts) about what would have happened if baby Kal-El had landed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas. It's brilliant and a fun read, but it's not an introduction to Superman. World Without a Superman is literally that - without Superman - as it's the follow-up to the Death of Superman story. Even if it had Superman in it, it's still bogged down with bits of early 90's DC continuity that have almost no relation to anything before or after.

I would probably start with Superman For All Seasons, Man of Steel Vol. 1, Birthright, and Showcase for a good understanding of the character and where he's been. Are there good Bronze Age TPBs I'm missing? I feel like there's a gaping hole between wacky 60's sci-fi Superman and 80's Byrne Superman (which always feels a little cynical to me). The Julie Schwartz/Cary Bates/Elliot Maggin/Curt Swan/Garcia-Lopez Superman is the Superman that feels the most iconic to me. As far as I can tell, it's the most direct source for the Reeve/Donner/Singer/Routh Superman.

World without a Superman is the 2nd part of a trilogy so I wouldn't get that unless you want to get The Death of Superman and The Return of Superman. TBH though, The Return of Superman is the only good chapter in that story.

Red Son on the other hand is fantastic. If you've got any basic knowledge of Superman at all (ie - who Lex Luthor is) then you should do fine. I highly recommend this book. This is an alternate version of Superman, but really that's for the best. His in-continuity stories tend not to be that great

No, they're all either mini series or single issues that are easily readable. Not just a good place to get started, they also give a Superman fan some decent stuff to keep.

Action 800 and a couple legends of the dcu are also good.
Red Son kicked ass.
The in continuity Superman is generally cool, but has been going since mid-80's (or late thirties if u wanna go ALL the way back), so any point u start at will be like coming in in the middle of a soap opera. Just buy whatever looks good, you'll get the idea of what you need to pick up as you go.

Death of, World Without, and Return of Superman are all trade collections of the Superman titles that were running at the time in 1992-93. The story was spread across the four regular Superman titles running in those days, so you'll notice that the art is different in different sections (four series with four different artists). Those books are all available on Amazon.

For a new reader, the Death of Superman arc has little to no noticeable impact on Infinite Crisis, except for a few passing references here and there. I would recommend reading them first, if for no other reason than to keep your continuity straight.

I'll also recommend that you read Superman: Sacrifice before you start in on Infinite Crisis. It's a great lead-in to several of the story's central themes and is a solid Superman story in of itself. By the time you've tackled all of this, you will have gained enough exposure to choose the next move. Maybe you liked some of the elements of the Death arc and want to pursue some of the subsequent stories (I won't say which, I'll let you determine that). Or maybe you find some things about current canon that you like and branch off in another direction. The possibilities are endless, and as long as you enjoy them, no choice is a bad one.

I gotta say you need to pick up Superman for all seasons, I mean the art isn't the most awesome looking, but for some reason i enjoyed its campy look :D

but the rest of the tbs that people advised on getting are also great, but for the little kid in you, pick up Superman for all seasons

Ar you kidding? The art is the best thing about A Superman for all Seasons. Tim Sale is one of the best artists in the business. The story was passable, but the art was fantastic

Look i'm not downing the art, I enjoyed it very much. Its just that people tend to like only certain kinds of artistist styles, For example my best freind could not sit and read Earth-X because he said the art was ugly?? Me everytime i read that book the art in it reveals new things ,and i love it more and more. and its beautiful.

Another example is The New Frontier, I would say it has more of a classic, cartoony feel to it, But i' loved the art in that book. My comment wasn't aimed at people who are open to to different styles, but to people who only enjoy alot of what is considered to be a mainstream look.

I say campy, and they might identifiy with that ,expect that and not complain within the first 5 pages! They might have a more open mind ,If they don't expect the art to be what THEY expect as Awesome.

get it?;)

I get it but I'm not sure I agree. I know there will always be a huge chunk of the market who will only love the Jim Lee's and Micheal Turners of the world, but Tim Sale is still a big name artist who sells a lot of copies on his own.
