Interesting. The artwork looks good. The back story is (unsurprisingly) different, though I'm slightly surprised that they changed the idea of the message Superman was given by his parents. In Smallville (which I consider most people will link the film to), Jor-El tells Kal-El that he shall rule these people etc, even though Clarks Smallville upbrining teaches him that's wrong. In these comics OTOH, it seems that Kent learns shaping mankinds destiny himself is wrong through his Kryptonian heritage. Interesting.

And if anyone wants to start a Ma Kent ongoing series letter-writing campaign, go to "Ask the Editors" at dccomics.com.
So get writing!!!

That is again similiar to what Jor-El taught him in the first movie. He must not interfere with Human history. They have to forge their own destiny and what not.
That is one of the things I do NOT like about Smallville. Apparently the name Kal-EL means Evil, and We're all in trouble when he calls himself that

My pet Smallville theory, is that we've not heard the voice of Jor-el on the show. The guy who's been talking, is [B]Zod[B], and no one else! That's why the horrible un-Jor-el manipulations, and the horrible events. Plus, look at the things he's done to the Kents - giving them a child, then taking it away, and ultimately killing Jonathan. All things that when the truth is revealed, will make him unforgiveable in Clark's eyes.

I like that idea, but I don't see it as un-Jor-el. Post Crisis Jor-El and by extension ALL kryptonians were cold and heartless.

Not really. Jor-El was different than the other Kryptonians in the Old Universe continuity. He loved Lara, for one thing, which was forbidden among Kryptonians. He was more like the Kryptonians of old than the ones at the time of the planet's death. You can see even more of this in the Starman series.
But this is all moot since the Old Universe Krypton is gone. Nearly all interpretations of Jor-El show him as a heroic figure that goes against the grain to save his son. I find that portraying either the Els or the Kents (apparently Martha will be turning to the dark side soon in Smallville) as evil or bad is just plain wrong. Luckily that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

I'm glad that these comics are going to spend more time on Lara and Martha, too. Except for rare cases (like Birthright) they aren't really shown as having as much of an impact on Superman as his male parents.

And, in the last season final, the beam that made Lex Zod came for the Fortress of Solitude.

In MOS it was implied that Jor-Els ghost/image tried to turn Full Kryptonian, but Kal fought him. I don't remember the details, its ben a long time since I read it, but I thought they were saying that would have been a BAD thing.
(Kind of like Smallville)

I believe that was debunked in the World of Krypton miniseries. I think Kal misunderstood what the image was trying to do--but maybe I'm wrong. In any case, the Man of Steel version of Superman never had any ill-will toward his birth father. Not that any of this is really that important now.

Anyway, these prequel comics sound pretty cool. I'm much more interested in this now that this is an actual mini-series and not a collection of one-shots. Too bad the preview pages of the Krypton issue looking boring as heck (nice art, though).

I'll wait for your reviews on this one, but dude... Marlon Brando as a comic character? That kinda makes you have to buy this.

I've never read it either. I'm just repeating what I've heard about the series. Obviously I could be wrong about this.
How is it that Bryan Singer, Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray are all credited with writing "Return to Krypton" and Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, Robert Benton and Tom Mankiewicz aren't? The entire issue is basically a recap of the first 20 minutes of Superman: The Movie.

It was a nice little retailing of the origin of superman, Bot the best, but still pretty good. Just wondering what your thoughts where.

The art was gorgeous, but the script was little more than a rehash of the first twenty minutes of the Donner film, with some pretty bad dialogue crammed between lines taken straight from Brando's monologues.

I thought the first issue was fantastic. True, it was a rehash, but that's what I expected it to be. I've always wanted to see more of the Donner Krypton and learn abouts its history--the issue didn't disappoint. I'm hoping that the Lex Luthor and Ma Kent issues are as good.
