I'd like to predict (via my "fan"-tastic prescience) that Mike will receive Best Writer for sure. His writing is incredibly tight, absolutely striking on all levels, and quite well received by fans and professionals alike- it seems.
As to why not Best Cover Artist; the funny thing is, there are so many absolutely incredibly talented artists doing covers these days, that it's almost a take your pick mentality as to favorites. Thankfully the comic book industry is going through a wonderful period currently where the level of creators working in this medium are like a who's who of the best and brightest that the illustration field in general has to offer. I for one couldn't be happier! Is Mike considered in that higher echelon of talent? Absolutely and completely! However, I think the industry will award best cover artist to someone else this year. Just a feeling I have.

Wow, thats crazy that Mike's getting nominated for writter. I see Bendis, suprised no Whedon though.
And I'd like to think He'll win for best cover artist. That Islang piece is just perfect. Honestly

I was disappointed to not see Dave Stewart nominated for Best Colorist this year. That guy deserves every accolade this industry has to offer!! :D

Dave Stewart has won this and other awards over the years. The real
testament to his talent is that he is working more now, with so many
different artists on so many different projects.
Much as I like Mignola's writing, Bendis and Brubaker had tuffer jobs
making Avengers and Captain America interesting.
Whedon? Not really an industry guy. What he does on X-Men is more
stunt-writing. Not that I don't enjoy it. Before Joss took over I hadn't
read X-Men in years.

Well I would think this distinction alone would take Joss out of the "stunt writing" category and make him a much more prominent choice for top honors. After all, it's not an easy job to reinvigorate a 50+ year old franchise and make it applicable and interesting for today's audiences.

Joss, just like other writers who work in TV and Movies, may be up for
fan awards, but the Harveys are given out by professionals from the
industry. So the folks they may nominate would have "earned-their-spurs"
so to speak.
