Having been buying the Essentials as of late, I noticed the visionaries series at a pretty good price for some volumes. Although not having as much content they are in color,so I was wondering if there are any voumes of this series you would recomend. I have my eye on the 3 volumes of the hulk visionaries:Peter David, any other worthy ones?

Walt Simonson's run on Thor has been collected as, I think, two Visionaries TPBs, but I was actually able to get the original issues of the entire run on Ebay for cheaper than the trades.

i like the steranko volume a lot, though iirc much whining & crying has been expended over the reproduction (particularly, i think, the coloring). may've been the "scorpio" nick fury volume instead that provoked the outcry, though.

in any event, neither book bothered me on that account. i must be quite the philistine.

Hulk Visionaires - Peter David 1-3
Thor Visionaires - Walt Simonson - 1-3
Fantastic Four Visionaires - John Byrne 1-4
Daredevil Visionaries - Frank Miller 1-3
X-Men Visionaries - Neil Adams 1

I can not recomend the Hulk, Thor, and Fantastic Four one enough. Those are some of the all time greatest runs of those book. The David Hulk run is too good not to get. The Simonson Thor run is probably the best the title ever was. The Byrne FF run is second only to the Lee/Kirby run as being the greatest that title ever saw.

The 5th Byrne Fantastic Four Visionaries is out now.

The holy trinity of Byrne, Miller, and Simonson on those books is a must for any comic fan.

I'm really interested in the HULK and DAREDEVIL volumes. The THOR's would be nice to, but I think 2 and 3 are really hard to come by, and as has been mentioned you can get the run in back issues cheaper (or at least about the same).

Oooh... I just picked up a set of the original Scorpio run on e-bay. They still look pretty darn good.

I'll second the Miller Daredevil series, particularly volume 2, as it's the only one I own. It covers the Gang War and Elektra Saga, which makes for a pretty tightly plotted, satisfying read. If not for the subplot with the Punisher in the last issue collected, it would be self contained. The Adams' X-Men one is interesting. I was really fond of the coloring, in particular, and they're fun stories. Last time I looked, its out of print, but I got a copy pretty easily off of E-Bay. The oversized hardcovers focusing on specific creators are pretty good, too, if only as samplers of the creators entire careers at Marvel and ways to read rarities (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's first work for Marvel, say, or a Lee Spider-Man back up from the '90s). I won the second Kirby volume not too long ago off E-Bay, and I'm planning on getting the Romita volumes (one for Sr. and one for Jr.) at some point.

Daredevil Visionaries Vol. 1 collects the issues that Miller drew before he took over writing duty. Probably not as essential as the following volumes but some nice early Frank Miller art.

I have X-Men Neal Adams, FF Byrne vol. 1, and Daredevil Miller vol. 1. I think the Adams and Byrne volumes are pretty good (I also have a number of later Byrne FF issues as individual comics, and I like a lot of those.) But I don't think the Miller volume is that great. I'm hoping it gets significantly better when Miller becomes the writer with volume 2. I wouldn't doubt it, because I have the Born Again TPB reprinting Miller's second writing stint, and that one's really great work.

I've got my eye on the PAD Hulk Visionaries. I didn't start reading the monthly until Dale Keown assumed art duties. Always wanted to go back and read the start of the run and all the Grey Hulk issues but those McFarlane back issues were $$$ in the 90's. Now I can read for cheap! yay!
