So Hulk its vs Surfer!
Surfer gets a quick explanation of why he is on there, he saw a portal, it called to him, he fell into it and woke up in chains with a control disk implanted in him.
Jump to Hulk & Gang going to fight amidst the cheers of throngs of fans.
Of course the next opponent is Surfer or the Silver Savage as they call him.
Great pin up of Surfer smashing Hulk. Surfer beat on them until Hulk comes up with an idea and they manage to smash the control disk. While SS thanks Hulk, Hulk beats the holy hell outta him.
So after winning three battles they ask for there freedom. They are told to kill some prisoners who are enemies of the emperor. Hulk get's threatened to comply because of the obedience disks. More talking happens giving some back story to Shadow Warrior guy. The guards get ticked and start using the disks, until suddenly they stop working....it looks like Surfer has disabled them...all of them. Hulk and the gang then tear the mother down so to speak and the arena is destroyed. Surfer offers to take Hulk home, but Hulk wants to stay. More talk of the prophecy of a Sakaarson who is to come and save them and other talk of a Worldbreaker is is to come an destroy. Surfer flies away, they say farewell and thus ends the first part.
Thoughts: I thought this ended a bit quickly, but I enjoyed it a bunch. Surfer freeing everyone seems to be a bit deus ex machinay but then again Surfer doing that is part of his character description. I'm starting to get attached the the various members of Hulk's posses, and I can't wait to see what happens next. I liked the reference to the 1st time surfer and Hulk met up and Hulk wanting to go to another planet - nice touch. Freeing Hulk from stories on earth has been quite refreshing.
The art is high quality throughout, lets hope it keeps up the momentum.
I cannot wait until the next part Anarchy starts up.

this was an awesome issue.
just read this and i enoyed it greatly.
everyone working on this book is doing such an awesome job and i am greatly looking forward to this book every month. this storyline doesn't end till april next year and i'm not at all pissed off like i usually am that i'm going to have to wait a whole year just to read one story. at the end of the first arc of the storyline i must say that it looks like it's going to be a satisfying read the whole way through.
loved the surfer cameo.
pak, pagulayan and the whole gang behind this book rock.

In terms of my Surfer fix (no Annihilation this week), this issue hit the spot. A little bit of angst, a little bit of deus ex machina, a whole lot of awesome.
On its own, Hulk-related terms . . . equally awesome if not moreso. Smashing, a steadily improving supporting cast, more smashing, and so on and so forth. Loved the little bit of Hulkish introspection at the end with Surfer. And the "you're just like all the others!" bit during the first arena bout.
All in all, I'm really enjoying this storyline.

This issue was symbolic of Hulk's coolness for me. I took a withdrawl from comics around January, and right after my last exam today, I went to the comic store and finally bought some comics again. It was the first anniversary of my comic collecting. The only reason why I got into comics was because of the Hulk; the game came out approximately a year ago and I decided to just buy a Hulk comic cause the character just seemed cool.
Anyways, I feel lucky, or oddly encountering coincidences. The first Hulk issue I got was 82, I think, a one-shot of Hulk in London. Hulk gives me faith in comics, even after wasting money on HoM or just bad issues in general.
The artist of this current line draws a mean Surfer.

Is there a reason why the Surfer (who is hard to contact and I assume knew nothing about the illuminatis plan) didn't give his Teammate and Fellow Defender a ride Home?
SOunds like he just left him on battleworld

Yeah, didn't he say in the first issue of the arc that none of the Earths's super-powered beings or machines would save them? Has he forgotten their betrayal so soon? Dammit, I wanna see Hulk kick some hero ass!
btw, haven't read the issue yet, but as I thumbed through it, it looks like Hulk kicked the holy crap out of Surfer! If it was someone other than Surfer, I would applaud, but in every other Hulk/Surfer meeting, Surfer's able to beat/discard Hulk with a flick of his wrist. Now he's getting pounded on to the point of seeming unconciousness.
WHAT HAPPENED TO SURFER?!? Was he somehow depowered when he arrived on the planet? It's a little upsetting because a) I love the Surfer and b) I know it's a Hulk book, but C'MON! Make it FAIR!

Yes, Surfer was depowered when he went through the gate that took him to the planet (Hulk was depowered too, but it looks like he's slowly getting stronger).

It's worth noting that in addition to being depowered by his trip through the portal, Surfer was shackled by the slave gadget. As soon as that got broken and he shook of Hulk's beating, he seemed closer to his normal self.
As for Hulk not wanting to go back . . . eh, I took it at face value. Hulk's pissed at Earth's heroes, but Planet Hulk seems like a decent place. He's got pals, he's got plenty of opportunities to smash things, and there're no puny humans around. He'll get back to Earth and get his payback eventually, but he's not ready to leave just yet.

I loved the homage to/awareness of their first meeting, back in Tales to Astonish 92-93 (two of my favorite comics). The Hulk says, back then I just wanted you to take me to another world, so I could be free of the puny humans hounding me. The Surfer says, I can do that now. Hulk: "Don't you get it? I'm finally here."
Great stuff.

Oh man Agrich, you're totally right!!! Just seeing that made me wish I had been buying Planet Hulk. Actually... I could afford it since I'm not buying into 52...
I think Revenge of the Hulk is next year's Civil War/House of M. Really appreciate how theyre setting it up with a long start, ala Infinite crisis.
And the Surfer fits in there with the "No earthly heroes would save me." Well, if Cap or some of the "warm hearted" heroes knew what happened...
Which they will go apeshit on the Illuminati members when Hulk comes back for revenge...
And Surfer's the herald of the Hulk now...

Planet Hulk is great. I used to dismiss the Hulk as some guy who smashes stuff, but the idea of the Illuminati banishing him sounded good so I grabbed the issues. So glad I did. The art is great, and I love the supporting cast.
Best line this ish: HULK "We tear this mother down!"

Those things made it one of the most physically impressive showings for the Surfer I can remember him having in a while, deprived of using the Power Cosmic, weakened by the portal, and he still physically DOMINATES Hulk and his entire team.

I was going to recommend getting the back issues online, but they're going for about $17.50 per issue!!

I'd recommend getting the Giant-Size Hulk special in June and the Planet Hulk: Gladiator Guidebook in July. They should give you all the info you need to jump in with Part 1 of Anarchy in July. I don't think they're collecting the Exile arc until after the entire 14-part Planet Hulk storyline is finished.

You can pick them up on ebay for considerably cheaper. Don't put any stock in Mile High's back issue prices; they have no basis in reality.

I was thinking the same thing. The Hulk unifies the peoples of the planet, and heads back to earth with them as his soldiers. That would be some fight, and could be next summers big storyline. Anyway, this honestly is one of the best books I'm reading right now, and can't wait for the 2nd arc to kick off.

I think it's more that Hulk feels a sense of responsibility toward the oppressed people of that planet, which is why he's going to lead and protect them, and eventually take his shot at the Empire.

I think it's more that he's happy where he is. He doesn't seem driven by revenge. We all know he'll get back to Earth eventually, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's in no rush.

Do you guys think he will slip back into Banner mode at all, possibly at a very inopportune time like the middle of a giant battle? I dont know too much about the Hulk but he's been mean and green for several issues now.

If it's still anger based, he should NEVER slip into banner in a fight. Of course he has to sleep sometime when things are calmed down. Nothing stopping a knife in the back then ;)

Banner is showing up in the annual. We'll find out then.Depending on how much memory he's sharing with Banner these days, this could be pretty jarring.
The last time we saw Banner he was on that rogue SHIELD satellite and he wakes up to find himself on an alien world on the run from a power-mad emperor.

I'm sure Banner has had some pretty jarring experiences after un-Hulking out in the past. Although this could be one of the weirdest.

Heh heh. That definitely was classic. I really, really, really loved irony in that whole series. Hulk is usually the one to ruin Banner's life, especially once Banner gets a good thing going. Banner shows up (after having been gone for months) to ruin Hulk's good life.
This current arc is definitely awesome. I'm glad to see Hulk finally re-getting his due (in terms of both story AND comic fan recognition).

For a long time I didnt like the Hulk, he was Marvel Comic's Scooby Doo. Every time somebody managess to piss of the Banner, Hulk comes out and saves the day, then Banner returns and keeps running. every issue. Then it got stupid in the 80's with Byrne and the hulkbusters and the Rick Hulk.
But Peter David made the series smart for a looooooong time. Then it went back to crap writers. Now Hulk has a good story....
I was just reading Future Imperfect, and I think the whole Planet Hulk thing( a prelude to the event of next year) is based on this book. There's vague mentions of a war(Civil War?) and that the Hulk gets pissed and takes over. Gee whats going on now...?

What else can be said? Awesome story that acknowledges past continuity while creating an incredibly well crafted Hulk story.
Silver Surfer vs Hulk turned out the way I'd imagined and the way Surfer was captured and used made sense (boy that tech must be really advanced).

This Planet Hulk story arc is awesome! I just wonder about the Strengh level of Hulk after being weakened. Id say in the class 50 ton range at the start of the story and nearing class 75 tons at the end of exile. I thought the battle vs Silver Surfer was done in a smart way that leaves readers wondering a bunch of what ifs. What if Hulk didn't have help? What if the Surfer didn't free the slaves? Anyway this is by far marvel's best work in years. I'm curious about your thoughts about the strength levels. LMK

My concen is how will the Marvel Heroes on Earth going to take it when the HULK returns next year ? :(
Especially the SHE-HULK since in an upcoming storyarc, she is keeping an eye on the HULK's villains while he is away.

The difference between Future Imperfect and this is that Hulk is not a megalomanical dictator who wishes to subjugate all before him and rule with supreme authority, whilst getting his kicks from seeing innocent people tortured and in pain.
In Planet Hulk, Hulk is at least willing to (reluctantly) help the repressed and even (reluctantly) work as a team. He enjoys being seen with respect, but not so much that he demands everyone's fealty.

Question: Since the Hulk in this arc seems to be intelligent enough-and apparently in control of himself-to work within a team, do you think Marvel is trying to set up Hulk joining the Avengers? I know a lot of fans wanted it in the past, but his rage made him risky at best, but now? Planet Hulk is supposed to mean big changes for the character, and to put him more in the spotlight... so you never know.
JuggernautRM
06-06-2006, 09:21 PM
If this is an intellegent hulk, than this is a hulk who can hold a mean grudge, and considering one of the main conspirators against him is on the Avengers, I don't see the possiblity of that happening. I like Hulk being a solo entity, he doesn't work in the team sense of the marvel universe, which usually acts like a counter terrorism unit.
The difference with this team here is, its for survival, and the team members are new to hulk, and hes grown onto them, so its a good relationship he has now.
