View Full Version : I can't sleep...

I hate it when I can't sleep. It makes me crankier than usual.

It's one of those nights where I just can't turn of my brain and I have to get up for work in four and a half hours. I tried playing a DVD with a boring commentary track, I couldn't pay attention to it because my mind kept wandering off on it's own little path.

So, what do you guys do when you can't sleep?

Cam63

I drink lot's of Coke and run around.

I think that would add to the problem of not being able to fall asleep.

Do you really want me to answer this question?:p:o
.......

All kidding aside exercise. If your body's exhausted you will go out. Also try treating the cause of your insomnia whether its stress or other factors. Not being able to sleep sucks and I wish you the best of luck with it.

You're probably (hopefully!) asleep by now but I would have suggested 'accidentally' waking Monkey up. If you have to be awake at least you can have company.

Seriously though, I have that problem too. What I do is I don't let my mind think. It sounds weird but just put all thoughts out of your head and as soon as one starts to pop in, try to stop the train. I've found that it doesn't matter how exhausted my body is, if my mind is 'amusing itself' I won't get to sleep.

Hopefully tonight will be better! Don't take a nap today either if you can help it.

I totally feel for you. You do have to find that fine balance (if you are using the tv) to watch something that isn't too boring (or your mind will wander), and something that isn't too interesting (or you will stay up to watch the end since you are up anyway).

I usually watch a movie I've seen a bunch of times (but still enjoy). That way I know what happens, but am not too bored with it to let my mind wander.

Good Luck!

I turn on a fan. The white noise puts me right out. Sometimes I'll turn on the radio. If you have a station that carries National Public Radio, I've found the music they play at night is great for falling asleep to. Turn the radio and the fan on and it'll totally knock you out.

Also, I stopped drinking any caffine after noon, and that has helped too.

Now I lay me down not to sleep
I just get tangled in the sheets
I swim in sweat three inches deep
I just lay back and claim defeat

Chapter read and lesson learned
I turned the lights off while she burned
So while she's three hundred degrees
I throw the sheets off and I freeze

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Who needs sleep?
(well you're never gonna get it)
Who needs sleep?
(tell me what's that for)
Who needs sleep?
(be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War)

My hands are locked up tight in fists
My mind is racing filled with lists
of things to do and things I've done
Another sleepless night's begun

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Who needs sleep?
(well you're never gonna get it)
Who needs sleep?
(tell me what's that for)
Who needs sleep?
(be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War)

Who needs sleep?
(well you're never gonna get it)
Who needs sleep?
(tell me what's that for)
Who needs sleep?
(be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War)

There's so much joy in life,
so many pleasures all around
But the pleasure of insomnia
is one I've never found
With all life has to offer,
There's so much to be enjoyed
But the pleasures of insomnia
are ones I can't avoid

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Hala Hala Hala...

Who needs sleep?
(well you're never gonna get it)
Who needs sleep?
(tell me what's that for)
Who needs sleep?
(be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War)

I got precisely 3 1/2 hours of sleep before I had to get up and go to work. I've been a walking zombie all day.

I don't expect I'll get much sleep tonight, either because the same things that kept me awake last night have been on my mind all day today. I may just take a Benedryl around 7 and hope that puts me out. I'll be groggy in the am, but at least I'll have gotten some sleep.

Those are the worst because when you first snap awake you're still disoriented and you still believe it. Then you have to dwell on it before you can get back to sleep.

So, what do you guys do when you can't sleep?

Chronic insominiac here.

Play Sims 2. My main character in the neighborhood I usually play currently has 34 girlfriends in love with her, eleven of whom are living in the same house, including her own wife and five other joined female couples, all of which have both members of the couple in love with my main character.

Read: Especially comics, but really, anything.

Write: Short stories and the text to chldren's picture books, complete with stick figure drawings and detailed descriptions of what the pictures should look like. I've been told by those who actually do this for a living that the descriptions and sketches are unnecessary. If one were chosen to be published, as an unknown author, I'd have no say whatsoever over the choice of artist or the appearance of the pictures. It helps me to get an idea of where the story is going, though, so I do it anyway.

Cruise the web.

Roam door to door in the dead of night leaving flyers exhorting people to join a non-existent religion.

Bake. My students love it when I've had a severe bout of insomnia, because they get oatmeal raisn cookies or lemon-lime muffins (lime muffins with bits of lemon or vice versa) or cupcakes with strawberry chunks, or a slice of homemade bread.

Play MOM or the original X-Com, my favorite strategy games of all time.

I found a cure for insomnia, but you need a strong heart for it.

I'll post it tomorrow, which will be today in Australia.

...and our dunny water goes 'round the other way, too.

I had a nightmare a few months ago where my friend was telling me that he had an incurable disease and was dying. I kept asking him if there was a cure or he could get a second opinion, and he kept saying no. Then I would ask him the same question in a different way hoping for a different answer and he would say no. "I'm dying and there is nothing we can do about it, really. There is nothing left."

WHen I woke up I really could not tell if that conversation was a dream or a memory. I had to call my best friend to make sure he is was ok.

I have both kinds of sleep apnea & must sleep on a respirator---yeah, you oughta see the rig---if you get turned on by TIE Fighter Pilots I'm your sexy beast. Getting to sleep has been a longtime touble for me so believe me, I'm with you. I get a good night's full deep sleep once a week, maybe twice. Insomnia's a drag. Our new housemate is an insomniac who sleeps a few hours a day at most.

Oh and Gilda... XCOM rox. :) Was just showing our new housemate the original Gerry Anderson UFO TV series, to our mutual glee. Think SHADO = XCOM.
Glee!

Imagine you're armed with an M-203 and no fucker can get within 50 feet of you.

Oddly enough, I illustrated the tech manual for the M203.
So just think of me being intimately familiar with grenade launchers and various weapons they attach to, and you'll all sleep better. Right?

On second thoughts, it's possibly a health hazard for some, so just try relaxation exercises before bed and maybe a glass of wine. :)

I NEVER hit people with the owl!

The owl hits people all on its own.

Think of me simply as 'a facilitator.'

Besides. Cheyenne is a very friendly owl as owls go.

And I am a very friendly person.

Harmless.

Really.

Believe me.

I couldn't sleep last night. It was probably a combination of still being upset about the gosling and worrying about making sure I wake up to get into work early.
