I wasn’t around during the "Weird Tales" era. But I was wondering why there hasn’t been more Weird Tales?
Did they loose their license on the "Weird Tales"?
It just seems like a good marketing idear to me. I also think they should do a Weird Tales that features only people from the forum. EH???? EH??? Like half you people are artists and the other half are writers.
Secondly. I don’t normally think of Hellboy stories, or BPRD stories. But randomly I am re reading Nature of the Beast, and I had a though. What if there was a story where HB starts to resent mankind, and starts to embrace what he truly is? He kinda does the good vs. evil thing in his head.
eh just a thought
They've never said officially. Maybe the comics didn't sell well. Or maybe it's because we're all whiny babies who said, "That's not Hellboy!" Weird Tales was a mixed bag for me. I loved Eric Powell's young Hellboy story and Jason Pearson's depiction of Liz. It was usually mostly enjoyable but plenty of the stories left me cold.
I think the point of the comics were to let other artists and writers take their shot at the Helliverse while Mike was away working on the movie. They were supposed to be different but people didn't want different.
Scott could have wielded an editorial mallet and made everyone write within Hellboy's world...like any editor at Marvel or DC does... but Hellboy is Mike's creation and only he tells real Hellboy stories. Being too close would confuse things.
New readers to Hellboy often expect the comic to be run like a regular comic title, coming out monthly. But that's not the animal we got and we likes this animal.

To my mind, the thing about Weird Tales was that it felt that most people didn't really get who the character was. Those that did ( Powell and Scott Morse are two that stand out after so long ) really got it, and their stories worked... whether they were in the Hellboy world or not. Those that didn't, and I gotta say that the majority of the stories DON'T stick in my head... missed the IDEA of the character so badly, that they felt like stories about other characters dressed in Hellboy costumes.
my $0.02.

That series was all about the COVER! It was almost like, "well...the art looks kind of cool, they won't care what comes out of these Monster's mouths." And just like a lot of you said, all those stories are a blur to me.

The Wieard Tales was the first HB comic I was buying in issues and as to my liking of it... I dropped it after the first 4 issues. That says it all. Hell Boy is all about the story not the character- he's just a great medium to present them. Without the mighty pen of mr. Mignola he's just another hulking, musclous hero.

You know Im picking up what you guys are laying down. But Alex Maleevs story blew me the eff away. Same with . . . that one kid that did the story in pencils. I cant think of it now. Where the chick turns into the monster. But I get it, the fanbase wasnt really there.
Thanks

I have to agree, there were one or two stories in the series I liked, but I can't even tell you what they were. Everything was very forgettable and didn't really capture the characters. I'm close to dropping BPRD for the same reason. Even though it's plotted by Mike, John's writting has no pace and don't get me started on the art. On somethings you can accept no substitutions.

I can't remember when it happend with B.P.R.D; but now I just accept thats what the characters look like now. I think the real difference between books, "besides MM's art" is the coloring. I dig Davis's art, and I like what hes done with Roger. Also HB is about story, while B.P.R.D is about character, I think they work well together.

I agree with everything that Tad has hypothesized and stated here. The Weird Tales stuff was a complete mixed bag. Some great stuff (J. Pearson, Alex Maleev, Ovi's story, and a smattering of others), but for the most part I didn't feel the whole was worth the sum of it's parts.
Maybe this concept could be revamped a bit and brought back again someday. Perhaps the timing of Weird Tales was just a bit off. I wonder if it were released today if things would be any different. We may never know.

Depends on who you're talking to. For me, yeah that's probably TMI, but I've seen some pretty strange fan art, so maybe not so much for other people. :D

I also loved Weird Tales. But I'm the rare Mignola/Hellboy fan who likes to see different takes on these characters. These alternate Hellboys never take away from the original so I think it's all fun. I'd be all for another one of these...BPRD Weird Tales!!

I don't mind different takes on HB, my issue was more with the story. Or the lack there of (Weird Tales).

To be sure, Weird Tales was a mixed bag of good and bad story and art.
That said, I do like anthologies and would enjoy another go round. Certainly
sales is the driving force for keeping a comic on the stands. And, Weird Tales
was positioned to fill a gap during the making of the first movie. Right now,
with the BPRD book going strong and Mignola working on Hellboy stories with
other artists, a Weird Tales book could be too much for the market place.
Guess if someone sees Scott (Beloved Editor) Allie at SDCC they should
put the question to him. In fact go up to him with 3 other like minded fans.
Surround him. And don't let him slip away until you get a good answer.
Menacing looks would also help. (KIDDING):D
