View Full Version : Who in your opinion draws the BEST Wolverine of all-time?
Which artist or artists do you think draws the best Wolverine? Asking since he (with the exception of Spiderman) is the most used character.

I know this seems crazy, especially because I dont love his work as EIC... but I vote Joe Q. Honestly, his Wolverine covers are the best depiction I have ever seen. He draws him thick, and he keeps the "ears" on the mask short, Batman-style, which I think is the best look for it.

Jim Lee for my money. He's aged, grizzled, worn out, beatin up, small ...but one can conceivable see people sleeping with him. Ever other artist really seems to emphasize either a more hugh jackman pretty, or a more troll like kitty pryde fairy tale look
Old worn out bastard goes good on wolverine

Coipel's Wolvie is fun, as is McNiven's...I see every speck of stubble on the guy's face, and Coipel's expressions (and that slashy black line thing) are perfect for every single one of his characters.

Silvestri. His Logan is just one hair better than Lee`s, I think.

Byrne/Austen. They really defined him, and when they were illustrating him, he had not only the attitude, but a physicality that nobody else really captures. They also made him hairy as all get-out, and most people tend to cheat that.

I'm going to have to say it's a tie, imo. I love both of their renditions, but I can't decide whose I like most. Coming in third place would have to be Lienil Francis Yu, god, he was an ugly, rough bastard when he draws him.

I'm gonna say Jim Lee with Joe Q and Frank Miller coming in 2nd and 3rd.
I also really liked Dell Otto's versions during Secret War and on one of the Astonishing #1 Variants.
Have to disagree with Ramos. Don't like his style at all.

Leinil Yu draws the quintessential Wolverine/Logan. He's always short, hairy and ugly looking with an amazing amount of detail. Plus he always draws some really good claws.
Adam Kubert would be a VERY close second since he draws him with the perfect staunch look and feel.
Recently Olvier Coipel, Steve McNiven, Salvador Larroca and John Cassaday also drew a mean looking Wolverine.

Jim Lee at first, but by 1991 he was too muscular, when he should have been sick because of his crucifixion in Uncanny X-Men #251 and his healing factor not working as well as it used to.

Jim Lee circa '91/92, nothing beats it. Close second goes to Lienel Yu during his run just after issue 100 in the second series (I don't like him in the Ultimate Wolverine/Hulk as much as the older version). John Cassaday, short gruff and mean lookin, works great.

I can't find the images to post, but Bolton's Logan in the Classic X-Men backup stories are amazing (the ones reprinted in X-Men: Vignettes). My favorites are the first story in Classic X-Men #1 and the story in issue #4 where he dares Nightcrawler to go out in public.
The entirety of Classic #25 where he faces the hunter and the bear in the snow presents some of the most definitive Wolverine visuals. Just a great character piece. It's what I would show anyone who wanted to get a sense of who he is in the comics.

Robertson and Delotto just seem wrong. I'm not sure whom the first is drawing, the second seems to have done a "Baywatch" version.
I loved Paul Smith's work, as well as Barry Windsor-Smith. I wonder what Smith is up to these days? He was doing a book for Image (I think), that's IIRC now defunct. I've got to check imdb, and see if he's gone back to animation?

Bonusball 75, I think what's most amazing, is that the covers you've got there, show three different guys who don't look like each other, and they don't look ANYTHING like Wolverine!
The first, if it weren't for the claws, I'd have no idea who it's supposed to be.
The second is the closest, but the cover reminds me of a 60's Pennydreadful cover.
The third looks like a Gacy clown!

Good to know. I respect the guy even more now for what very clearly looks to me like an attempt to integrate a bit of Darick's style into his own for the cover of #2. It's an interesting way to try to make things flow between the drastically different art styles on the cover and within.

I'm pretty much in favour of anyone who still draws him with the long sharp claws, as opposed to the Miller-style flat blades with the angled ends. They fit, artistically, in the Wolverine mini-series, when he was going to marry Mariko, but I've always hated that representation. I'm sticking with Byrne/Austen!

I really enjoyed Art Adam's depictions of all of the Aussie-era X-Men (his Longshot is one of the few versions of the character aside from Jim Lee's that doesn't look like a rail-thin geek). His Wolverine is my favorite of the character (followed by John Cassidy's version): tough, gruff, and feral looking--but at the same time not ugly and/or ancient looking.
