Hello.
I am Alex's oldest son Eric. I meant to be the one to let everyone know that my father did pass away this morning drawing/writing at his table. I do not have any further details other than I will forward an address for those interested in sending cards. We will arrange something appropriate at or around the convention this summer in San Diego. As John shared, all of your cards and letters of the recent past were very much appreciated by my father. Only in these last years did he begin to understand and accept the fact that his work had touched so many people's lives. In time, more information will follow.

Thank you.
Eric and family.

Damn, first Will, now Alex. Are there any master cartoonists left?

Hmm. I don't recall ever hearing of him, but I've heard of his shows. He died working on a project. At least that's something.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am better at remembering the names of characters than creators. What comics did he work on?

When I was a kid I loved the herculoids. :(

I really give my condolences to the Toth family. The comics and animation industry have truly lost a legend and pioneer of smooth design. His Hanna-Barbera work for Space Ghost, Superfriends, and Josie and the Pussycats is iconic. His art is truly beautful because of its simplicity and strong use of line. I will miss you Alex Toth, and I'm sure many comic fans, writers, and artists who have been influenced by your work will miss you too.

Toth is one one of those artists that although he didn't really do that much comicbook work compared to some of comics other greats his style has and continued to influence many creators. Toth was one of the great "less is more" artists that many artists try to emulate in one way or another. Toth had the great abilty of expressing his art with a minimum amount of lines. Only the important lines where used (with flair) to render his characters and art. No over-rendering, crosshatching and such. His art stlye was simple and to the point. Although it looked simple pull off, it wasn't. There are artists today that try Toth's approach and fail at trying to pull it off.
Although I'm not a huge fan of the "less is more" type art I always liked Toth's stuff because he was such a good artist. Although he didn't throw in lots of detail all his characters were well drawn, and all had a distinctive look. His work never looked "cookie cutter". I don't know if Toth's art style would go over big these days because "over-rendering" and "detail" is in right now.

Toth was probably a bigger hit in the world of animation than comics. Toth designed and created the look of many Saturday morning tv shows and characters in the 70s and 80s. His style worked well in animation because it's generally easier animate simpler rendered figures.

I'm far from an expert on Toth but that's what I know and viewed his work. I know he was still actively doing projects but I'm not sure what he was doing these days.

He may be gone but his influence will always live on.

He drew one of the best Black Canary's. If you ever get a chance to check out Adventure Comics # 418 and 419, you'll know what I mean. This is my favorite costume for her, and his art makes the story so much fun.

He was also the first guy to make the Question really cool. His story in Charlton Bullseye #5 was one of the best.

And for those who don't know, Alex worked on the original Superfriends cartoon, and made the model sheets for the characters.

A great master passes on. Toth was an artist whose philosophy seems to have been 'put in only what MUST be there'...a sparse, almost oriental quality to his composition and linework made him a unique talent.
His commercial success in animation was a spin-off of his technique, doing more with less, which was well suited to early cel animation.
A great guy and tale-teller whose correspondence with Roy Thomas is well worth looking up...illustrated letters!
Alex, I'll be raising up a glass tonight to salute you!

I love those issues. I think he really captures the 70s Canary. I was very much looking forward to a Toth cover for Birds of Prey #66 back when he was scheduled to pencil it.

The Adventure comics are reprinted in the Black Canary archive.

Don't have it?

Go get it!
