I really enjoyed Greg's look at Norm Breyfogle's art on Batman http://popcultureshock.com/features.php?id=1394.

He is definitely one of my all-time favourite Batman artists. I'd put him after Aparo and Newton - but grouped in with Adams, Rogers and Sprang. He'd definitely be ahead of Novick, Miller, Cardy etc...

He excelled at combining mood and action (no easy task) and drew the greatest Batmobile. I own a page of original Breyfogle art (from 'Tec 582) and it looks wonderful up close and in person.

Although he probably hasn't received his proper due (who has?), it seems like there are a lot of fans with fond memories of his tenure drawing the Caped Crusader.

This got me thinking about other projects that would have been good fits of Breyfogle. The following came to mind:

The Shadow - He'd give it a great look, akin to Frank Robbins' run in the 70s.

Golden Age Sandman - I would have liked to see him handle an arc on Sandman Mystery Theatre

Human Target - I think that he would have been a great fit for the recent Peter Milligan series.

For some reason, no Marvel title are coming to mind right now, but I'm at work and therefore cannot fully step into comic book mode.

What do others think of Norm Breyfogle's art?
Are there any dream project you would have liked to see him tackle?

i second the accolades for norm breyfogle. i've been considering getting some of his original art as well, either through his website or maybe at an upcoming show if he actually does cons.

he did such a fluid, dynamic batman, and greg's spot on with the facial expressions--awesome.

the only project I'd like to see from him, other than steady comics work, would be a good batman mini. it seems as though plenty of current comics fans came up and cut their teeth on the grant/breyfogle batman since that was the team on the book right around the first batman movie. show those two some respect and position them as the englehart/rogers of the nineties and give us some miniseries with that team. especially since batman seems to have miniseries coming out his wazoo.

The thing that irks me most about Breyfogle is that, according to a fairly recent interview by him, he CAN'T get work from the Big Two!!

In fact, more specifically, he said the reason had to do with his higher page rate, so when he offered to cut it, they said, "We can't do that."

Huh!?!?

He does. I met him last year at San Diego. Very nice guy. And no doubt, the Batman artist of the late 80s early 90s.

He does cons - mostly in the Northeast (New York mainly, I think). He'll be at a Boston show (with Rick Leonardi!) in July...

I read that as well. It blew my mind. He is MUCH more talented than many of the artists that are working for DC in any capacity.

Breyfogle is the reason i started grabbing back issues of batman, sotb, and the like that i would have probably passed otherwise. Theres no better bang for your dollar-bin buck than this cinematic master. for memorable facial expression, great realistic anatomy, dynamic layouts, and coool dramatic effects totally befitting the character, this is your (bat)man. The big two have their heads up their butts not to cough up even twice as much per page rate for him.

Norm Breyfogle should reunite with Peter Milligan on a Martian Manhunter book, dadgummit.
