View Full Version : Nextwave #5! Koala Bears! Explosions!
Jake V

Quite possibly the greatest 22 pages of story that marvel has ever released. The story really isn't that importent as long as people get kicked and things blow up. And they do.
Some choice lines include:
"Cover your eyes, go back to Avengers mansion, and make my dinner."
"Tabitha! Quickly! To me my X-Bait! Help me lift my gun! Techno-organic prolapse imminent!"

Theissue starts off with the Nextwave Squad going to destroy a War Garden, from which the Human Resources Broccoli-Men are grown.
H.A.T.E. beats them there, explosions ensue, ridiculously strange UWMD's are dropped, Koala Bears fall from the sky, but none of that's important. What's important is a line delivered by Captain America to Monica Rambeau in a flashback that is WAY too funny to be spoiled in a message board. Holy crap, I almost died. I didn't even like this book at first, but it's totally found its place now, and this issue was worth the wait.
Now what'd we learn?
Aaron is ****.
...also, even a robot can cry.
Celestials are a bunch of ****s.
Cable has big guns.
Koalas are super cute, and Elsa has some serious qualms about shooting them.
...however, that does not stop her from shooting Koalas.
Dirk Anger thinks he's fat.
Best. Issue. (Of Nextwave). Ever.
And CBR got referred to in the letters page. So hey, there ya' go.

Goddamn you, Jake V. You beat me by two minutes. I waited all day because I figure you'd post one, and as soon as I decide to, you ruin my day.
Funny how similar the opinions are...

This wasn't a superhero comic book. There wasn't enough crying and there was too much enjoyment. I want my angstdollar back.

One of the best books Marvel is putting out.
Oh lord, this issue was hilarious! The Captain American line was funny as hell!
God, I hope Immonen doesn't leave the book anytime soon, though.
This is an ongoing, right?

Nextwave spoiler/review threads are always full of inane jokes and presumably funny reviews in the spirit of the book.
Even the titles of the threads are supposed to be funny.
Is that the level of humor in the book?

Are you like, level 7?
I hear humor level 5 is really tough to beat.

Eh. It outsells about 225 other books.
No one's under the impression that a book starring Boom Boom and Machine Man will ever crack the top 10.

Jake actually did in the first post...(we started simultaneous threads so mine came after his, making me look stupid again, which is not hard)...Monica's complaining that she didn't have to deal with such absurdity in the Avengers. She is shown to be a liar when she says, in a flashback, something like, "Those are the Gamma-Activated Bull-Men from beyond the 16th Perimiter!...and they're naked." To which Captain Freakin' America matter-of-factly responds, "Cover your eyes, go back to Avengers Mansion, and make my dinner."

Warren Ellis should write everything there is. Not just comics, everything where the printed word is involved. Billboards. Surgeon General's warnings. Fire safety instructions. Credit card applications...OF DEATH!!!!
Monica: "You are ****. I mean, you're the **** robot I ever heard of."
Celestial: "You are total ****."
Machine Man: "...what?"
Celestial: "No. Really. You're ****."
Celestial: "You're turning away from us. We are speaking to you and you're turning away from us. This is exactly the kind of **** we are talking about here."
Boom Boom: "AAAAA! Death bears!"
Lizard Man: "Schrödinger's death!"
Captain's mom: "Special bear's dead."
Elsa: "Samurai robots beat guns. No question."

This is going to make a epic, **** fantastic trade or HC. It doesn't even have to try to be awe-inspiring. It just is.
Question:
Someone (Stonegold, maybe? One of the funny guys, I think) had "'Special Bear's dead' - Nextwave #5" in their sig...when Nextwave #1 came out. So...how was that known back then?

That would be I, and thank you for that. :) Warren Ellis had released that scene from his script through his mailing list a few months back. It was actually about the time #2 came out, I think.

I wish that Marvel and Ellis would state this is in canon so that once the series has finsihed the team can still exsist in the marvl universe.

He rips off West Wing? Where?
Or is this going to be a sophisticated point along the lines of "Bendis characters talk a lot. West Wing characters talk a lot. Therefore..."
To keep it on topic, Nextwave is amazing. Annoyingly, don't get my copy of #5 till next week.

I really hope the book isn't cancelled and Ellis doesn't leave after #12, as has been rumoured... I needed to save money, so I pledged to drop all the ongoing titles I was reading that I didn't enjoy as much as All-Star Superman. So all I've got left are that and Nextwave! And there's rumours All-Star Supes is only going 12 issues, as well.

As I understand, Machine Man's last series ended with him meeting the Celestials. So the fact that he'd then been called a loser by Kirby Space Gods provides a nice bit of continuity to explain his new attitude.
That, and Monica appearing in She-Hulk 7 in her Nextwave costume were all the signs I needed to know this was in continuity.
