In respect to the current 2 polls of Uncanny and Adj. less, I thought I'd do the same. I'm talking about the first series, not the crappy second series, and not the 3 with the academy x characters.

Mine would have to be, far and away New Mutants 18. Dani was just my favorite character, she was so well fleshed out, and while her powers weren't all that offensive, she still was the greatest leader they had. Even in the character bio's they had, it said she could be on par with a young Cyclops

I've never read an issue of New Mutants, or X-Force (except for X-Statix X-Force). For shame, I hear it was awesome.

I love every issue! (Until Cable shows up that is)

But especially good ones that come to mind are issues 14, where Magik joins the team and shakes things up, 18-20, the Demon Bear Saga, 31-34, where Karma reappears, possesed by the Shadow King, 59-61, the Fall of the Mutants tale where Cypher dies, and 71-73, he Inferno issues where we see Illyana's complete transformation into the Darkchylde and then her bittersweet sacrifice.

Forget about X-Force, but definately pick up the newly released New Mutants tpb that has the first 7 issues as well as the Graphic Novel and Uncanny X-Men 166. Sooo good.

New Mutants #45. Not talented enough to post a scan, but maybe somebody else will. Anyway, it was the last of a series of 5 done-in-one issues, and the best of a really, really good lot. With Kitty Pryde guest-starring, we find out what happens to a young mutant with a completely harmless power named Larry Bodine when his classmates find out what he is. If Kitty's speech at the end doesn't make you emotional, time to turn in your resignation form from the human race.

Sunspot & Wolfsbane manifest the powers of Cloak & Dagger respectively. All the kids get into the spotlight, but Magik plays a key role in helping "cure" them from the link from Cloak & Dagger. Selene & Emmanuelle DaCosta join the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club.

The New Mutants #51:

Professor Xavier has a chance to go back home because Magik's mutant teleportation powers, but he decides to stay with the Starjammers & allow Magneto to keep running his school. Xavier is also afraid oh what the Earth has become when he learns his original X-Men, as X-Factor, hunt mutants, & the Marauders had slain most of the Morlocks. This is another reason why Xavier stays with the Starjammers Illyana is forced to teleport the New Mutants home when she is possessed by Karma (Illyana is terrified of going back to Limbo after she loses control & S'ym begins his civil war against the Darkchilde the previous issue). Magneto & Storm jointly become the White King of the Lords Cardinal too. Kevin Nowlan's artwork is really beautiful in this issue.

I really like The New Mutants #1-75 plus the annuls & specials. It's hard just choosing one issue.

Bill Sienkiewicz did all the artwork from The New Mutants #18-31; he inked The New Mutants #35-40. You should really invest in The New Mutants backissues.

If you give it a try, you'll thank yourself. Like rilokyle said, there's the a new TPB reprinting the early stuff (the Uncanny issue is #167), and you should be able to find most issues at major online retailers for a buck or two.

I'll also vote for the Demon Bear Saga (particularly #18). Bill Sienkiewicz's art on NM is very unusual, so it's possible that a particular reader may not like some of his stuff. But some of stuff his is so darn beautiful, I think it transcends stylistic preferences. I think Illyana and Lockheed from panel 1, page 9 of #18 is one of my all-time favorite renderings in an X-book.

I also really like #63 which spotlights Illyana and weaves a tale about how she ended up in a funky spacesuit during the famed slumber party issue.

I liked one of the early issues where the kids go to the mall, and get attacked by Sentinels. It's the first time where Sam turns on his own.

I also really liked the arc that introduces Lila Chene (and Guido, I suppose), and creates the improbable love story between her and Sam.

No... your lobotomy was clearly punishment enough.

Actually, it depends on when you began reading. I like Louise Simonson's writing, but her NM work was no great shakes. Liefeld's still blew, but at least it was something different. If you started reading during the Claremont years, though... yeah, you do deserve a beating.

I did get the shakes from reading her new mutants, because they made me become epileptic from them. I'm like, is this the same Louise from X-Factor and Power Pack? For real, though, the series really started to blow as her writing went on, especially when Liefeld came on.

Its unique.

It is the only superhero team book I can think of where the readers nearly always refer to the characters by their names. Not their codenames.

It's Rahne, Dani, Sam, 'berto, Xi'an, Yana, Amara, etc.

X-Mens got some of that, but not to the same degree.

Who is on writing credits for the series?

Claremont wrote issues 1-53, as well as the initial graphic novel, annuals 1-3, the special edition, two random later issues; the quality level varied a bit in the early issues, but he settled into his groove in the mid-teens and it was spectacular from there on out. Louise Simonson took over with issue 54 and wrote it until issue 86 or so, although Rob Liefeld became the artist sometime in the 70's and began taking on co-plotter duties sometime in the 80's... he took over as official writer with issue 87 and wrote it until the title ended with #100.

Agreed.I was moved when it was referenced in Kitty's speech in XM:TE.My other two favourite issues are the issue when Dani tries to battle Death over the life of her childhood friend and the issue when the New Mutants are killed by the Beyonder.

...well, you kinda can. I mean, he wasn't funny yet, he didn't really say or do anything entertaining... he was really just a pretty one-dimensional parody of Deathstroke in his first appearance.

How could I have omitted New Mutants Special Edition #1 (from the Asgard storyline) from my first post? That's one of the great New Mutants stories and an early Art Adams work.

Louise Simonson took over with issue 54 and wrote it until issue 86 or so, although Rob Liefeld became the artist sometime in the 70's and began taking on co-plotter duties sometime in the 80's... he took over as official writer with issue 87 and wrote it until the title ended with #100.
I don't think Louise Simonson was off the book that early. She credited as a writer as late as #97

lucky one was right with CC writing the graphic novel, and 1-53, plus 2 random issues, with annuals 1-3, and the giant size(great story, my first new mutants issue). Louise jumped on with 54 and wrote until 97, Liefeld came onto art on issue 86, and I guess you could say co-plotted until 98, where he took over full plotting credits, and Nicieza was scripter.

Is it me, or was this storyline like the shit, it set up so much stuff, and was so great, I was like, I have to get the rest of this series.

I loved New Mutants # 14 (duh), and also the Asgard special...Demon Bear saga was awesome.....

After CC left, Louise had some good stories, but it really started to suffer at the end, and then Rob Liefeld came onboard...
People can slam him, call him names, throw everything at him (including the kitchen sink) blame him for everthing bad in comics, but what he did on New Mutants and X-force; it was damn awesome.
He really did take the NM to the next level.

Sure, reading it now might make you go  (Marvel really didn't know what to do with Cable's origin at the beginning, so there are many hints that just doesn't make sense) sometimes, but most of the time it still makes me smile, and remember how much I looked forward to the next issue back then. :)
