As a big fan of Dr. Strange, I'm wondering when (if ever) they'll bring back an ongoing series. He is not only one of those most powerful heroes in the MU, but there are way too many cool stories that someone can come up with for him.

Thoughts?

It seems like most writers have trouble writing Dr. Strange, because the character is so powerful and yet those powers are complex. I think that he tends to re-surface every time Marvel has a hotshot artist who really wants to draw Dr. Strange and his mystical adventures.

Well according to an interview with JQ a couple of months ago on Newsarama, there will be a new Dr Strange title debuting in October. It will be written by Brian K Vaughan with art and covers by Marcos Martin.

Here is a link:-

http://www.newsarama.com/JoeFridays/JoeFridays40.html

The section on the Dr Strange series, which includes preview art is about a 1/3 of the way through the interview.

I can't remember where I read it, either JQ said it somewhere or it was as an introduction to a tpb/hc (maybe Runaways Vol#1?), but someone in comics once said that almost every writer who pitches to Marvel pitches a Dr. Strange story/series.

I guess they just never fit what Marvel is doing at the time or what direction they want to see the character take.

I too would love to see a new Strange ongoing. He has been away for far too long. The fact that this new mini is being written by Brian K Vaughn, one of my current top 3 writers (the others being Brubaker and Kirkman), only serves to make me want it even more.

Thanks for the article! Too bad it's yet another miniseries (The Flight of Bones was very good IMHO)

You know, Steve Englehart probably is available.

I'm almost apt to say that Dr. Strange and The Punisher are two sides of the same coin, certain heroes that need to have their own corner of the MU to themselves.

New Series on the horizon:D :D :D

Man I can't wait for the new Strange series. He's an awesome charcter who defintely needs a corner of the MU to himself, but at the moment, he dosent even have his own series. I can't wait.

Maybe after civil war kicks in he might get some more respect since he seems tied to it and played a part in house of m.

I love dr strange though when he is done well he is great.

I just hope they ignore the "okay as a movie pitch but not very good as a retelling of the origin" Strange series by JMS.

I don't see how any writer today could capture Strange better than back in the 70's and 60's.

For what it's worth there is a Doctor Strange animated movie due out February 2007 in the same sort of vein of Ultimate Avengers.

But yeah, I'd like to see an ongoing myself.

I agree; as much as I like JMS, that "re-imagining" of Strange didn't catch my eye. Lost interest after like the 3rd issue.

That mini series was god awfull. Not just how stephen was portrayed but the pacing was awfull and it felt nothing like dr strange, more like a generic telling of a generic hero. It was very cliched and strange is fairly unique in most aspects.

Atleast its not as bad as the ultimate version of dr strange, I feel like uds was tainted forever in just the few issues he was in, ruined my desire to see him in a ultimate story.

And strange has been done well since the 70's. I personally loved triumph and torment by mignola. He did a great job with strange even if dr doom was bit more of the star.

The problem is they either use crap throw away writers who do bad jobs or they try and use someone who is popular at the time and writes him like a everyday comic charcter. Strange isnt that easy, he doesnt run in and fight bad guys and win. Id like to see gaiman take a crack at him.

Wow. Perfect statement! Someone at marvel really needs to drink a V-8. I would actually start collecting again if they did that.

I'm still miffed at Marvel for ditching the midnight sons continuity in his series. I still don't know what happend to his demon stalker sister nil. Also Id like a follow up on the contruct Strange and his relationship with clea. Flight of bones was good till the guy turned out to be a mutie.

THAT would kick ass if Gaiman all of a sudden wanted to do Dr. Strange.

True...a lot of the stories and characters in the Midnight Sons were basically left unanswered. According to the OHOTMU Marvel Knights '05, Strange and Clea are, ahem, estranged. I just said WTF?! What happened?!

Flight of Bones was good period; they actually should've started off an ongoing series from that point.

I actually think his last ongoing series and The Flight of Bones were very good indeed. Just wished they would give Strange a great artist to really give some imagination to the storytelling.

I think it would be cool if they brought back the Strange creature and he could be used as Dr. Stranges go between and he could be sent out on missions when Dr. Strange felt they were beneath his attending.

Ok... Strange lovers I'm with everyone of you. I just completed my collection of the 81 issue 1974 Dr.strange series. The initial run by Englehart and Brunner is nearly matchless IMO, and the Colan art that follows incite words of greatness in my mind. But I just used the phrase "nearly matchless", and that is because I still consider the Lee/Ditko days to be the as yet unsurpassed pinnacle of things Strange. What does everyone else think of as ultimate expression of the good doctor's works?

Mike Carey wants to work on Dr. Strange really bad. He said something along the lines of 'if I were a more violent man, I would fight Brian Vaughn for the chance to write the upcoming Strange series." Now that Lucifer is done as far as production, maybe Peter Gross could venture crosstown to Marvel for art duties. (He may DC exclusive. I can't remember, but it seems like he's only doing "art continuity" for Testament right now.)

If Doctor Strange's upcoming limited series is anything as redundantly painful read as Strange, I'm not going to buy the book, depsite my liking the character. Kevin Nowlan needs to be hired to do all the Doctor Strange cover art.

The last time Doctor Strange was really good is 1988's Doctor Strange with Roy & Dan Thomas & Jackson Guice.

I wouldn't mind seeing Milligan get another shot at Doc. His DEADGIRL mini-series was basically a Dr. Strange story with an X-Statix overlay, and it was a ton of fun.

That said, I'm really looking forward to Vaughan and Martin's take.

I really hope Dead Girl at least shows up as a supporting character. Her weird style of flirtation with Dr. Strange was some of the best stuff so far this year.

I agree that "Strange" was horrible, but another recent (few years ago) Strange miniseries was pretty good. "Flight of Bones" or somesuch. Well-written, good-looking.

I enjoyed the Deadgirl series, but if Milligan did another Strange book I'd hope for a little less goofy, I think.

I can't wait for BKV and Martin's Dr. Strange. Even if BKV is divulging absolutely nothing about how he's going to go about it. DAMN YOU, BRIAN!

My favorite quote concerning Dr. Strange is still from Warren Ellis:
Question: "Think you'd enjoy writing Dr. Strange, mr. Ellis?"
Warren Ellis: "Been there, done that, had to quit after one issue because the editor's boss was complaining about the lack of fightscenes and, I swear to god, 'all this magic stuff.'"

BKV's version of Strange will be all that and a bag of chips! Also, I really liked JMS's retelling, though I know it is a sore spot for some of you.

If there ever is an ongoing Dr. Strange series, place David Finch as head artist on that one STAT! Forgotten how awesome his depiction on Strange was in Avengers #503 (if I'm correct).

Loved the whole story on how he became Sorceror Supreme in the "A Separate Realty" TPB. Awesome story.

Ultimate expression of Strange was Marvel Premiere #10 imho. Showed his realtionship with the ancient one at its most painful and heartrending, went so cosmic it should make other writers blush to use the word and Brunner art. Finally it did what Doc is as a symbolic construct: merged the ideas of eastern mysticism and western self sufficiency together.

Best ... Comic ... Ever.

I absolutely LOVE Englehart's work on Strange, honestly it was that more than the Ditko days which made me love the character.

Doctor Strange should cut his moustache and he would already be 100% better. Garanteed. :D
