I know it's two threads in less than a week, but I'll stop after this one.

Just wondering what everyones favorite "X-men" issues are.

I'm guessing thee is going to be a lot of Morrison in here, but I never really here what come before that.

I have to admit, issues 1-3 were amazing.

It would have to be somethng from Morrison's run, but picking just one book is tough. I think the one I liked most was perhaps the Return to Weapon Plus first issue. It's the onw where Scott is in the Hellfire Club watching the Psychic Strippers and he is joined by Wolverine and recruited to go into the Weapon Plus "World" by Fantomex and Wolverine. There was some cool character development in that issue between Scott and Logan and we got to see the mysterious Fantomex a bit more.

I always felt Scott and Logan's relationship was always sort of glossed over as unnaturally advesarial with Scott always looking like the more forgiving one and extending the olive branch for the same of the team, but here we have Logan needing Scott for his leadership and power and it was nice to see that mutual respect expressed in such a clear fashion.

For me that was probably one of the best scenes in Morisson's run. It was great. Thats the same issue with the Sabretooth urinal scene yeah?

And some classy Bachalo artwork.

Boisenberry pie issue aside, Grant Morrison's run was great pretty much the whole way through.

It's just hard to pick just one specific best issue because it's like one big narrative.

I really enjoyed 1-11, all of Jim Lee's issues.

Issue 25 is a classic, where Wolverine gets his adamantium ripped out by Magneto.

Issue 37, from the Phalanx Covenant is also really good and made me cry when I first read it because Blink dies.

Morrion's whole run is amazing; I especially liked E is for Extinction, Imperial, Riot at the Mansion, and Planet X.

More recently, I like 173 where Alex confesses he is still in love with Lorna. I love 180 because it has some really good Alex/Lorna scenes, and 186 just because Alex asks, "How's my girl doing?" about Lorna. I'm such a cornball.

"E for Extinction" is by far the best three issues of Adjectiveless X-Men. Hard to say which is the best of the lot.

Return to Weapon Plus (with Wolverine and Fantomex getting Scott loaded and kidnapping him for a space mission, and Scott arguing that his mutant power is to "be depressing") were the highlights.

The Lucky One
05-23-2006, 10:48 AM
Leaving aside 1-3 -- because, aside from being three issues instead of one, X-Men stories don't get much better -- I'd say #28. It's the one where Sabretooth has just started living at the mansion, so Jean Grey completely makes him her bitch just to make him realize how completely powerless and nonthreatening he is.

E is for Extinction, Riot at Xavier's, Joe Kelly's entire run, later Kwannon issues by Nicieza, Acolytes forming, the OZT issues...I'd really have to reread and dig up the run to remember everything I'd call a favorite. :D

Emma Frost's only code name is the White Queen. But the White Queen name really does not work since she is not officially a member of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle.

Wait a minute...new is an adjective!

Xmen 1-3 beats anything by a mile, even Morrisons brilliant stuff...and certainly is crazy stuff. Gotta like Morrison, he has range. Oddly enough his best writing tends to be with Quitely drawing...and yet....i hate Quitely art so much. Its so fugly. Wierd bubbly people. And someone put his cyclops' head in a vice grip.

When's Careys first issue? That might make a run for 1-3

X-Men 55: The first issue of the Onslaught storyline that I read. It made me want to know what would happen next.

X-Men 85: When Magneto is talking to a construction worker. Magneto is trying to judge the worker's reaction about mutants and when he reveals who he is at the end pretty much demands that the worker wants Magneto to die.

New X-Men 132: Xavier and Jean are in Genoshia after its destruction. Reading those final moments of people's lives still gives me chills.

Issue 37, from the Phalanx Covenant is also really good and made me cry when I first read it because Blink dies.

It always amazed me how new characters can never really survive nowadays but Blink who is killed in like three issues worth appearances basically gets her own team book.

They finally made a good new character kill her then have to make an alternate version to please everyone.

New X-Men 137 - 139
Quentin Quire's "Omega Gang" cause a riot resulting in the death of one of the Stepford Cuckoos, who then sever any ties with Emma Frost.
The girls, blaming Frost for the death of Sophie, tell Jean Grey-Summers that her husband is having an affair with Emma leading to a psychic showdown between the 2 women, and the subsequent "death" of Emma Frost.

X-Men 41
The incredibly powerful son of Charles Xavier - Legion - tries to do right by his dad, by killing his rival - Magneto - in the past before he can do any damage to his fathers life.
Storm, Iceman, Psylocke & Bishop try to prevent this from happening, but just as Legion is about to strike a deadly blow to Erik Lensherr, Charles Xavier saves his friend by sacrificing himself.
The future crumbles as Charles Xavier dies in the past, and the X-Men ceast to exist as they were never created. Apocalypse senses a change in the time line and Rogue & Gambit share a kiss just before reality shatters.
Only Bishop remains, as he himself is from the future.

I loved Quitely's art on the X-Men. Morrison and Quitely are easily my favorite artist/writer combination. I'd take Quitely's X-Men over Jim Lee's.

You're right though, after Riot at Xavier's was the peak of the run. Planet X was disapointing after all of the buildup (really cool Xorn revelation not withstanding), and Here Comes Tomorrow was just a mess.

But Quitely is uncreative. I mean....a mutant with a long neck, one long forearms, one with three faces, one with three mouths. those are birth defects, not mutations. Plus, they are all bubbly. Id give you 3 quitely for one Jim Lee wierd hip cock pose anyday. We are in agreement yes. The deal is made.

See the problem with the Xorn revelation i have was not only does it not work with the storyline that Xorn is magneto, it doesnt make sense that he didnt take advantage of Kid Omega's riot and join up with them, and rather decided to stick with no depth perception boy and the rest of his idiot class

ALso, didnt Xorn jump on a car at one point....that was pretty cool. To me Morrisons run ends there. Since marvel seems to be ignoring or retconning everything after that, i shall too. :D

Through his pain, LOGAN remembers a myth of old... ...of a beautilful bird that was so worshipped, it would rise reborn from death's ashes. But though he desperately wants to believe otherwise, he knows that his beloved JEAN... is no PHOENIX...

Then there's angel's sacrifice,... and then, whispering a prayer of forgiveness, dives with blinding speed, toward the force field generator which protects apocalypse's stronghold!

Then magneto finishing off apocalypse... for twenty years, you've gone on and on about how only the strong survive. tell me again apocalypse... just how strong you are.

New X-Men #115: The second part of E is For Extinction.

Scott, Logan, and Ugly John fight Cassandra Nova.
They beat her.
They discover her final plan.
Professor X looks at Cerebra, and says something poignant.

One of the best single X-Men issues ever, and probably the one that established Morrison as the best writer since Claremont was great.

I know I'm repeating a lot of people but...

1-3 were the first Xmen books (and the first comics I got when I started seriously collecting), and #25, since that was when I hoped into the regular series monthly.

Can't say I found many of Morrisions books as memorible as those arcs. Probably because its more recent. I did enjoy his run, though I felt the art for the most part was too messy and over the top, which probably hurt my opinion of the series (art won't make a book for me, but it can hurt it).
