Hello everyone!
Do you own a piece of original art from me...? Well don't keep it all to yourself. Scan that baby and send it to me to post on my website for everyone to see! I'm interested in all pieces of all sizes.. anything from a small convention sketch to a the largest commission! I WANT 'EM ALL!
Somewhere out there is a nice 18x26 piece of the Phantom Stranger that I drew for a fan at last year's motor city con... Anyone seen it?!.... Zatanna turning Bouncing Boy down for a date!!! ( wow !) and still some where else is a nice crayon drawing of a nouveau girl wearing only a red scarf! Please share these goodies with the rest of us!
Send all scans to: stuartsayger@hotmail.com
--Scan all art as COLOR, even if the piece is B/W
--Scan art at 300 DPI
--List "SAYGER ART SCAN" as the subject line when sending art!
Some of the bigger and better pieces will end up featured in one of my convention sketchbooks!
Thanks to everyone out there who's already sent me scans!
Keep 'em comin!

I'll definately mention it to my wife. I'm sure she'd love to post the Rogue sketch card you did for her at the comic con in Toronto this past april. She's also looking forward to getting the Mystique card too.

Hey Stuart,

Anyway if you have trouble remembering me.. Check under your News file on your site.. I'm the girl with the huge grin next to you. ^^ Thanks again for drawing her for me..

Hey Stuart,
I am the guy who gets a Deadman or Creeper from you every year. Last year at the San Diego Con you did the two-page spread of them in my sketchbook. I scanned it in and still have it as my wallpaper on my computer. Did you get the cd I sent with all of my sketches from you on it? Also are you going to make it to the Heroes Con?
Stuart Sayger
06-19-2006, 09:54 PM
No.. I don't think that I got a disc with the deadman / creaper piece.. I remember drawing it very well.. I think that it was one of the very first pieces that I drew at a convention using the pastels over ink... If you bring the book with that art in it to Heroes con Please stop by and let me take a look again.. It was a fun piece!
...Do you have any words of advice regarding the Heroes con...? This will be my first year at that show!

Well from what I hear the Heroes Con is going to be huge compared to other years. It's nowhere near the size of San Diego but they tend to focus more on comics then Hollywood and anime. They are also great supporters of indie comics. The guest list is supposed to have a bunch of big names that don't generally come out for this con. This could be a great weekend to network without having to fight for someone’s time. As far as the area around the convention center it's got quite a few bars, clubs, restaurants, etc. I always suggest the "Penguin" and "Lupie's" as great places to eat but I tend to migrate toward dives.:)

Stuart,
Any chance you'll be making it over to Baltimore Comic-Con on Sept. 9 & 10? It's usually a very nice turn-out with a plethora of talented individuals. You'd fit in, nicely. If you're not familiar with it, here's the link: http://www.comicon.com/baltimore/.
Hope you can make it!

.. Hey you guys.. thanks for posting your drawings.. Rose.. Kristin.. you guys were so nice to me in chicago... There's a reason why that is my #1 favorite convention of the year. I've never been treated so well by fans!
Kristin.. You've got some good stuff going with your own art... I hope you stay with it. You got a table at the convention earlier than most any of the artist's that I've ever know... Initiative is a big part of finding success! .. You still need to talk to Rachael though ( -a-hem !)
Next year im going to stay at the Hyatt so that I can really hang out with everyone and have a good time.. I hope you all make it back to chicago for next year.. how about some post con drawing in the lobby.. you know.. where they have the "buck rogers lounge"..? Who'se up for it!?

Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong. I tryed to post a photo but instead it posted a link. can someone set me on the correct path?
Stuart Sayger
05-14-2007, 04:30 AM
To have the photo appear and not have a link appear your text needs to read like the following .. with [ IMG ] in front of the address of the photo. And have [ /IMG ] appear immediately after the address of the photo ( take out all the blank spaces between the characters so that you have one continuous line of text... When you hit the "Insert image" button a window should appear that has "http://" already in the field... Becareful not to have this portion of info listed as part of your address line twice"
Confusing..? Yes!
If you take out the spaces after the two places where "IMG appears you will have the correct line of text to post a photo!

Hope that helps!

You'll hate this answer.. but I use just about what ever I can get my hands on.. I often use my fingers to apply inks... My favorite ink is sumi ink ( for chinese writing).. I believe that it has some shalack in it... it gives a nice hard black plate finish, but reflects a li'l and can be harder to scan.... as always.. the best to use is what is best for you! But you knew that ...

I seams like something to try how dose it work? I'm always open for new ways to draw;)

sumi ink is pretty cheap... most any and all art shops will have a bottle of ink you can buy for about 4 bucks... as for the application of the ink, you can use a brush ( naturally ).. but the ink is a bit thick for most fine point nibs.. so you'll need to get a different ink to use with your pens... Ultimately if you draw they way I d0 ( pretty loose and expressively ).. you should try just about any thing that you can get your hands to and dip it in the the ink and then see what kind of mark you can make.. try using a piece of steel wool.. or a paper towel.. i've even used a piece of bread.. but beware... the bread will cause mold to grow in you ink... no kidding..!
I ink with my fingers because the oil from my skin will make it smear and mark differently.. I'm probably crazy.. but i do it!

Catwoman in her classic costume by Stuart Sayger.
The commission was done at MegaCon 2008 were I also go to talk with Mr. Sayger. I'm glad we were of the same mind (as many fans are) that the current leather and goggles ensemble currently worn by the feline femme fatale is simply terrible. And that her purple and classic costumes are much more flattering.
Mr. Sayger said that he would draw Catwoman on a dark Gotham rooftop with rain-drenched hair. One of these days I'll have the money to commission such a beautiful image, but until then we have this fabulous head shot:

No lie.. I use just about anything and everything to draw with.. but there are a few tools that I use more often that most..
#1 thing that I can't live with out is just a plain ol bottle of ink... I draw alot with sumi ink... It dries with a bit of a different surface than india inks... Sumi has more of a hard shell finish... i think that it allows white inks to stand on top more , thus the white will stay brighter... I like to apply ink with all sorts of tools.. yes, I use brushs just like everyone else, but i love to use my fingers to draw with.. I'll put my finger right in the ink sometimes.. I can make a line with my fingernail and then roll my finger to the side and controll the line's thickness .. ( no kidding !) I'll also use all kinds of different cheap pens.. I draw for reproduction, so if i am drawing with many different types of black ink and they don't really match, I never mind..
the #2 thing i need is a jar of PROwhite correction fluid/ paste/goop... I love that stuff... you can apply it just like ink except that it is thicker ( you can thin it with distilled water)... yes i'll use my fingers when drawing iwth it as well...
Alot of the old school artists don't like to use correction paint and will just about never layer ink and correction paint.. I do it on almost every piece that I make... the lesson there is do what works well and looks good to you... ( though im sure that Joe Kubert would have stuck me with a ruler if he saw how I worked!)

I could post a pic of the Spiderman you did for me at WW Chicago. I don't have a scan so the pic has all 16 artists but I can put it up if that's cool. It's one of the favorites from everyone I've shown it to.
