What character really reaks of the era in which they were created?

Beast

Anyone who's origins have had to stayed tied to the era in which they were originally tied, and can't have their origins slid forward to accomidate Marvel Time. So that would be mostly just Captain America and Magneto.

Except Cap you just change how long he was in the ice for. In terms of truly dated, I'm thinking characters based on particular fads, like Dazzler or Razorback. Or any communist villain.

She-Hulk seems to get a lot of action, but I'm not sure you'd call them "dates."

Oh ... wait a minute ... nevermind.

he's not a nazi any longer, iirc. even he would admit that the idea of the Third Reich coming to power is kind of old. but he's still a hateful racist s.o.b.

I am tempted to say Brother Voodoo, but it is hard to acknowledge that he was ever really considered "with it".

he's definately a throwback. someone should rent him a copy of Constantine and show him how a hougan should dress. Midnite put him to shame.

what's that got to do with her being dated? she's firmly set as a cold war spy. she's a russian spy. who is she spying on?

didn't that look come before Lorenzo Lamas' 'Renegade' tv series? i can't remember. it's definately an outdated look unless you're still in a hair metal band.

Dazzler's origins may be dated, but the character herself has nothing to do with disco so I personally wouldn't call her dated.

Boom Boom was pretty damn 80's- then they updated her costume for the 90's, but conceptually she reeked of 80's. She doesn't translate into the 2000's at all.

And if Luke Cage hadn't gotten a new costume he would have been dated like no other.

The Master of Kung Fu (Shang Chi) is very much a character for a certain era (70's martial arts craze). Definitely Dazzler, although attempts have been made to move her away from the Disco craze.

she sang disco music.25 years ago. She doesn't sing disco music now, nor is she portrayed as a disco person, so how can the character, as she is portrayed now, be dated?
Definitely Dazzler, although attempts have been made to move her away from the Disco craze.Again, she dropped the disco costume over twenty years ago. It only recently reappeared in two somewhat recent stories (Deadpool and XMU) to be humorous. She hasn't been tied to disco in over two decades. In the '80s she looked the part. In the '90s she looked the part. And now, well, love it or hate it she looks nothing like disco.

no offense but there's nothing more depressing than a 'retired' disco queen. the pink hair isn't helping either. but that's just my opinion. i liked her fine back when they were stuck in Australia and disco wasn't so dead.

I wouldn't call Shang-Chi a dated character -- martial arts action is still popular even if Jet Li and Jackie Chan have replaced Bruce Lee on the screen. On the other hand, the red PJs with yin-yang symbol on the back? Dated.

Iron Man isn't dated, even though they have to keep rewriting his origin to keep him contemporary -- but those early issues, with IM beating his opponents with THE POWER OF TRANSISTORS, sure are hilarious to read now.

But I'm going to have to agree that the Aquarian wins this category. The costume, the beard, the powers, the name "Wundarr" -- all unavoidably '70s.

Depressing? I don't think most would consider former disco singers like Deborah Harry or Diana Ross depressing. Both, like Alison Blaire, surpassed their disco categorizations (of course Ross' Motown origins helped). And the pink hair...it's just a look. It definitely puts her in more a pop vein than disco though.

At least in most households. :)

imagine Deborah Harry in spandex on a superteam.

yeah, and Alison was never motown. heck, she wasn't that great at disco. maybe i'm just misinterpreting things but Dazzler seems to be a one-hit wonder of heroics. she was on top at one point; really really overexposed. then she disappeared. and when she resurfaced, she wasn't spectacularly different. she hasn't really stayed with the times. so all i'm thinking about is how much attention Marvel gave her during the 80's and how nothing really came of it. she's just not that popular. if she disappeared, the marvel universe wouldn't be affected in any way.

And the pink hair...it's just a look. It definitely puts her in more a pop vein than disco though.

true. and i wasn't socially aware enough for "disco is dead" to mean anything. i just subconsciously realized that Dazzler was aping the times. she had that punk look going on with the sweatband and the bright colors; very bangles-esque.

I would say that the only ones that are still truly dated are the ones that have spent alot of time in limbo. Such as Iron Fist and Shang Chi, nothing has been added to their character. Where as Luke Cage and Dazzler have been used and moved past the role that they came into being originally.

He has become up to date in Fabian's C&D, he's much more current. Rarely does he break out the stupidly big guns anymore.

Sorry Matt. I have nothing personal against Dazzler (or you), but when I see her I think 70's.
For what it's worth, I agree that she is no longer all about disco (if indeed she ever was) but thats what comes to mind when I see her.
