You guys should start a poll.
I, for one, would be interested if the majority of you guys (1)actually like the comic, (2) like to make fun of the comic (3) dislike the comic or (4) think the comic is a sign of the apocalypse.
Or whatever choices you guys come up with.

I'm solidly in the (2) category, as you can plainly see! This book is so much fun to satirize, I practically have an orgasm when I buy it! :p

I love the comic, and I'm not making fun of it. Rather, I like to discuss and laugh at the absurdity of it all.

I really didn't care for the book for the first three issues; life being as it is, of course, I had to pretty much preorder the first several before even seeing them. so I still have #5 on order. all that said, though.... finally.... I think I'm getting the joke. Y'know what did it?
that enormously extravagent lonnnnnnnng stretching fold after fold after fold-out of the Batcave. OK: I get it, now: Batm... no, wait, needs all caps: BATMAN TO THE EXTREEEEMMMME!!! So now, I guess, I'm also a 1 & 2; I've started to like it, and don't care that it makes No frickin' sense, and so 2, I'm happy to make fun of it.
Matt
The story is a complete and utter joke, but the arts so pretty i may have to buy it just to see what a train wreck this ASBaR Justice League turns out to be.
EDIT for a 180 - Actually, having just read #4 I have to say i actually enjoyed the issue! It was pretty funny, and I like that Batman is recognized by everyone else in the book to be a complete nut. It's kinda fun in a sick sort of way. Alfred was completely badass in this book as well.

I :) LIKE it!
I buy it for the art. If it wasn't Jim Lee or some other artist I really love. I wouldn't bother with it. It's essentially trash.

For all this talk about "It's a satire!" and "It's a parody!," the bottom line is, it's not funny, it's not enjoyable, the characters are poorly written, and the story is boring.

I love Frank Miller.
I love Jim Lee.
I love Batman.
I HATE this book.
Yet I feel compelled to buy it.
My all-time favorite writer working with my all-time favorite artist on my all-time favorite character.
I get that its Frank poking fun, but it's not working for me.
*long sigh*
I'll continue to buy as long as the creative team stays the same though.

Whatever the intent may be behind this bizarre version of Batman, it's not being done well.
Plus, I don't even like the art. Jim Lee's work has a static sameness to it that really bugs me.

I'm in the #2 camp, I guess. Moreso, I'm just so disappointed by this book. I expected so much more. I wanted to like it. I wanted it to rock! Instead, I just make fun of it....

I love this book. I think the easiest way to enjoy this is to NOT look at it as a Batman story but a Frank Miller book that takes the Batman character to such ridiculous extremes that it becomes something else entirely. Way I see it, ASBaR is simply Frank Miller taking the piss out of all those extreme takes on the character that have come out over the years by taking them two or three steps further. The result is not only one of the most unique books on the stand but also by far one of the funniest. And oddly enough I actually feel the result is the same even if I'm wrong and Miller is in fact playing this completely straight because, sure, I would lose a fair amount of respect for the guy for messing it up so completely but the book would still be every bit as funny, unique and energetic even if it was all totally unintentional.

I'd say I like this comic because it makes fun of itself. Hell, this new issue has a centerfold. It's hilarious and brilliant. It's like Frank Miller and Jim Lee are purposely making this book pornography for fanboys.

I really think #4 sold me on the idea of Batman needing the Robin balance. In this title anyway.
Alfred seems to know that Batman is... well, batsh!t crazy. Dick sure knows it.
The solicit for #5 mentions that Dick will make a choice about how to handle the killer, maybe Bruce will learn from Dick in this title.
Forget tha Year One is in Millers continuity. It was in main continuity so it had to conform, but at the time it was easy to say, Yeah thats DKR Batman too! Whatever.
So, Millers Batman (maybe Holy Terror[Y1.5 according to Miller] will change the perspective of Batman towards a disregard for human life[maybe I'm reaching waaaaay to far]) and Dicks choice wakes Bruce up to the monster he has become. I really (hope) think Miller is writing Bats so over the top to really show the impact Robin will have on him. Otherwise whats the freakin point of having a 13 year old sidekick.
Frank said he felt no one ever really told the story of WHY Robin is Batmans sidekick. Maybe he means to show us the dramatic impact Robin will have. Can't have too much of an impact on a perfect human being with nothing to impact. Has anyone ever done anything that made Batman go: "huh, I never thought of that." No. At least not that I have seen. Thats what makes Batman great, he has all of the angles covered, he's always got a plan, and some cool devide to help.
I really think Frank knows what he's doing. It's us that don't. With the shipping delays, the very slow pacing(shipping delays only hurt the pacing) and the idea of really doing an oldschool monthly book by the seat off their pants, it's going to be a while before all of this makes sence. But it is starting to. Reading all 4 in one sitting helped a lot.
Supermans "15 hours ago" timeline makes way more sence after Dicks comment about being in the Batmoblie for days. Maybe they were really in there for a while. Black Canary is going to pop up later in the story, Frank just introduced her early, and kinda de railed the story we were reading. Again shipping problems are mostly to blame for this. Viki is being handled in #4, and I'm sure that will continue, Frank said she plays a big part in this book.
I'm totally wired on coffee right now, sorry about the giant post.
Very surprised to see the poll results in favor off people liking the book!:)

I finally got a chance to read it....and I like it!
I couldn't stop laughing. The dialog between Dick and Bats was priceless. Issue 3 was kinda boring though. And it would have been cool to see Dick eat some rats >_>
17 -I like the comic.
10 -I like the comic because I enjoy making fun of it.
10 -I don't like the comic.
8 -This comic is the sign of the apocalypse.
2 -This comic is horrible... but I buy it for the art.
To be fair, it's not really that most people like the comic because its a good comic... its just the reasons why not to like it are more varied... or its enjoyable to make fun of.
Its damn close, though. A lot closer than I expected.

I think the choices are a bit slanted. It's just "I like the comic..." Everything else seems more slanted to the negative. Theres no "I love the comic." option.
So there's 30 people who clearly don't enjoy the book and 10 people who just read it because they like dissing it. It's also interesting to note 33 people are probably still buying the book whether they enjoy it or not. And in the end that's the only reaction DC cares about.

I like it. I ain't afraid to admit it.
What's more, since Cronin isn't the mod here, I feel free to say I like All Star Batman and Robin, but also love Morrison's inspired All Star Superman.
I understand why people don't like it. I do. But Batman has never been one of my sacred cows and I'm enjoying the rather pointed deconstruction of both the insanity of the entire Batman concept and decompressed storytelling.
I think Jim Lee's figurework is a little off, but I love his attention to detail.

Well I'll tell you- I've been a huge Batman fan for years, and he's second in my eyes only to Dick Grayson. That being said, I still love the book. Then again, I've always had a dark sense of humor.
I love Lee's pencils but I think the inking and coloring really takes away from it.
Lastly, I agree with you 100% on All Star Superman. Really boring.

Yes, Morrison seems to be a bit of an aquired taste. The stuff I have read by him (JLA,X-Men), just never seemed to work for me either. Though I did like his treatment of Batman and Emma Frost. Otherwise I just found it too fantastical.
The reason I ask is, I'm trying to gage what his Batman will be like.

Now that I think of it, I guess I've never been a big Morrison fan. The one thing I'll always respect him for though, is making me like a character I always hated with a passion- Scott Summers. Emma was good too. Otherwise on X-men, his throw-away characters and kill-fest bored me. As for JLA, couldn't get into it after the first storyline.
btw, When does he start on Batman? I'm not up to date yet. I'm currently somewhere around Fugitive.
I voted that I liked the comic. Do I think it is amazingly well written? No. It is typical heavy handed over the top Frank Miller Batman. I find it to be entertaining. And I don't mind reading Miller's take on Batman. This isn't a regular Bat-title so I don't mind the difference in character. I look at it similar to an elseworlds title. Plus, I am loving Jim Lee's artwork.

I was suggested it by someone , and my local comic shop has a suggest sticky on it, but then I come here and everyone hates it so yeah idk, the art on it is really really nice, i liked Jim lees x-mens suff and i did like dark knight returns but idk if anyone could tell me. And also is dinis batman better at the moment or morrisons, I picked up detective 821 and thought it was great storywise read like a detective show kinda , the art wasnt my fav though but thats not as important, havent picked up batman though so i was wondering. thanks alott

It seems that here, either you hate it or you love it. The people that hate it say the writers just writing whatever he feels he can get away with, and that the whole story is absurd and Batman is completely out of character (slapping Robin, trying to make him eat rats, etc), not to mention the slow pace of the book.
The people who love it usually say it's a great parody on the Dark Knight or that it's so bad it's good.
I don't like it at all, because it's taken the writer 4 issues to show Robins parents getting killed, and Batman rescuing him from cops and driving him to the Batcave. I bought the first two issues, the first because i thought it was going to be about the early days of Batman and the first Robin with Jim Lee art but nothing really happened.

No offence but couldn't you have just used this forum's search facility to find this out? A new thread on All-star Batman and Robin seems to start up every week, it just seems unecessary. If you had searched your question would have been answered thoroughly due to the amount of debtae that has occured regarding this title. You've even referred to the fact that some people hate it, so surely those threads will be informative?
I'm not having a go, just these constant all-star threads are beginning to grate.
EDIT - this can now be ignored as the thread in question has been blended in to a larger ASB&R thread.

Its a satire, but IMO not an especially good one. Its veeery slow paced. Like, in 5 issues all they've done is driven from a circus to a batcave. I'll admit, Miller's ridiculously over the top take on the cliche he created is hilarious at points, but overall its just not funny enough to make up for the lack of any sort of action or plot movement whatsoever.
