My problem with morrison is that he is always pushing the envelope, writing complex, dark, interesting stories that you really feel he cares about and has thought about extensively. and batman is such a happy-go-lucky simple character that really has no deep dark side.

err. hmm. on second thought-sign me up.

I was excited about Morrison's Batman before I heard about the ninja Man-Bats. Now I'm drooling in anticipation.

Well I just read the solicit for September. And it looks as if Batman is bringing his long lost son home.

Now I know that the advanced solicits from DC are notorious for being wrong and different from the actual product that's put out. But I have to say that I really am floored by this news:

BATMAN #657
Writtenby Grant Morrison
Art by Andy Kubert & Jesse Delperdang
Cover by Kubert
Part 3 of the 4-part “Batman and Son,” by the incomparable team of writer Grant Morrison and artists Andy Kubert & Jesse Delperdang! Batman brings his son home to Gotham City and introduces him to both Wayne Manor and the Batcave! But when Batman’s new son meets Robin sparks — and swords — will fly!
On sale September 27 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

How we got to that from:

BATMAN #656

What do you get when you add one Batman, fifty Ninja Man-Bats and the British Prime Minister's wife? Welcome to a glittering night of mayhem among the rich and famous, as Batman faces down a whole army of winged horrors in a no-holds barred, bone-crunching superbrawl among the treasures of London's Pop Art museum. And when the Dark Knight's done, an even greater shock awaits, as we finally meet a startling NEW addition to the Batman family in "Man Bats of London

Is beyond me.

I just hope to high heaven that we are not going to be saddled with another spawn of satan story.

Though I am not generally a fan of Morrison, and the unconditional praise he receives from many segments of fandom rankles me immensely, his take on Batman sounds intriguing because Batman's going to London, and one of the aspects of Batman that I have always enjoyed, but unfortunately has been underplayed in recent years, has been the element of travel and exotic locales (except in BATMAN BEGINS, where he goes to the Himalayas). Batman SHOULD go to Paris and solve jewel thief mysteries.

Travel has been a part of Batman's legend, and it's a part of the bigger tradition of adventure characters that he's descended from and related to (Tarzan, Jonny Quest, James Bond).

I wonder if they will do anything special for that issue.. I hope they do!:evilsmile

Grants run sounds ok. But the whole Batmans son thing sounds like either, new boring Brdy Bunch continuity or another life changing story that leaves everything where it was.

I can't wait for Dini on Detective. TOo bad Williams is only doing two issues. At least he's doing two issues and one of them is the Riddler story!

I think it's a patchwork hybrid adaptation of a few silver age stories that I have read.

But I have read so many it's hard to piece the memories together.

You're both correct.

The X-Men books were confusing and primarily bad. A lot of peope liked them. A lot more hated them and the sales kept high primarily because fans of the books still supported the books regardless of whether they liked the stories themselve. There was also habit involved.

Then the X-Men comics got some direction. The confusion was nearly eliminated. The ongong subplots, meta-plots, and plotlines got tied up (that was the direction: get rid of stuff so King Grant of Morrison did not have to deal with it). That stuff was bad as well, if not worse. Colossus died in a story that had the same logic of... it doesn't make sense.

Right.

Then the Grant Morrison Era of X-Men Comics began. Grant Morrison's New X-Men was indeed interesting, somewhat original, and had a clear direction, sometimes. Unfortunately Grant Morrison wrote one title that not every one liked. Some of the issues were bad, in part for the scripting. Some outright sucked regardless of Morrison becase the artist was bleh. The entire run was damanged because the one regular penciller was decidedly irregular. All the metaphorical exlax in the world would not have gotten the art done on time.

The second title in the Grant Morrison Era of X-Men Comics was written by Joe Casey and it was terrible. The comics were bad and they stunk worse than his immediate predesessor's run. Joe Casey, in interviews, raised expectations to great. That he was paired with Morrison raised expectations to great. The run sucked, based on its own merits. Compared to Morrison's work it sucked. So he got kicked off. Chuck Austen took over and Marvel Comics took after 1984's Big Brother and pretended that Joe Casey's run never happened. Marvel Comics pretended that the Grant Morrison Era of X-Men Comics began in Uncanny X-Men not with Joe Casey but with Chuck Austen. Chuck Austen's run sold very well because it was Uncanny X-Men. The stories and subplots were worse than Joe Casey's.

Grant Morrison's New X-Men ended in a confusing and strange way.

Grant Morrison's penultimate chapter involved one of those things where we have a dozen X-Men yet we are forced to pretend that more than half of those X-Men don't exist and then when they exist again won't notice that the Mansion got destroyed again.... all so Morrison's story in New X-Men will work as it did.... kinda.

Ultimately Morrison told what many will consider to be good stories. Morrison told what a smaller amount of people whom I will also address as "many" would consider bad. Many people consider it technically good but ultimately unenjoyable. I am in category three.

You guys are both correct. Assuming that my words are accurate then the premise shall stand that Morrison's work was original, interesting, and had a clear direction but many will not agree to it being good, many others won't care, and a lot of people did not enjoy reading so many Grant Morrison New X-Men comics and overall the Grant Morrison Era of X-Men Comics caused a tad more damage than was worth for the good stories it delivered and in the long run it will be blip.

Until Marvel Comics files for Chapter Seven.
