4 issues = 160 pages? Really? I have #1 but I thought it was normal-sized. I hope I get a good discount on this from DCBS!

Jamie - I'm with you on that one. I haven't been playing too close attention to the book, but I didn't think they were any more pages than usual, either. But 160 pages is about 6 issues' worth of material. So either they meant to type "#1-6," or there's a LOT of backup material from Alex Ross they're reprinting, too.

Expletive - Darn skippy! I'm glad I waited on this one for a hardcover. . .

Yeah, it wouldn't be the 1st time there's been an error in the solicits.

Wait! I just checked April's Previews and issue # 6 was 40 pages! Are they really gonna make 3 HC's of this series?

It's Alex Ross. His fans pay $100 for a poster,er, sorry, lithograph.

Making this book into a three hardcover set is pennies for DC. And then they'll sell a box with new Ross art on it to wrap the three books in, for another $20. Or signed and numbered for $50.

I'm waiting for Absolute Justice and Absolute Infinite Crisis, because like you lads I know they'll show up eventually.

But I'll be buying Absolute New Frontier regardless of the discount - it was so good. And Darwyn Cooke was constantly mobbed at the recent Toronto con, so obviously lotsa folks enjoyed it.

(Absolute == the new Ultimate for comic lingo)

I don't - yet - own any of the Absolute editions. I don't feel the need to own the new Frank Miller one, and the LoEG ones are nice, but too much info for me.

I might consider a Justice one, but I have 1 question: How do you people store these things?!?! They are HUGE! They have to be too big for most bookshelves. I know I have a stack of Treasury Edition books that sit flat on top of a shelf, but I had to know what you guys did with these things. Do they sit on the floor?

They fit on my bookshelves - from Ikea! I have a slightly different beef - they are nearly impossible to read in bed.

I only own Absolute Authority, Absolute Hush and the Sin City libraries (which are the same size) but I did take the plunge on Absolute Kingdom Come. Absolute Crisis - didn't buy it b/c I own the first "never to be issued in trade or hc again" Crisis on Infinite Earths HC (DC are liars! LIARS!). Absolute Watchmen...I still plan on someday getting the Graffiti Designs HC. Absolute Dark Knight - I've got the Complete Frank Miller Batman. My only other real complaint - I don't mind buying a nice, expensive hard cover to replace single issues. It's just started to get a little annoying that it now seems like I'm having to decide if I want to buy a hardcover to replace another hardcover. Several years ago I was in negotiations with a comic store to give them my full run of Sandman in exchange for the hardcovers...glad I didn't now, b/c DC is releasing all the Sandman as Absolute editions! Bankruptcy could be in my future...LOL.

Jamie - My bookcase has adjustable shelves. It's divided into two halves. I have the right half set up with one shelf at about half height -- it gets used for a lot of manga books. And the bottom shelf, then, becomes extra tall and capable of taking on the ABSOLUTE volumes.

As I recall, I have WATCHMEN, PLANETARY, AUTHORITY, DANGER GIRL, LOEG1 and 2, and HUSH down there. Like Murray, I stayed the hell away from CRISIS because I already bought the Absolutely Positively Final HC version of the book -- and I hated it anyway. ;-)

I don't think I'll be getting the DARK KNIGHT RETURNS book, but I am ordering KINGDOM COME. Might do it through Amazon, though. We'll see...

Thankfully, I never got into SANDMAN, so I can skip those books, as tempting as the format is to give it another try.

Those extra-tall shelves are also handy for Marvel's hardcovers and various European reprint hardcovers, not to mention DC's one-time flirtation with the Treasury Edition books, e.g. Paul Dini/Bruce Timm's books a few years back.

God bless you guys! I kind of like the idea of the BIGGER pages but it's like buying the super-director's cut of a DVD. How much of that stuff are ya really gonna watch? Most of the time I hardly get around to it. I'd rather watch, er.. read more story. They are cool though.

Roach - yeah, be careful with those books on top of you in bed. You could kill yourself!

Side Note - I do love Treasury books. Must have all Marvel Treasure books! I almost have all the Marvel Graphic Novels from the 80-90's! :D

The Marvel/DC (even First and Eclipse used it) Graphic Novel format from the 1980s is something I'd love to see come back. The good stuff from each of the 4 compaines - Death of Captain Marvel, Love & War, Sabre, Time2, and whatever the Garcia-Lopez DC book was, were beautiful and really deserving of a different format. Honestly, I only remember a couple of the Marvel ones being crap - most were incredibly well done. (Or, at least most of the ones I have were!)

More about the JUSTICE HC:

This first volume of three contains expanded character bios and sketches.

That's what I was afraid of. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed paying extra for all the filler material in the back of the SECRET WARS hardcover.

And I was right about signed and numbered editions: Dynamic Forces IS doing one for this book. But of course.

PRIDE OF BAGHDAD HARDCOVER
Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Art and cover by Niko Henrichon
From one of America's most acclaimed comics writers - a startlingly original look at life on the streets of Baghdad during the Iraq War inspired by true events.
In his award-winning work on Y: THE LAST MAN and EX MACHINA (one of Entertainment Weekly's 2005 Ten Best Fiction titles), writer Brian K. Vaughan has displayed an understanding of both the cost of survival and the political nuances of the modern world. Now, in this provocative graphic novel, Vaughan examines life on the streets of war-torn Iraq. The experience is made all the more evocative by the lush, spectacular artwork of Niko Henrichon (BARNUM!).
In the spring of 2003, a pride of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid. Lost and confused, hungry but finally free, the four lions roamed the decimated streets of Baghdad in a desperate struggle for their lives. In documenting the plight of the lions, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD raises questions about the true meaning of liberation - can it be given, or is it earned only through self-determination and sacrifice? And in the end, is it truly better to die free than to live life in captivity?
Based on a true story, Vaughan and Henrichon have created a unique and heartbreaking window into the nature of life during wartime, illuminating this struggle as only the graphic novel can.

Definitely a Lithograph. Posters cost about £4. (I don't think there's any other difference)

I don't own that many hardcovers yet - Invincible Vol. 1, The Walking Dead Omnibus Vol. 1 and all of the Q&C books - so they are just randomly placed on one of my bookcases. Luckily, I have an IKEA bookcase (or three to be precise) and they have adjustable shelves.

Man... I've got to get to an Ikea. I have 2 of these "Detolf" shelves that display my Bowen mini-busts and statues and I've been planning on getting 1-2 more because my collection of those is growing. Maybe I'll snag some of these shelves while I'm there, as I do need a new bookshelf.

Do you guys know what the name of your adjustable bookshelf is?

I also gotta see if I can get another glass display case to put my new Namor statue when it gets here. He's 15 1/2" tall and my cases are only 14"!

D'oh!

Crap - I forgot the JLA/Avengers book. That was an ABSOLUTE edition, wasn't it?

My bookshelf was a Christmas present, but I think it came from Staples or Office Max/Depot. It's about seven feet high and five feet wide. I'd need at least two more of them to make me happy right now. If I could learn to sleep on the floor, I could move the bed out and put the new cases there! Whatta geek that would make me. . .

I have a friend that (until the time he got married) kept his comics in their own room and sleft on his futon/couch in the living room.

Yes, the comics had their own room to sleep in and he didn't. :)

Augie De Blieck Jr.

I would do that, too, if it were possible. To me, it sounds like a perfectly reasonable solution to a space issue. Cheaper than a self storage unit, too.

I'm a complete geek, aren't I?

Heh, there's an ad at the bottom of this page right now for bookcases. . .

Right now, my comics have their own room. And it's a big room. And my wife only makes cracks about "cleaning up the comic room" once a month or so. Closet full of long boxes, bookshelf, and desk + double bed covered with comics. Not pretty, but hey, I'm a busy guy - cleaning the comic room ain't high on the list!

My room is pretty neat right now, but I've been organizing for a while and I've got some stacks on the floor of the living room. Plus some unread stuff out there too. And I'm due a new DCBS box today...

If never ends!

Oh - I also have about 10 full-size statues and maybe 60+ mini's in various cases in the living room. Nope, no wife, but girlfriend who doesn't mind. ;)

That's one of the Billy's I've got, yeah - just not white in colour. Ikea always amazes me because the stuff is inexpensive yet does what you need it to.

I almost bought one of those glass cases to put DVDs in but my wife had an alternative plan. They're good products too. (Guess I need to start a statue collection so I can get one!)

Gotcha. I'll have to look at the other colors.

Dude, be careful with the statues. They are very addictive! I just got the Bowen Dr. Strange one and the Namor one and the white Moon Knight ones are on the way! Plus, I just scored a Beast, Sinister, Absorbing Man and Attuma arrived last week too. The Scarlet Spider is gonna ship soon and I may score a Red Skull and a Deadpool.

I need help... and a 2nd job... and a bigger house....

I need something taller, unless you can stack the Billy shelves one on top of the other. Plus, it almost looks like a waste of space. If you could add one more shelf in there, it might work great for me.

But, hey, if it works for you, please don't let me rain down on your parade. . .

Augie (or anyone else):

Do you think they'll trade the Infinite Crisis Specials at all (maybe along w/ the IC Secret Files)? I'm assuming that they probably won't since there is no mention of it for the rest of the year and they've already solicited Infinite Crisis HC.

Take a look at the Ikea site and search "Billy." There are more varieties that just that one. Some are taller, and there's a DOUBLE tall one too!

Augie De Blieck Jr.
05-17-2006, 12:23 PM
SixString - I honestly don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised. There's so much CRISIS material they have to cover, they might not be able to get to everything. However, they've been good at trading a lot of the stuff leading up to it.

In other words -- I don't know. It doesn't look good, though, since -- as you say -- it's not included in the publishing plans through December.

Jamie - Thanks. I'll go take a look at the other models, then. There's still hope...

Six and a half feet tall, nearly nine feet across. . .

It still wouldn't be enough, but it would be more than what I have now, and I think I could "settle" for it. Yeah, two along one wall would be even nicer, but let's not go crazy just yet. . . I need a place big enough for that kind of thing first.

They are covering 3 of the 4 available walls in our second bedroom, and we have two more on order. I'll see if I can attach a picture - of course, you can't really appreciate them, because they are crammed to capacity, and there's more boxes of books on the floor in front of them. ::sigh::

They work quite well, are very sturdy, and actually function as viable bookshelves, not like the crap we brought at a shall-be-nameless discount store that started to bend in the middle the instant we put real books on them.

But yeah, I'm all about the ladders and the marble floors and the singing and the books. ;)

That's pretty much along the lines of what I've got. I've got three 60cm wide ones and one 80cm one. All of them are the tall versions with the extension on top which I think are what you can see in that picture

Each bookcase (not including the exctension) has the middle shelf in a fixed position, so in each half you can get either three shelves tall enough for most american and the less huge european books, or four shelves for manga sized books (though I think you'd need to buy extra shelves for that).
