DC announced their list of trades and hard cover books that will be coming out in the next few months. In that list was a special surprise.
DCU titles scheduled to arrive in stores in October include:

ABSOLUTE DC: THE NEW FRONTIER HC
Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
Collects DC: THE NEW FRONTIER #1-6, plus a pinup gallery, deleted story pages and more
$75.00, 464 pages
Check out the announcement, and the other trades, here (http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1975994).

I have yet to buy any of the Absolute HCs because of their cost. But I will gladly shell out the money for Cooke's NF! Whoo-hoo!

Every time I say I'm not going to buy any more Absolute editions, DC pulls me back in with something like this. I will definitely be buying this but I will not pay anywhere near the $75 price as listed here, even if I have to wait several years to get it.

Stupid question, what is this Frontier about?

Agentum;

The series was an epic DC super-hero crossover reminiscent of Kingdom Come and The Golden Age. Like The Golden Age, it sought to tell a story which bridged the gap between the end of the golden and the start of the silver age of comic books in the DC Universe.

The series was also an Elseworlds story, which unlike its similar predecessors, broke with standard canon in one important respect from the outset. The story was clearly set in the late 1950s (with a cameo by President Eisenhower and references to the atomic testing of that era) and presented Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and their contemporaries' as active since the late 1930s and early 1940s, when their original stories were first published.

Then during the course of the story, these now much older characters encounter the new 1950s generation of heroes, such as the Barry Allen Flash and the Martian Manhunter, without reference to the concept of Earth 1 and Earth 2 which were introduced in the original comics (see Crisis on Infinite Earths for more on these concepts).

The star of the story was the young pilot Hal Jordan, who by the end of the series had become the new Green Lantern. Other characters that appeared in the book included King Faraday, the original Suicide Squad, the Challengers of the Unknown, Green Arrow, Wildcat and Slam Bradley among many others.

The plot of the series concerned the mounting threat of an alien presence on Earth, with the final issue featuring dozens of characters fom the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s eras of DC Comics teaming up to defeat the threat.

Great, now I'm torn. I was debating picking up the trades, but I was annoyed they split it into two volumes. Now they're releasing a complete edition and I can't stop wincing at the price (especially when you think Canadian prices...) so really I'll have to dwell on it...

Can you order from Discount Comic Book Service (http://dcbservice.com/)? They'll likely have it at 40% off cover price.

You know, that makes a lot of sense (no wonder I didn't think of it), I'll have to look into it. I haven't really gotten into the habit of buying things online yet so it rarely occurs to me to look there first. Thanks for the link.

I never heard about pages being excised from the trades, but Cooke has said online that there was material he had conceived but couldn't fit into the issues, and which he would gladly complete to put in a collected edition.

That's pretty cool. But I don't think that I would want to pay that much just to get those pages. Besides, the oversized hardcover isn't going to fit well on my bookshelf.

For 48 extra pages?

I am all over this. New Frontier was, by far, one of the best superhero comics of recent years. His recent Solo issue was also fan-freaking-tastic.

I like those $75 Absolutes since it usually translates to $45-$50 online.

Sweeet. Say what you will about their current output, the folks behind DC's collected editions have really been on the ball lately. Lots and lots of great stuff coming out.

I think I may be the only one totally and 100% underwhelmed by this.

I thought the comics themselves were boring and I hated the story.

No way I'm shelling out that kind of money when there are better things DC could reprint (IMO of course) than this drek.

You may still hate it, but try re-reading it again and seeing if you like it any more the second time. Worth a shot.

I think I may be the only one totally and 100% underwhelmed by this.I wouldn't say anything as absolute as you're the "only one" not interested in this. There's probably, at most, 5 people out there who feel the same way. :)

Thanks for the heads up. I have to think that it's a mistake, but I also pre-ordered it in the event that it's not since I don't think anyone is going to be able to beat that price.

Cant wait for this to be released.
I love the absolute editions and have recently ordered/purchased the Kingdom Come
Dark Knight Returns/DK2
Crisis On Infinite Earths
Batman: Hush
and Watchmen ones even though I already own all of those in singles (except Kingdom Come).
They are nice to read in one sitting, full of extras, look great on the shelf AND save my original singles from wear and tear.
Thank you D.C.

Somebody needs to grab a screenshot if a comic book ends up topping "The Da Vinci Code" on the weekend that its movie opens.

Either DC or Amazon are going to be losing a ton of money at this price. Most TPB collections are more expensive than that.

And the best part is you can order it now for this ridiculously low price and not be charged until it ships in several months.

I'm pretty sure they won't honor that price. From their "Conditions of Use" page:

With respect to items sold by Amazon.com, we cannot confirm the price of an item until you order; however, we do NOT charge your credit card until after your order has entered the shipping process. Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items in our catalog may be mispriced. If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will, at our discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation.
