Do you think the invention of the Internet is a major reason for the rise of obesity? I know bigger portions of food, video games, longer work hours, and lack of exercise are the main factors but I can't help think all the hours people spend on the net whether it's chatting, researching, paying bills, downloading, etc. Myself I've skipped the gym numerous times because I just wanted to spend my leisure time on the internet. What do you think?

I'm not a doctor but I think it's the general lack of exercise people get.

Yeah. That and poor dietary (dietary is a word, right?) choices.

yeah, but see what he's getting at is the "general lack of exercise" can be attributed to heavy internet use, amongst other things. I doubt anyone is using thier ThighMaster while they browse 8-Bit Theater or what have you.

But then what about people who aren't fat, but are still using the internet alot?

Internet-induced-inactivity may count for a few cases of obesity, but I think there are probably some other factors that contribute a bit more.

TV was more or less the same as the Internet in the pre-Net era. The term "couch potato" isn't a neologism of the online age.

It's a ridiculous argument really. Weight gain (for the most part) is attributed to a lack of exercise and lazyness. What a person chooses to do instead of those 2 things isn't to blame

I didn't say it was the only cause, but I'd definately say it can account for a portion of general inactivity in an internet-user's life. Hell, if internet-induced inactivity were the sole cause of obesity in any persons life, it'd be mine - yet i'm 6'1' 140 lbs soaking wet. It's the combo of poor diet and inactivity that'd make ya fat, not really one or the other.

Ah, Ok. I can dig it.

Current trends in lifestyle and dietary habit is the main factor for the growing crisis of overweight/obesity, worldwide. While the internet can provide many resources for staying fit, some people of course only exercise their fingers or minds for hours on end.

I actually did an article (http://www.shoutwire.com/comments/9015/This_Week_in_Science_Chewing_the_Fat) on obesity subject, with some pretty useful links, if anyone is interested.

Or in many cases their right arm.

Or in many cases their right arm.

Looks at how much more definition her right arm has in comparison to her left and snickers.
