In a bold move, the DC editors decide to ax Lois Lane and find a new superheroine love interest for Clark/Supes, breaking 70 years of tradition.
Do you think the Superman books could survive without Lois or has she become as much part of the mythos as the "S" symbol in his chest?

I think there is a big chance they could.

There are some things in this universe that you can't touch, and Lois being Superman's true love is one of those.
Without Lois, you can't have a Superman. She's his connection to humanity and I think she humanizes him more than anyone else.
Lois will always be apart of Superman's life, regardless.

Superman could survive without Lois. I doubt it'll ever happen, though.

Oh hell yeah. The marriage seems to be binding at this point though, and the stories aren't too bad. Gail Simone did a decent job from what I read, and Busiek and Johns appear to be making it work. Lois isn't essential, but she's not a hinderance right now, as far as I can tell.
I think the superman books would be even better without Lois

Yes most probably.
I'm tired of her really and it would open more possibilitys without her to rescue all the time.
BUT i don't think anything wil change ever, but i don't read this books anyway.

She would be gone for awhile and then the books would return to the status quo. I would love to see DC introduce a new heroine that could meet Kal on every level that isn't WW. I think it would make for some interesting stories.

I've said for a very long time that one of the things that defines Superman is the fact that he has many possible girlfriends and that any one of them is a possible match for him. The Superman books would not suffer or have something "missing" if Superman was to, say, pursue Lori Lemaris, or Lana, or any of the endless women that Superman has attracted or found attractive.
There are some things in this universe that you can't touch, and Lois being Superman's true love is one of those.
The idea that Superman and Lois are "meant for each other" or "soul mates" is a very modern idea. Note for instance, the running subplot of Superman and Lana getting together - a plot so hot and heavy that if it was allowed to continue, MIGHT have resulted in a Super-Marriage of a very different kind. At the same time, Lois was strengthened all the more by her subplot, which was that she no longer WANTED to be "Superman's Girlfriend" and started taking up Klurkor and so forth.
Actually, Elliot S! Maggin back in the 1980s had the idea of killing off Lois Lane and having Superman run around with a few alien babes. Thankfully, he didn't, however, it would have been interesting to see what Maggin, then at the peak of his creative powers, could have done.

In the Golden age she hated Clark and loved Superman and in Silver age she was just after to expose his secret identity.
We really need a Ultimate Superman whitout all this old baggage to read about:D
Lois Lane's as much of an Icon as Superman at this point, so you could take her out of the comic books, but you'd never be able to take her out of the mythos. So she'd be back at some point.

Agreed...
I don't see why it would be a problem to return her to the "friend/coworker/pest" category where she actually belongs...

I believe that at various times the Spider-Man books have gone for years without Mary Jane, the Batman books have gone for years without Catwoman (or just an occasional meeting with her), and Wonder Woman has gone for years without Steve Trevor (remember him?). So I figure Superman has enough staying power to go for years without Lois Lane.
I agree, however, with those who feel it's highly unlikely that this theory will be put to the test. Even if they retcon the marriage to get rid of it one of these days, I doubt they'll throw out the character concept of Lois Lane entirely. Just change her to make her fit into whatever new niche they have in mind for a female member of Superman's supporting cast.

As a fan, I'd say that the short answer is "Yes. Someday."
But not today, and not for a goodly while yet. The relationship as is has a lot of mileage left in it.
