I watched this show in the early 90's, when it was on PBS, and recently watched the whole thing on DVD, including lots of shows I'd never seen.
GOOD GOD it is funny.
As the years progress it goes from being a sitcom, to being a funny action adventure show, to being a downright touching serio-comic show.
Did anyone else ever watch this?

It shows up in the avatar contest fairly regularly, so I think it has a decent fanbase around here. I've only sprung for the first four seasons of DVDs so far myself. I used to watch those full-season-in-one-night marathons on BBC America a couple years ago.

Yeah I watched on PBS as a little kid. Sometimes I couldn't understand Lester because of that rough British accent. My favorite episode was the Backwards planet. When Cat tried to urinate, and it went back in him, made me laugh so hard.

Indeed. He was doing a 'number two'.

Oddly, we were talking about that very scene at dinner last night.

I watched the first 2 episodes to see what the hype was about.
And that left me more confused than ever, and painfully unable to go on with more. Didn't get it all. The evolved cat, the hologram who needed an "H" on his forehead to remind people he was a hologram (as bad as Star Trek: Voyager was, at least they did well with their hologram!)... maybe it's a cultural thing, but then again, one of my favourite comedies ever is "Spaced".

Nah, I think it's more a "Humor isn't universal," thing. Spaced is a good example. Watched a couple episodes, though it was okay but wasn't interested enough to bother checking out any more. I love Red Dwarf, but for my money Black Books is the funniest Britcom ever.

I heard that often as well, and everybody told me that if I liked Spaced, I'd enjoy Black Books as well.
Same thing as Red Dwarf, only I couldn't get through the first episode.
Definately right, though, humour isn't universal, which isn't a bad thing at all.

Well, Spaced is my favourite sitcom, I love Black Books and the first 6 series of Red Dwarf were fantastic. Maybe I bridge the gap here.
Sing it with me:

Some dude at my comic shop told me that their was another Red Dwarf like show that he'd seen in England, with some of the same cast, but it was set in the middle ages, and they were all peasents.
Any ideas what this is?

The only thing I can think of is a kid's TV show with Danny John Jules called "Maid Marion & Her Merry Men" back in the early nineties. Pretty good for a kid's show.

Love this show! It's so delightfully twisted - and it has a guy called "Rimmer!" (Where are Bevis & Butt-head when you need them?!?):p

Unfortunately the show kind of fizzled in the last two seasons and is on indefinite hiatus.
However, the new "Doctor Who" has generated a new interest in sci-fi in Britain so it's possible we might see something down the line.

I hope they don't do an American version... I seriously doubt any comedy troupe assembled could match the ensemble in "Dwarf." That team was genius.

They already tried and American version back in the 90s, Robert Llewelyn was going to reprise his Kryten role. It was going to be on NBC. It made it to a pilot and wasn't picked up. Thank god.

Oh my god. I totally know what bootleg I need to look for at ComicCon this year!

You really don't want to see the US pilot. I finally tracked it down last year on DVD.
It's bad, all I remeber of the american cast is Teri Farrel as the Cat. That should let you know how they treated the concept. Almost the same script as The End though.
