View Full Version : The all purpose 90's Disney cartoon Nostalgia thread

For those of us who were kids around the time :p

I recently re-watched a whole batch (some 40 :p) Darkwing Duck episodes, and I've got to say: It's pretty good, even if you discount the nostalgia factor. They manage to throw more references to all sorts of heroes (James Bond, Marvel & DC heroes, etc. etc.) as well as a bunch of trends in comics (retcons are given quite a few little nods.... Like Negaducks conflicting origin....) I also think the adopted father/daughter relationship is pretty sweet (Gosalyn is a perfect caricature of a certain kind of hyperactive child :p)

I'm sometimes surprised at the "level" of some jokes in these cartoons: Rescue Rangers had quite a few references to old films that the kids couldn't *possibly* have seen....

I've heard that "Gargoyles" has something of cult-status in the US (though I've never seen it, it never aired over here) we just had Gummy Bears, Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Rescue Rangers & Ducktales...

But an entertaining rehashed & poultrified Inspector Gadget.

I enjoyed Talespin. It had comedy, adventure, and not a single annoying character on that show.

Naw, they were very different really. I really don't get the resemblance at all.

Also, D&W usually didn't have those cheesy morality-lesson at the end.

I swear you will not regret it. Simply the best animated show ever.

Oh, this thread begins and ends with Gargoyles. As much as I loved all the others, they were more about taking old characters and putting new spins on them. Gargoyles was great because it was just a totally original concept, and one that wasn't afraid to tackle issues and themes that would be appreciated by older audiences. Starting with a female cop as the lead character who was half black/half native american! I loved how they would have episodes acknowledging both cultures, so it didn't feel like it was just a cosmetic choice.

And the Gargoyles themselves, they were just fantastic. I think Brooklyn was my favorite.

The mythology of the series was just fantastic, incorporating MacBeth and even King Arthur and Avalon.

After that, my top three goes:

3.Darkwing Duck
2.Talespin
1.Ducktales

No, Gadget was far more predictable and formulaic than Darkwing. And Darkwing didn't always fight the same villain. Also, you really can't compare Gosalyn to Penny, they have completely different personalities.

Duck Tales suffered of having the Carl Barks shadow all over it. While still good, the series pales a bit compared to the Barks stories that inspired it.

That's a little like saying "The Ten Commandments" pales in comparison to the Bible... probably true but a little unfair to the adaptaion. :)

All the trouble we get in
With another tale to spin

When you're in it
You can win it

I always liked the setting of TaleSpin (That's another thing, it was clearly set in a very "interwar" setting, more or less, how could kids get the references?) And I thought it was relaly cool.

And Jim Cummings *rocks* as a voice-actor as rightfully pointed out. He did MINSC for chrissakes too!

It was a great cartoon. I wonder when it'll be released on DVD.

Also, I loved Aladdin and Return of Jafar. Has anyone seen Aladdin and the King of Thieves ? I've been dying to rent it. I don't care if it's bad.

I have. It's not too bad. John Rhys-Davies is pretty good as... no, that would be telling.

Yeah, Loved the "Life the Negaverse and Everything" episode.... Also love his penchant for elaborate ways of killing the hero.

Pretty good for a Disney Video. Managed to close out the Aladdin saga perfectly.

Except the Lion King II, which was only god for the villainess song, that was just evil :p

Plus it brought back Robin Williams - a PR move (which included an apology after screwing him out of money) no one thought Disney would ever do. (Though Dan C. had taken over the Genie role very damn well in RoJ and the animated series)
