View Full Version : WWE RAW rEVIEW: " Of Course You Know...This means WAR ! "

Its gonna be a good week for RAW it appears. The whole ECW Angle is expected to launch this week. So who knows where it'll go. Lets get to Da News.
TNA is looking to sell the last remaining tickets for thier debut in Philadelphia on June 9th. Also TNA is scouting sites in New Jersey for a possible show June 10th ! Tickets will go on sale for the UWF/TNA shows in Mooresville & Greensboro , NC on May 26th and 27th. People in those areas...TNA is coming to town and the dates appear to be increasing.
Batista was at a MCW show recently and was reportedly in great shape and said he was coming back soon.
Its being said that there is a steel cage at RAW tonight and that Tommy Dreamer is at the show.
Onto RAW.
The Good: RAW opens with HHH demanding his 2,698,452,100 title shot at the belt. You know the usual....." He's the King of Kings " , he's the " Game " ect ect ect...John Cena joins us as they start dissin each other. Crowd is split as usual.
Vince joins us before an impromptu Title match can happen as HHH and Cena campaign thier causes. HHH mocks Cena as a " Poser " and Cena claims he is one. And starts doing his victory poses he did over HHH ! Then he starts doing body builder poses. Vince finally makes the match....except not for tonight.
HHH relunctantly leaves 1st and Cena does his usual stuff. Vince goes to make a Cena/HBK vs the Spirit Squad handicap match for tonight. Cena goes to tell Vince he can just kiss his ass as his mic gets cut. The IC Title match is annouced next by Vinnie Mac.
On his way down RVD runs straight into John Cena. Rob Van Dam gives Cena the message " I'm Next " as Cena achknowlodges it. Ross sells it. Rob however cuts a promo as he's pissed at what happened to Joey Styles and claims that Joey was right. He's tired of Sports Enertainment !
Fans start to boo but realize...hey we like this guy. So they start an ECW chant which Rob wants. He wants an ECW chant for Joey and himself. This is a Fatal Fourway match as Charlie Haas , Chris Masters and Shelton Benjimen are involved. Well....3 outta 4 ain't bad I suppose.
The match starts quickly and fast. Its a solid match I think and showcases the athletism of the 3 good guys ( Benjimen/RVD/Haas) and Ross calls it good. Least now Jim Ross has finally reached his personal Mecca as an annoucer now. He can call a man a Hoss as much as he pleases ! RVD wins as usual in a great fashion. Fans are happy.
Now comes the wierd... out comes Edge for his hardcore war with Mick Foley ! Foley however annouces he has a great match in store for Edge as its a Hardcore ECW style match and who better than the " Innovator of Violence Tommy Dreamer !! ". Tommy comes out and the 2 act close but I smell trouble ahead. No spoilers read today..I just saw it. ( my mind clicks back to when Foley turned on Tommy in ECW. Never trust Cactus Jack...as the sayin goes...)
Foley turns and both Edge and Foley leave Tommy in a pool of blood. The final insult was it was Foley who was close to ECW. Edge mocks Tommy as he leaves as you know...THIS MEANS WAR. Theres no way Tommy lets the ECW colors be spit on and he's gonna f-ck Edge up and bring Sandman ! Watch and see.
Fans are split as usual on this. They like Foley and some still cheer but those cheering ECW boo. The anger is there ..this a WAR and there will be BLOOD. Tommy will eithor fued with Edge or Foley going into ECW:ONS.
The whole Carlito/Matt Striker deal tonight seemed to serve setting up the Striker/Eugene fued. Thier gonna have to decide what thier gonna do here with Carlito. He doesn't seem to have a fued or program open right now.
Cena at least gets cheered over the SS team. Having Shawn Micheals across from him won't hurt. Decent match as I only can knock the SS for the crappy gimmick but not being uber talented kids. One is 20 years old ! Thats pretty incredible.
Also wierd is how far Cena's stock in the company is falling. In this match he as the WWE Champion isn't book stronger than Micheals ! Isn't that a hoot...a guy in his 20's and is WWE Champion is booked weaker than the guy who is in his 40's and supposedly past his peak ? At least they saved Cena from getting nailed with the belt and being whipped like a GOVERNMENT MULE!!!
Cena makes the save finally on Micheals and HHH shows up and lays an ass kickin down on Cena. Then does the DX ..SUCK IT cross chop !Show ends as HHH stands tall as he walks up the ramp and is on his throne it appears.
The Bad :
Backstage we see 3 B-Movie stars who will odds are be fighting for the starring role in the next Reginald Hudlin House Party movie. Or be on a crappy cable show soon. Hot babe 1 is such a bad actress she breaks her damn charactor 2 seconds after her words! Yes..give that woman an Oscar !
Stupied dude 1 starts talking about Kane and May 19th. He's pretty lame as well. I can see why Kane is the star in this but the WWE machine has put such a horrible storyline around May 19th I think the movie will do worse than expected.
Kane then has a crappy match with Big Show to futher sell May 19th .
OVERALL: **** outta 5. We had 2 decent matches RAW wise with Cena/HBK facing the Spirit Squad , RVD/Masters/Benjimen/Haas in a Fatal Fourway for the IC Title and a heel turn by Mick Foley! Thats a pretty good RAW and sets the table for next week as more ECW Invasion beings. :evilsmile

I just dont feel Foley's heel turn. Maybe if they build it up then have him turn when it heads close to ONS then yeah but his heel turn felt forced to me.

Yes they do , and if you don't have anything good to contribute , why bother to post ?
There will always be people watching WWE.
RVD have to lose that IC title soon enough , either to Haas , Masters or Benjamin in the upcoming weeks. Good to see Haas having a match on RAW , so far this has been his biggest push since he became a single competitor.

Foley is a good promo cutter though and if he's on...he's on. I think we could see him come out and just cut something intense on ECW next and Tommy Dreamer.
The ECW angle is slowly launching as we see. By the end the entire show may have an ECW InVasion feel as RVD will face John Cena. It only makes sense that the heart and soul of ECW launch the angle and thats Tommy. I mark for Tommy because he's the f'n man. Someone need to take an ass kicking for Extreme Championship Wrestling ? Tommy Dreamer will. Because he's the f'n man. :D

Does anyone know how I can send an e-mail or something to Mick Foley?
It's sad how some stupid journalists in this country want him blacklisted from the Philippines... yeesh. I wanted to let him know that not everyone feels that way, and hell, a majority don't.

Let's see..the Foley heel turn got NO and I mean NO KIND OF crowd reaction. No cheers, no boos, nothing. Just silence. Another Cali crowd not giving a flying f**k about Foley. Happened at Taboo Tuesday last year too. If he was gonna turn, it should of been against the ECW guy that the WWE fans love like RVD. Would of gotten a legit reaction.
Carlito punks out Eugene and gets cheered for it.
Kane and Big Show work a "technical" match but Kane goes crazy as sounds of May 19 go over the arena. Comedy more than anything. Christina Vidal looked GREAT though!
Mickie James=WOW. Great smile, great body, great character, and a great ass. She carrys the often pathetic Maria to something sustainable and destroys her. The crowd pops for her and faintly chant Let's go Mickie. Beth Phoenix shows up and starts an angle with Mickie until Trish is patched up from her injury.
RVD vs Haas vs Masters vs Benjamin pretty much has 3 good workers in there with a one slow boring one. Benjamin takes Haas' head off with a Dragon kick...my favorite part of the match. RVD wins with the sunset flip over the top though. Nice match. RVD is gonna have to lose the belt before next month though. Should be interesting how that happens.
A decent Raw nothing great and nothing for the crowd to get hyped for. 7/10 for the IC title match and Mickie just being Mickie.

A Foley heel turn kind of makes no sense--just because the crowd is going to cheer for him anyway. We all know it. So, whatever.
Wow, lifetime OVW divas, first Shelly and now Beth finally make their debut in the WWE! WWE finally bringing in some wrestling girls instead of signing more diva search girls. At first I thought Beth was Ashley.
I liked the fatal fourway. Best match of the night.
That Big Show/Kane trying to wrestle a "technical" match was kind of weird. Are they trying to get the crowd to chant "May 19th?" If so, the crowd isn't biting.
Why is the SPIRIT SQUAD in the MAIN EVENT--seemingly every week? That's totally ridiculous.

They may turn Foley like Heyman did in ECW. I could see Mick with his hair slicked back , new teeth in claiming Edge is the new master of Hardcore. Teaming with Edge will help Mick turn heel. Because Mick could claim.. " Edge is the only one to get more hardcore than me. And that includes you Tommy Dreamer ! "

I agree. It's been years since anyone saw Dreamer on WWE. Most people who weren't fans of ECW, or weren't watching WWE during the Invasion thing don't even know who he is. Foley teaming with Edge caused a WTF? but yeah, they should have had him turn on someone that the fans know so they could get more of a reaction. Oh well, it pissed off ECW fans, and that was the goal I guess, but there are other former ECW guys. Hell, they could have brought in Benoit for a suprise appearance. They aren't doing anything with Benoit on Smackdown anyway.

While Benoit did spend time at ECW , he's hardly known for his ECW stay. I do hope with the seriously understaffed main event spots for smackdown wrestlers , Benoit should stay at smackdown and challenge for the world title. Angle is out , Randy is suspended , Batista is still out , Rey will be out once he loses the title as he is currently wrestling injured , smackdown is not having a lot of main eventers. (pls don't mention Mark Henry , JBL & Great Khali)

Was it just me, or was the crowd dead all night? I mean, the face pops where lukewarm at best. RVD comes out and asks for an ECW chant, and he gets a lame on for less than a minute. Carlito's pop is about the same. Trips's reaction was mixed as usual, but not very loud. And Cena got his sqeals, but hardly any boo's. It was like the crowd didn't care.
Anyway, I thought it was a decent Raw. Tommy looked damn good, he must be getting in shape, as last time I saw him he was pretty chunky. The turn was out of left field, but I'm optimistic. Mick said in his column that he only came back cause he had an idea, took it to Vince, and Vince loved it, so this is's all Mick. Might be we see the return of the anti-hardcore Mick that was so damn awesome in ECW. Mick has always said that while he loved ECW, he considers himself a WWE guy. And the Funker is suppose to be coming in to work with him, maybe Mick/Edge vs Dreamer/Funk? Next week will be the important part, as Mick will have to sell this turn on the mic. But I'm confident he can.
Anyway, nothing to insulting. The Kane bit with the actors was pointless but short. Kane vs Show was strange. An old school wrestling match between those two? Someone elsewhere described it as "80's wrestling at 150% scale and 50% speed". Mickie/Maria was okay. Maria didn't screw up and mickie was dominate like she shouold be, and we're getting another girl who can work, so thats good. I think the Spirit Squad is funny as hell, so I dug the main event. and the show burn into the reformation of DX is going along well.
And in a good 4 way match, and a decent Carlito/Stryker match, and not to shabby.

Did anyone else find it uncomfortable when RVD was cutting his speech, and the crowd was chanting "ECW" and RVD still felt the need to spend a couple minutes explaining to the crowd that he would like them to chant "ECW".
It reminded me of those times wrestler's blatantly try to get the crowd to chant, example:
TRIPLE H: I don't care if these stupid people in the crowd chant "R-V-D!"
except in this case the crowd had been doing it for the last three minutes anyway.

That's what happens when there's a crappy promo guy out there who can't think on his feet and who isn't listening. Compare it to JBL at the Main Event show when he started ripping on the local politicians to get heel heat and the crowd started agreeing with him and he quickly blamed them for electing them and they started boo'ing him again.

I suspect that RVD had his lines to get through, and he just went through them. Of course, whoever wrote the lines for him should be shot for not being smart enough to figure out that the crowd would chant ECW on their own, considering that's pretty much what crowds will do when RVD's out there.

RVD is downright horrible when doing pre-written promos. He's fine in interview and when he has to shoot off the hips, but he's just so awkward looking when he has to recite words that are so obviously canned. He definitely should have ad-libbed it a bit when the crowd started to chant ECW.

i don't understand why people say the spirit squad gimmick is stupid, if it gets the fans to boo them(and it does)then the gimmick is fine(and it is). what i'm most liking about RAW right now is umaga/A.A.E and matt striker. umaga did a great sqaush on those 2 jobbers and the chop he laid into that kid had some bass in it, not just clap. striker could be the next carlito imo, the man is very good on the mic and seems solid enough in the ring.
erik was right about the foley turn getting no reaction, and i would say ECW in general got no reaction that night, but i'm not giving up on the angle yet. imo it was just bad timing, they should've saved something like that for when they are further back east. ECW won't get the same kind of reaction/heat on the west coast as it does in the northeast.

Me too. I love the Spirit Squad gimmick. I just don't like how they are being used in matches. Yeah, those guys are really talented. I liked it when only two of them, with help from the other 3, faced Kane and Big Show for the tag titles. And when they had the 3 on 3 match against the "Odd Squad" that was pretty good. I still FF when they do a cheer though.

I still suggest that if they ever carried a boombox to the ring...asll stood and started thier crazy cheers to a beat , it would really get the gimmick over. Because if the writers watched SNL , it was the music and how Ferrell and Oteri used it to make the sketches work.

I dont know. The Spirit Squad made wearing sweaters funny.
I know most hate them but I too like the Spirit Squad. They're funny and I need some comedy to get my mind off of whatever crap Vince pulls on Raw.
I agree with SUPERECWFAN1 that a boombox wouldn't be a bad idea. Also they should do like the Ginyu Force did on DBZ by doing some sort of crazy pose whenever they introduce themselves or when they are done cheering.

the spirit squad are not supposed to be LOL funny, they're supposed to be annoyingly bad cheerleaders that you DON'T like, that's the whole point. do you guys think they're that off que on their cheers by accident?? this isn't sketch comedy, after all they are trying to draw boo's from the crowd. about doing a pose each guy does have a distinct dance move.

Let's be honest , the spirit squad is a lame gimmick but they have managed to make it work thus far so kudos to them , since all 5 of them have not really work together as a team - 1 is a former tough enough contestant and from Deep South wrestling , the rest are from OVW and 1 of them is the former caddy for Chavo "Kerwin White" character. Kenny is engaged to Mickey James who is 7 years older than he is .
I wonder how long the gimmick will last though , it will definitely get stale after a while and then some of them will break out to become singles wrestler as they used to be in OVW. I think Kenny can breakout to become a decent wrestler in the future considering he's only 20.

how is it a lame gimmick?? it gets heat so i don't see how it's lame. if you mean a bunch of male cheerleaders acting like idiots is lame, well no shit that's the point. it's not intended to be "bad ass" or "elite" heel gimmick. you're not supposed to think "man those are some tough evil bastards, i wonder who can stop them??" you're supposed to think "damn those guys get on my nerves, i bet they'd get their asses kicked 1 on 1 and i hope it happens soon."

Male cheerleaders ARE a lame gimmick , it's not like they can continue with that cheerleader gimmick forever , after a while , it's going to get stale and then either the group will disperse or they will end up on HEAT or getting squashed by Kane or Big Show on RAW.

I like Kenny (Ken Doane) of the SS.
He reminds me of Owen Hart.
I only caught the last forty minutes or so, but I thought the crowd was really cheering Cena on.

nice reason for WHY it's a lame gimmick. most gimmicks don't last forever nor should they. i truely doubt the long term plan is for them to stay together as the spirit squad forever. there will be 1 or 2 breakout stars from the group and then there will be a break-up fued. the gimmick is working and if that's lame then the WWE needs more lame gimmicks.

Let's be honest , i did say that they managed to make it work , the spirit squad could easily have gone the way of the heart throbs or La resistance (and they still could) and ended up being squashed by the likes of Big Show or Kane or Viscera. One can easily imagine some monster face would pile them up on top of one another and just sit on them for a pin.
