View Full Version : The Poseidon Adventure is simply Poseidon
Irwin Allen's 1972 disaster epic, The Poseidon Adventure is one big in-joke of disaster epics; the fact it became a successful movie could be the actors understood Allen's direction. Furthermore, each character is three-dimensional. However, for some unfathonable reason, The Poseidon Adventure has been remade to be released in 2006 as simply Poseidon (I don't think this will be much of an adventure for neither the actors nor the audience. There's a reason why "adventure" was cut from the title).
Will anyone go to see Poseidon? It won't have any Shelley Winters' moments such as when she swims against the tide to help save the remaining survivors. I believe the new movie is going to be a rather bland retelling without any interesting moments.

Titanic practically killed my interest in movies like this so I'll pass. Besides thare's no way in hell this movie is gonna be as good as the original.

One cool thing is that it's really short. 99 minutes. Should be briskly-paced.

Andre Braugher can act circles around any in the original or the remake.
It's too bad Richard Dreyfus did not reassume his Matt Hooper JAWS role for Poseidon; ah, some much for any funny shark references.

I saw the original Poseidon Adventure in the theater when I was a kid. The FX and stuntwork should be better than the original, but I think this new version will compared unfavorably with Titanic. I suppose the producers were hoping to capture even part of the audience that Titanic pulled in, but that just isn't realistic without the huge chickflick audience that movie pulled in with the Leo/Kate romance. I really wish that Hollywood could show a little more creativity these days, but they seem to be running on fumes right now.

True, in a few more months Hollywood's fumes is going to fart up the pointless The Omen remake. Someone needs to give the executives Gas-X or Tums.

I'm going to go see it. Just 'cause I really liked the first 2 when I saw them in the theatures.
I have no interest in the remake of The Omen though.

There was a recent telemovie remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE with Adam Baldwin and Steve Guttenberg that had an unnecssary terrorist subplot and now we've got the big budget version. How did that come about?
The only reason I'll probably see this one is because of the special effects, Andre Braugher and Kurt Russell. I'm too much in love with the original which is probably the champ of diaster movies. Wonder if they'll have the guts to use "The Morning After" in this new one!

I read a spoiler that suggested they do. It'll be amusing if it's true.

For some odd reason, everytime I see this thread title, I keep thinking "box office poison."

Can it possibly compare to the TV Movie with Adam Balwin and Steve Guttenburg?
I think not.

The feature had to drop the "Adventure," because of the TV movie with Peter Weller, although I'm sure it had nothin to do with Peter Weller! :)
I saw Poseidon, with very little in the way of good expectations, 2 or 3 weeks ago, and loved it! Wolfgang Petersen gave us a fun rollercoaster ride!

When will they learn; special effects DON'T make a movie great. The acting is horrid, and people may only see this just for the same reason people saw the "House of Wax" remake; see someone they hate die a horrible death. In this case: Fergie.
But, not as bad (or likable) as Paris dying. At least she goes with some dignity.

When was the television remake released? I missed it.
I still can't believe Richard Dreyfuss is part of the cast, yet they are not using his JAWS Matt Hooper character for in-jokes...
